China recycling used condoms as hair bands: report

The Straits Times BEIJING - USED condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported on Tuesday. In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said. 'These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people,' it said. Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said. 'People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns,' the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying. A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 fen (4 Singapore cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said. A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal. China's manufacturing industry has been repeatedly tarnished this year by a string of scandals involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both domestic and foreign markets. In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems. -- AFP Just imagine you buy a packet of chicken rice... packed with these recycled bands...

Why am i not surprise?
When going to China, I make sure i stock up more than enough condom from budget terminal's 7-11 in singapore before boarding flight to China.

If you check Chinadaily website at www.chinadaily.com.cn, no such article was posted or published. Another creative piece of fictitious writing ?
and what is 25 fen ??? I have been to china and never heard this value ??? 4 SG cents should be equal to 2 jiao (or 0.2 yuan).

No big deal cos we also use recycled paper for our toilet paper and cups, and recycled platics PET bottles to drink water. This is the typical western media (especially american) to condemn any china malpractice. They ask us to recycle, when we do, they highlight and condemn.

ahah actually i am suprised they got soo many condoms to re-cycle...i fear a lot of the local PRC do not take good care of themselves..many women i've slept with over the 4-5years i've been here do not keep condoms at hand even though they sleep around....their attitude is use don't use oso nevermind...if they think safe period can CIP if not just pull out and cum somewhere else, never occur to them that they might catch or transmit some STD?
kinda scary huh
