SINGAPORE - The Commissioner of Charities (COC) has started an inquiry into the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, even as the Commercial Affairs Department is investigating the temple for suspected criminal offences.

The Office of the COC said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 22) that following feedback the COC received on the temple's management, the commissioner carried out a review on the temple.

The review found some areas of concern relating to governance and administration that the statement said warranted an inquiry before the COC decides on the next course of action.


The Office of the COC said that it has been notified by the CAD of the department's investigations into the temple.

The office added that the temple can continue with its operations and daily services.

With help from the Hindu Endowments Board (HEB), the commissioner will put in place measures for the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, "to ensure that it is properly managed and its religious activities will not be affected during the inquiry", the Office of the COC said.


In a separate statement, a spokesman for HEB said it will assist the COC to ensure that temple operations run smoothly.

"Devotees' interests are paramount in our minds as the COC continues with the investigations," he added.
