The assailant punches Mr. Rajoy Source: Diario de Pontevedra. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was assaulted during an election walkabout in Pontevedra (Galicia), a spokesman for Popular Party headquarters in Madrid confirmed to The Spain Report. Mr. Rajoy has not suffered serious injuries, the spokesman said. A man in the crowd, under the pretence of taking a selfie with the Prime Minister, hit Mr. Rajoy in the face, breaking his spectacles. El País described the punch as a "strong blow to the face". El País and El Mundo reported the attacker was a 17-year old minor. El País, citing police sources, reported he had said "I am very happy to have done it" before being arrested. A spokeswoman for the National Police confirmed to The Spain Report the attacker was 17 years old. A video of the attack posted on YouTube by the Diario de Pontevedra shows the young man, with very short hair and a black jacket standing just to the left of the Prime Minister, at a distance of under a metre, as Mr. Rajoy speaks to a small crowd. Without warning, the youth suddenly throws an aggressive punch with his left fist straight into the left side of Mariano Rajoy's face, knocking his glasses clean off and throwing the Prime Minister off balance in shock. The Prime Minister continued his walkabout without his glasses. El Mundo reported he had asked out loud: "How could this have happened?". Mr. Rajoy's security detail jumped on the man, who also attempted to assault one of the agents, and arrested him. The attack took place at 5:50 p.m. Spanish time, Europa Press reported, in a square in the centre of the Galician town. Public Works Minister Ana Pastor, who was accompanying Mr. Rajoy at the time of the attack, tweeted at 7:17 p.m. that: "I have no words to express my outrage at the attack @marianorajoy has been a victim of this evening on the streets of Pontevedra". PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez offered him the Socialist Party's support. "We condemn the attack Mariano Rajoy has suffered this evening", he said, to applause. Pablo Iglesias and Albert Rivera both sent the Prime Minister text messages of support after the attack. UPyD leader Andrés Herzog tweeted his "total condemnation" of the assault: "nothing can justify violence". Amos Yee pse do it for SG50! Click here to view the whole thread at www.sammyboy.com. |
