Trojan malware infected 900,000 Android devices, forces unwanted app downloads
Google Android may be the most popular mobile platform today, but it is definitely not the most secure as security researchers discovered new vulnerabilities every other day. Cheetah Mobile Security Research Lab stumbled upon a trojan malware, Ghost Push on 18th September which has since evolved into multiple variants.
According to Cheetah Mobile Security Research Lab, Ghost Push is a project headed by an illegal mobile marketing industry involving vast operations and several vendors.
As of 8th October, more than 900,000 Android devices running versions 2.3 to 5.1 in over 116 countries are infected with the trojan malware and the virus developers are said to be making at least US$4.05 million dollars every day!
What made Ghost Push so dangerous is the fact that
it can bypass security measures implemented by Google for the Play Store and other third-party app stores. It hides itself in some popular apps such as Talking Tom 3 and once downloaded on the device, it gains full root and control which allows the virus developers to push app downloads without the consent of the user.
While these infected apps have since been removed from the Google Play Store, Cheetah Mobile Security Research Lab warns that Ghost Push is very hard to be removed from infected devices. The firm has since developed a special security tool to remove the trojan malware and its variants and is available for you to download on the Google Play Store.
