Indian national gets 16 year's jail and caning for bashing man to death with concrete slabs

SINGAPORE - An Indian national who viciously attacked another Indian national to rob him, then left his body under the Kampong Java flyover, was jailed 16 years and ordered to be caned 12 strokes on Monday after he pleaded guilty to culpable homicide.
Periyasamy Devarajan was 20 years old in 2012 when he bashed 31-year-old Raju Arivazhagen in the face and head with a rock, a branch and three concrete slabs each weighing 10.5kg to 13.8kg.
He was initially accused of murder but the charge was later reduced to culpable homicide. No reason was given in court why the charge was reduced.
The High Court heard on Monday that the two men, both construction workers, were strangers but chanced across each other when Mr Raju was looking for his lost wallet.
