PAP GOVT TO BAN ALL GAMBLING WEBSITES EXCEPT SINGAPORE POOLS

The Media Development Authority explained today that the types of remote gambling targeted by the Remote Gambling Act does not cover any games which don’t allow players to receive real money.
The remote gambling act was passed and announced last October and it is going to take effect from February 2 this year.
Industry players had raised concerns about how the act would impact their operations.
MDA clarified that the act aims to prohibit remote, casino-style games which allow players to redeem real money or real merchandise with in-game money.
The act will not cover games which may have gambling aspects but can’t be exchanged for real money. For example, games which reward players with game credits may be construed as gambling but where such credits can only be used to redeem “enhancement features” such as weapons, power-ups and skills in game, they will not be affected by the new laws.
Even some games which reward players with real merchandise or cash prizes may escape restriction if the prizes are not awarded withing a casino-styled game.

Games such as Farmville and Candy Crush Saga won’t be affected but online betting and gambling portals like Bet365 and PokerStars, FullTilt Poker and many more international portals will be prohibited. Access to the websites will be blocked.
Websites like Bet365 operate by allowing gamblers to bet on sports games, horse races, and more, similar to Singapore pools. This and more are internationally recognised and popular portals as they offer higher odds than traditional betting portals.
While the government has explained that they wanted to prohibit such remote gambling due to its convenience and therefore greater temptation for gamblers, another effect of the prohibitions is that Singapore Pools and our local casinos will enjoy a monopoly over such gambling.
These local outlets are heavily taxed by the government and as some gamblers may move from online gambling to these outlets after the MDA ban, the government may end up earning more.
If the government was serious about prohibiting gambling or stopping problem gambling, they could get rid of the two casinos in Singapore and put more restrictions on Singapore Pools instead of taking half-steps to stop only international firms from earning.
