The National Parks Board (NParks) has announced that they will be sending their officers and park rangers to self-defence courses to better equip them to deal with aggressive members of the public.
The move comes after several of their officers had been assaulted this year while trying to carry out their duties.
So far this year, there have already been eight cases of assault on NParks officers with one woman having to be hospitalized after being beaten up by a group of 6 people who were caught littering.
The number of cases of assault on NParks officers is higher than last year when there were only 2 in the entire year. In 2012, there were only 7 in total.
While NParks commissioner Dr Leong Chee Chiew said that there isn’t a strong rising trend, they wanted to equip their officers with appropriate skills as a “pre-emptive” measure.

In order to train the officers in self-defence, NParks has called for tenders through GeBIZ for companies who can run structured self-defence courses for the rangers.
Other measures being implemented include deploying officers in pairs and making them wear cameras to document what goes on during their shifts and to help catch perpetrators should the officers become victims of assault.
