Thumbs up angmoh are using and speaking less prepositions ... Singlish style

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

nowadays even angmoh are getting pissed off with their own English. All the craps of for, in, of, on, to, and with don't jell with their descendants and yet PAP are complaining Singaporeans are not speaking proper English?

As we all know, prepositions are words which show relations between nouns, pronouns, and verbs. Prepositions are mostly short words like for, in, of, on, to, and with but sometimes, they are longer words, as in the case of beneath or between.

Prepositions are often integral to a sentence, but writers can overload the sentences too much by using too many prepositions. We will give you four tips in order to help you in reducing the number of prepositions you use:

1- Use Active Voice, This Prevents Over Usage of Prepositions.

Mostly, preferring active voice over passive voice eliminates the usage of a preposition. For example; ”The Statue of Passion was carved by the genius artist.”, and “The genius artist carved the Statue of Passion.” As you see, the preposition is taken out in the second sentence. But, you need to be very careful when chosing the active voice over passive, and don’t kill or change the meaning and feeling of the statement.

2- Prefer Adverbs, Instead of Prepositional Phareses.

Always, adverbs are more stronger than the prepositional phrases. And as a writer, you must always keep this in mind. For example; “The lady responded to the letter with regret.”, or “The lady responded regretfully to the letter.”

3- Leave Aside Nominalizations

It is better to give an example for this one; “Their attempt to provide a justification of the expense was unsuccessful.”, or “Their attempt to justify the expense was unsuccessful.”

4- Get rid of prepositional Phrases

The structure of a prepositional phrase is [preposition+article+noun] and it provides the context. However, we can not say they’re always necessary. For example; “The worst outcome for this plan would be an awful withdrawal.”, note whether the meaning is clear without the phrase, and if so, just delete that: “The worst outcome would be an awful withdrawal.”
