Crap about Islam

http://www.haaretz.com/news/middle-e...emium-1.654871

Though Muslims' attitudes to sex are as diverse as those in any other global religious community, the image of contemporary Islam is certainly not sexy. This may explain why a recent news story about plans to open a "halal" sex shop in Islam's holiest city, Mecca – in Saudi Arabia, one of the Arab world's most conservative countries – went viral among Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

While many assumed that the story actually meant that this was a concrete plan, or even that this shop had actually opened its doors, it remains only a wish – some critics called it wishful thinking – expressed by Abdelaziz Aouragh, the Moroccan-Dutch entrepreneur behind El Asira , an erotic e-shop described as halal – meaning sanctioned by Islamic law, similar to the concept of kosher.

And El Asira is not the only such erotic enterprise with this Islamic label; quite a number have popped up in recent years. Over a year ago, Palestinian entrepreneur Ashraf Alkiswani launched Karaz, an e-store and online forum. “It’s not about just sex. It’s about love and the joy of expressing that love,” Alkiswani was quoted as saying at the time. “It’s about trying to build bridges across gaps that separate the husband from the wife by improving sexual harmony.”

Aouragh also described his motivations in similar terms, noting that “if couples don’t take the time to show the love for their partner nor themselves, they won’t be able to reach a deeper sensual, sexual or spiritual connection.”

Unlike Western erotic shops, neither El Asira nor Karaz sell sex toys online, but market various oils and creams which supposedly enhance foreplay and intensify pleasure during intercourse.

The notion that a sex shop could actually be halal had many Muslims and non-Muslims bewildered. At a certain level, describing erotica as being sanctioned by sharia is simply a branding exercise designed to tap the potentially a lucrative and under-exploited market in Muslim countries. “Considering we’re targeting a market of around 1.8 billion people, the potential is huge,” enthused Aouragh in a recent interview about El Asira’s new partnership with German erotica giant Beate Uhse.

But the halal label is not just about marketing, in this case: It is also about breaking the social taboo surrounding sexual pleasure prevalent in many conservative Muslim communities by demonstrating that sexuality is to be encouraged, not frowned upon, by Islam.

“I think Islam is more open [than Muslims are] to sex and issues surrounding sexuality,” Mohammed Abbasi, the co-director of the Association of British Muslims, the UK’s oldest Islamic organization, told Haaretz. “Islam is more about what people do in private is their business… whereas Muslims want to get involved in a person’s private life.”

To ensure that their websites and products are indeed halal, both Aouragh and Alkiswani sought and received the approval of numerous Islamic clerics and scholars. To the uninitiated, and given the puritanism which pervades some current trends within Islam, this may sound counterintuitive.

“Religion or lack of it have nothing to do with sexuality,” Marwa Rakha , a prominent Egyptian expert on relationships and dating, told Haaretz, noting that the main difference between many self-proclaimed “secular” and “religious” people is their attitude to premarital sex.

Historically, Islam has possessed a relatively open attitude to sex. In medieval times, many religious scholars doubled as sex gurus. They penned countless manuals and guides, including one poetically titled "The Perfumed Garden." Perhaps surprisingly, many highlighted the “importance of female fulfillment,” according to Kecia Ali , a professor of religion at Boston University, in her book "Sexual Ethics and Islam."

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, the 11th-century philosopher and mystic who is among the most highly revered figures in Islam, wrote widely about the importance of the female orgasm. “The husband should not be preoccupied with his own satisfaction,” the sage advised. “Simultaneity in the moment of orgasm is more delightful to her.”

Likewise, the Prophet Mohammed himself was reportedly a huge advocate of foreplay, urging his male followers to send “messengers” to their wives in the form of “kisses and caresses.”

This traditional Islamic focus on the carnal partly explains, in the words of Kecia Ali, why “medieval Christian polemics against Islam viewed its sensualism as barbaric in comparison with the purity of Christianity.”

Islam vs. Christendom

This view of Muslim society continued into the European colonial era. Many Orientalists from the straitlaced, uptight and prudish 19th century were of the view that “everything about the Orient… exuded dangerous sex, threatened hygiene and domestic seemliness with an ‘excessive freedom of intercourse,’” in the words of the late Prof. Edward Said, the Palestinian-American scholar who authored the groundbreaking "Orientalism."

Paradoxically, this is how some Muslims, especially in the more conservative sections of society, see today’s West, while Westerners, especially those who are unaware of the existence of liberal Muslims, often see Islamic societies as sexually repressed. While such perceptions are partly due to actual changes, such as the rise of political Islam and setbacks endured by secularism, they are also related to the centuries-old tendency of Islam and Christendom (i.e., the West) to see each other as diametrically opposed, despite their enormous similarities.

Around the world, many Muslims are pushing back against the conservative and sexually repressive interpretation of their faith. “I think more Muslims are becoming more mature and open in their attitudes to sexuality, but at the same time there is a backlash from the more conservative sections of Muslims,” says Abbasi.

For instance, in Egypt, while many young people became more open and assertive about issues relating to sex, extremist Salafist groups have set up vigilante “morality” patrols in some parts of the country, which locals have often defied robustly.

Islamic history, scripture and legal texts have become a major battleground between liberals and conservatives for the body, heart and soul of Islam. However, while helpful at certain levels, attempts to find an “authentic” version of Islam which is progressive enough to fit with modern norms is, as with other religious traditions, also problematic.

“The discourse of Islamic authenticity has had a stifling effect on intra-Muslim debates about sex and sexuality,” writes Kecia Ali, especially when it comes to sex outside of marriage, gender equality and homosexuality.

One side effect of the reluctance to bring sex out of the closet is that many Muslims are left to their own devices, and must engage in a process of discreet self-education. In addition to disinclination within the realm of the family, there is also the generally poor quality of sex education in numerous Arab and Muslim countries.

“Education and awareness are weak in general in Egypt and many other Arab/Muslim societies,” explains the Egyptian expert Rakha. “Those in charge of the education process do not want generations of knowledgeable and curious children, teens, and adults… How can you control a population that understands its rights and freedoms?”

Rakha believes that, like charity, sexual awareness and maturity must begin at home. “The revolution has to come from the core of every family – otherwise it is not happening,” she maintains.

However, despite the existence of a rising number of open-minded families, many Muslim parents are unlikely to want to cede control of their offsprings’ love lives, either because it would go against the demands of tradition or because governing access to knowledge of sex is a powerful weapon.

“Most families want their children virgins until they get married,” observes Rakha. “To fulfill this beautiful dream, they will minimize sexual education and awareness, lest the sex dragons awaken and ruin the plan.”

Some young Egyptians are rejecting these restrictions, but many do so behind their families’ backs. “They revolt in secrecy, adding a new number each second to the hypocritical population,” she notes.

But not everyone is acting in secret: Some young people, intellectuals and activists openly calling for a sexual revolution. In Egypt, for instance, a vanguard of women intent on seizing their rights is playing a prominent role in this awakening, whether by combating sexual harassment , insisting on dressing as they please in public, rejecting the hijab , fighting the stigma of being single , or even choosing to live on their own.

Sex, lies and Sharia Law: The secret life of the Sultan of Brunei

Hypocrisy of the supposedly "devout" Brunei Sultan.

http://www.news.com.au/entertainment...-1227321779779

HE’S worth an estimated $25 billion (AUS), lives in a 1700-bed palace, indulges himself in western luxuries and has a reputation for enjoying beautiful women.

In a story on 60 Minutes, viewers saw how the Sultan of Brunei lives a very extravagant but somewhat moderate Muslim life.
But last year the Sultan introduced Sharia Law - where thieves would have their hands cut off and adulterers and homosexuals would be stoned to death. It applies to everyone living in Brunei except the Sultan and his Royal family.

While parts of the ancient Islamic law have been introduced in stages, Brunei is now on the verge of adopting public stoning.

60 Minutes’ Alison Langdontravelled through the small Asian nation undercover to see how the strict regime was affecting citizens and spoke to a woman who was once part of the Sultan’s harem revealing the hypocrisy of the current state of affairs.

“We’ve been trying for six months to get access and permission to visit Brunei to speak to the Sultan and that was denied, so in the end we decided to go in as tourists,” Langdon told news.com.au ahead of the program.

What they found, she explained, was a beautiful but repressed country where its citizens never criticise the royal family – mainly because it's a crime – and seem to be unaware of the Sultan and his playboy brother, Prince Jefri’s debauchery.

Both brothers have a reputation for indulging in beautiful women.
Vanity Fair dubbed them the “constant companions in hedonism” in 2011 for their lavish lifestyles and penchant for collecting women like children collect toys.

And Prince Jefri is on the outer, accused of siphoning $19.2 billion (AUS) from the country’s coffers.

According to Jillian Lauren, the American woman who spoke to 60 Minutes about her year in Prince Jefri and the Sultan’s harem, the pair indulged a lot – and they didn’t care how old the girls were.

“She (Lauren) was in the harem when she was 18 and when she was there there were between 30 to 40 other girls, some as young as 15,” Ms Langdon said. “She spent a year there. She received hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts, jewerlly and clothing. She was very well looked after but that’s because she caught the eye of the Sultan’s younger brother Prince Jefri.

“She was his play thing. They had sex hundreds of times and then Prince Jefri gave her as a gift to the Sultan and she goes into great detail (about) the sexual activity she got up to with the sultan.”

Ms Langdon said the crew spent five days in Brunei secretly recording, trying to find out if people felt anger towards the new changes. But instead they found citizens seemingly apathetic to Sharia Law.

Brunei has a population just over 415,000 and was ranked the fifth richest nation in the world by Forbes thanks to its large oil and gas reserves.

Its citizens enjoy free health and education, most are employed in the public sector and none of them criticise the royal family – because it’s not allowed.

When 60 Minutes went in, they found it hard to find anyone who was willing to say a bad word about anything from the introduction of Sharia Law or the royal family.

It seems only the Hollywood elite were repulsed by the introduction of the ancient Islamic law.

Last year stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, Jay Leno, Sharon Osborne, Elton John and entrepreneur Richard Branson boycotted the infamous Beverley Hills Hotel which is owned by the Sultan as part of his Dorchester Hotel luxury chain.

All vowed to take their business elsewhere. And the stance worked according to a Vanity Fair article last year.

“It’s a really bizarre place Brunei,” Ms Langdon said. “No one has any ideas about what the sultan and his brother have got up to. They have no idea about the women, the sex acts and the drinking of alcohol. They don’t get exposed to that.”

The Playboy Sultan aired on 60 Minutes.

How sharia law inadvertently helps paedophilia and rape

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/o...hilia-and-rape

In a The Malaysian Insider article on February 7, Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin, the erstwhile spokeswoman of the G25, stated that the implementation of hudud laws in Kelantan will be open to abuse by paedophiles and rapists. -

It is a bitter pill to swallow for conservative traditional Muslims, I know. However, if we delude ourselves into thinking this will not be the case, we will run the risk of causing great harm in Kelantan, especially to Muslim women and children, for whom this law applies.

In order to understand how the noble religion of Islam can be instrumentalised to legitimise such heinous acts, we must understand that Islam was reintroduced by Prophet Muhammad in a particular socio-cultural milieu, that of 7th century Arabia.

This being the case, the cultural norms of the time influenced what we now come to know as Islamic teachings. Conservative traditional Muslims consider this notion unacceptable, almost blasphemous.
For them, the cultural subjectivities which exist within the Islamic tradition of knowledge (turath in Arabic) do not exist.

What was formulated in that era was a human attempt at understanding the Quranic message, if even that.

This is why there are massive contradictions in the turath. Therefore, any attempt would necessarily be mired within its own cultural biases.

Unfortunately, this fact is not recognised by PAS. They fail to understand that hudud laws are ultimately just interpretations of God’s will, if not utter misinterpretations thereof.

Even when PAS governed both Kelantan and Terengganu, they could not come up with uniform set of hudud laws. Such is the latitude of interpretation but the rakyat is not told of this.

This is probably to create a façade of divine authority. Latitudes of interpretations are not bad outcomes at all. They simply show a human element to the process. A human element PAS cannot afford to expose.

In the case of paedophilia, it will forever be a problem because traditional Muslims subscribe to the notion that the Prophet married a six-year-old child, Aisha.

Because this information is considered authentic and the Prophet is the paradigm of human perfection, traditional Muslims will never escape this issue and modern ulama have often allowed marrying minors much to the chagrin of Muslims everywhere.

On the other hand, the Quran is very clear that marriage is for believers (Chapter 2, Verse 221) and those are defined by their maturity to function in society (9/71).

This clearly excludes children and there are other versions of Aisha’s age in Islamic narratives which testify to this fact. However, if the ulama were to rescind this norm or worse, to challenge the authenticity of this hadith, the integrity of their entire system of jurisprudence will collapse.

As for rape, most versions of sharia law actually punishes the victims for reporting the crime because in doing so, they have confessed to adultery!

This is due to a misunderstanding of the Quranic norm to punish adulterers (24/2).

However, a rape victim is not an adulterer because she was an unwilling participant in the fact.

The Quran does not penalise acts under compulsion (16/106) hence the adultery law cannot apply in this case.

I believe what led to this misinterpretation are patriarchal notions of honour which see women as objects rather than people.

A rape victim has been ‘soiled’ and must be redeemed through punishment.

This must have been the case with the Qatif case in Saudi Arabia where the victim herself was punished, ostensibly for being alone in a car with a marriageable male.

Marital rape can also be a problem. There are traditions in which “angels” reprimand wives for refusing sexual relations with their husband.

This leads to the notion that sex is a god-given right of the husband and hence he can seek its fulfilment at will. Little wonder that this sort of mentality can lead to cases of marital rape.

All in all, hudud laws are very much one sided in favour of men. Men have unassailable rights over women. Not only that, men’s temptations and the lack of ability to control them are blamed on women.

We have already seen in Kelantan elements of this misogyny and obsession with sexual regulation. Even queuing in shops has become an issue!

Men and women are feared to break into some sort of frenzy if they were to queue together. Queuing together happens all over the world without any such incident yet this is seen to be an issue.

Apart from that, women are told to wear the headcover and not to overdo make-up. There is little responsibility given to men. This imbalance is exactly the same as 7th century Arabia.

This worldview is entirely at odds with the Quran, as shown above. The Quran does not legislate any sort of cultural dress and places responsibility at the hands of the criminal, not the victim.

In summary, there are numerous issues with the hudud bill and its deficiencies with regards to rape and paedophilia will lead to great social problems.

PAS needs to realise that hudud laws developed in a particular cultural milieu and Muslims should constantly re-evaluate them in light of the Islamic spirit. – February 18, 2015.

Islamic scholar: Wife cannot deny husband sex 'even when riding on a camel'

Malaysia does not currently consider marital rape illegal; However, a husband who threatens violence or harms his wife is liable to face five years in prison.

A Malaysian Islamic Scholar has raised brows recently while denying that the concept of marital rape exists in Islam, though saying that a woman would even have to do the deed on a camel if her husband requested.

“Even the Prophet says, even when they’re riding on the back of the camel, when the husband asks her, she must give," Islam religious scholar Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria told Malay Mail Online on Monday, adding that a wife has "no right" to turn down her husband's sexual advances.

“So there’s no such thing as rape in marriage. This is made by European people, why should we follow?”

Malaysia does not currently consider marital rape illegal. However, a husband who threatens violence or harms his wife is liable to face five years in prison.

Harussani said that a woman may refuse sex with her husband when she is menstruating, sick or has just given birth.

Further on in the report, independent Muslim preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin said that the concept of marital rape dopes not exist in Islam.

“That term (marital rape) is not accurate in the practice of Islam because rape in Islam is defined as forced sexual intercourse outside of marriage," he said. He placed responsibility on men to convince their wives to change their minds voluntarily by setting a romantic atmosphere and by being affectionate.

Wan Ji said that a wife may turn down sex while sick, menstruating, fasting during the month of Ramaddan, tired after work or just in a bad mood. He added that old age can also be a reason.

Both religious figures emphasized that the use of violence to force relations with one's wife is criminal, with Harussani saying that it is illegal according to civil and Sharia law.

Outrage over possible appeal for Malaysian scholar convicted of child porn

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...e/1826726.html

Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin was sentenced to five years in jail in the UK, after being found with more than 30,000 images and videos of child pornography.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have slammed those defending a scholarship student convicted of possessing, making and distributing pornographic images of children in London.

On Apr 30, Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin was sentenced to five years in jail after being found with more than 30,000 images and videos of child pornography. The 23-year-old "math genius" was a student at the prestigious Imperial College London, on a now suspended study loan from Malaysian government agency Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).

MARA has since told local news outlet The Star that it will give Nur Fitri a "second chance" to continue his studies at any MARA institution in Malaysia upon his release. However, it has stated that he has to pay back his study loan.

On Monday (May 4), the Minister of Rural and Regional Development Mohd Shafie Apdal reportedly told local media that it may consider appealing for a lighter sentence for Nur Fitri as well.

The reports have been met with outrage by Malaysians on social media.

ISIS' sex slave market: How Islamic State is wiping out Iraq's Yazidi minority

http://www.haaretz.com/news/middle-e...emium-1.654925

Yazidi women raped by Islamic State in recent months do not always live to tell the tale. Some who do are sold as bargaining chips; others commit suicide.

The Islamic State is continuing to wipe out the Yazidi religious minority in northern Iraq – by means of rape: Those women who survive are rejected by their families. Some commit suicide.

The tragedy that has befallen the Yazidis, whose villages were captured last August by the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, is far from over. Last week, it was reported that the extremist Islamic organization had recently murdered 300 Yazidis and that thousands of women are still being held captive and are serving as bargaining chips.

Recently, ISIS released several of these women, who then found shelter in refugee camps in the Kurdish-held enclave in Iraq. They described some of the tribulations they had undergone to a reporter for the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

“We woke up in the village of Hardan in the Sinjar mountains with ISIS forces attacking us. We tried to flee, but they captured us,” said one of the women, who identified herself as Dalia. That was on August 3, 2014.

“They brought us together in the village square and told us if we didn’t convert to Islam, we would die. We agreed, to save our lives, but it didn’t help. They took the men and since then we haven’t heard a thing about them," she explained.

"They separated the younger women from the older ones. They sent the young women and the children to the city of Tal Afar and took children who were over 5 years old, including my brother, from us. They imprisoned the others in the school. It was like a slave market. The ISIS commanders, including Turks, Germans and Chechens, came every day and bought one of us females, including girls who were 12 or 13. One ISIS member of Turkmen origin brought me to his house in Tel Afar, where his wife and three children lived too.

“I remained there for about five months," Dalia continued. "One day an ISIS member by the name of Abu Mustafa took me so he could give me as a gift to a Chechen member of the organization named Ayman. Before raping me, Ayman pulled my hair and forced me to dunk my head in a full pail of oil, telling me: ‘You are so dirty that this is how we will purify you.’ Then he imprisoned me in his house and raped me for three days. Then he exchanged me for another Yazidi girl who had been a concubine of a man named Abu Salah. He raped me and then returned me to Ayman.

“Ten days later, Abu Mustafa came back and bought me, saying I had been given as a gift so I could not be exchanged. I remained with Abu Mustafa for a month and then he sold me to a resident of the city of Mosul named Aizam, who used to rape me every night. After a month, he sold me to another man in Mosul, until he got sick of me and sold me to a local doctor.

"The doctor," Dalia summed up, "sold me to someone from Kirkuk who told me that he hadn’t bought me to rape me but rather to set me free. And in fact, he took me to Karbala, and then Baghdad and finally to Zakho [in the Kurdish enclave], where he turned me over to the Kurdish police.”

Drop in the ocean

The autonomous Iraqi Kurdish government has taken it upon itself to seek out and gain possession of Yazidi women, providing them shelter or returning them to their families – if the relatives are still alive. Hadi Dubani, who holds the Yazidi portfolio in the Kurdish autonomous enclave, noted in a press interview that he pays ISIS members between $1,000 and $10,000 for each woman.

“This is a profitable business” for ISIS, he noted wryly. “ISIS buys women for $50 and sells them for $2,000 or $2,500.” But the pace at which the women are being freed is slow. Sometimes ISIS decides to release them on its own. For example, it’s not clear why the organization recently decided to free a group of Yazidi women. One explanation is that it was seeking to inflict shame on the greater community after violating the women’s dignity.

In fact, many of the victims, particularly young ones, seek shelter with relatives because the raped women are considered dishonored, particularly if they become pregnant as a result. For their part, Kurdish doctors are trying to assist these young woman and perform secret abortions, which are illegal in the Kurdish enclave. They even perform surgery to restore their hymens so the women maintain the prospect of getting married and having a family. In one case, the doctors assisted a 9-year-old girl who had gotten pregnant after she was raped by a group of ISIS members.

Such assistance is just a drop in an ocean of suffering and trauma. The Kurdish Health Ministry doesn’t have the proper facilities to provide vital psychological and psychiatric treatment for the thousands of women and children who live in the refugee camps, frequently without family members who can help them. Sources in aid organizations report that at some 60 young Yazidi women who manage to escape ISIS captivity commit suicide every month out of fear that their families won’t take them back after they have been raped or because they have been ostracized by their communities.

In this manner, ISIS is continuing to destroy the Yazidi community even when it no longer physically controls the areas where they live.

“An entire generation of Yazidis has disappeared off the face of the earth,” says one Kurdish human rights activist. “And those who are left, mostly the women, want to die and be relieved of their suffering.”

International organizations, aid groups and the Kurdish government are in fact helping the thousands of Yazidis living in the refugee camps, but that assistance mostly takes the form of food and medication and medical first aid. Several organizations have recruited social workers and psychologists to treat the hundreds of anguished victims, but this falls far short of addressing their needs, which are only growing.

As a result tremendous damage is still being inflicted that is not public knowledge, the effects of which will be around many years after the physical wounds have healed.

Islamic State: Taking women as sex slaves ‘firmly established’ Islamic law

Islamic State terrorists explained in a new publication their justification for taking women and using them as sex slaves, saying simply that it’s a practice that’s as old as Sharia law — and allowed by Islamic beliefs.

“One should remember that enslaving the families of the kuffar — the infidels — and taking their women as concubines is a firmly established aspect of the Shariah, or Islamic law,” the group said in an online magazine cited by CNN.

Others in the Muslim world have called that practice a perversion of Islam.

Islamic State terrorists wrote about the practice in an article titled “The revival [of] slavery before the Hour,” in reference to Judgment Day, CNN reported. The article was published in the English-language online magazine, “Dabiq,” and specifically referred to the lawful right of jihadists to kidnap females from the Yazidi sect, a Kurdish minority living in Iraq, and use them for concubines or sex slaves.

Human Rights Watch has just reported that Islamic State has committed terrible crimes against the Yazidis in Iraq, citing interviews with 76 displaced people in Dohuk.

“The Islamic State’s litany of horrific crimes against the Yazidis in Iraq only keeps growing,” said Fred Abrahams, special adviser at Human Rights Watch, CNN reported. “We heard shocking stories of forced religious conversions, force marriage, and even sexual assault and slavery — and some of the victims were children.”

Muslim widow to be flogged 100 times for getting pregnant

Muslim widow to be flogged 100 times for getting pregnant

A 23-year-old widow in Akyem Tafo is to be given 100 lashes in public for defying a major Islamic principle regarding widowhood.

The Deputy Chief Imam of Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region, Mallam Madhi Ahmed has endorsed the flogging of a woman for violating her widowhood rites by getting herself pregnant.
The 23-year-old widow will be given one hundred lashes in public for getting pregnant, two months into her widowhood rights.

Ramatu Alhassah is facing the rage of Muslim clerics in her community for getting pregnant while observing Iddah–a widowhood rite that requires that she abstain from sex.

The Deputy Chief Imam at Akyem Tafo, Mallam Madhi Ahmed has defended why Ramatu needs to be punished.

“The law says that if something of this nature happens, both of them if they are not married they have to be caned 100 lashes each but if they are married then they have to be executed.”

He said “in this case I can say the boy who is not married but the girl is still in the room of the husband., so the law has to take effect on her. If it is other country like Saudi Arabia she would be executed and the boy given 100 lashes.”

Ghana as a non-muslim country does not practice the Sharia law.

Islamic Law: Girls Can Be Married Even ‘In The Cradle’

http://www.frontpagemag.com/2014/ray...in-the-cradle/

Originally published by Veritas International Enterprise.

Muslim attempts at “reformation” continue to be limited to words not actions. A few days ago, efforts to set a minimum age for marriage in Saudi Arabia “received a blow after the Grand Mufti said there was nothing wrong with girls below 15 getting married.”

Two years earlier, the justice ministry began pushing for setting a minimum age in the Arabian kingdom. According to Gulf News, “It submitted an integrated study on the negative psychological and social effects of underage marriages to religious scholars and requested a fatwa that sets a minimum age.”

However, the ulema—the “religious scholar,” the learned ones of Islamic law—responded by totally ignoring the request. Saudi Arabia’s highest religious authority, its Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, shrugged the whole matter off by saying “There is currently no intention to discuss the issue.” In other words, case closed.

Although the brief Gulf News report focuses on the age 15, going back to earlier reports when the justice ministry began bringing this issue up, one discovers that the issue at stake is full-blown pedophilia.

Back in 2011, for example, Dr. Salih bin Fawzan, a prominent cleric and member of Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council, issued a fatwa asserting that there is no minimum age for marriage and that girls can be married “even if they are in the cradle.”

Appearing in Saudi papers, the fatwa complained that “Uninformed interference with Sharia rulings by the press and journalists is on the increase”—likely a reference to the justice ministry’s advocacy—“posing dire consequences to society, including their interference with the question of marriage to small girls who have not reached maturity, and their demand that a minimum age be set for girls to marry.”

Fawzan insisted that nowhere does Sharia (or Islamic law) set an age limit for marrying girls: like countless Muslim scholars before him, he relied on Koran 65:4, which discusses marriage to females who have not yet begun menstruating (i.e., are prepubescent) and the fact that Muhammad, Islam’s role model, married Aisha when she was six or seven, “consummating” the marriage—or, in modern/Western parlance, raping her—when she was nine.

The grand point of the Saudi fatwa, however, is not that girls as young as nine can be married, based on Muhammad’s example, but rather that there is no age limit whatsoever. The only question open to consideration is whether the girl is physically capable of handling her “husband.” Fawzan documented this point by quoting Ibn Battal’s authoritative exegesis of Sahih Bukhari:

The ulema [Islam’s scholars and interpreters] have agreed that it is permissible for fathers to marry off their small daughters, even if they are in the cradle. But it is not permissible for their husbands to have sex with them unless they are capable of being placed beneath and bearing the weight of the men. And their capability in this regard varies based on their nature and capacity. Aisha was six when she married the prophet, but he had sex with her when she was nine [that is, when she was deemed capable].

Fawzan concluded his fatwa with a warning: “It behooves those who call for setting a minimum age for marriage to fear Allah and not contradict his Sharia, or try to legislate things Allah did not permit. For laws are Allah’s province; and legislation is his exclusive right, to be shared by none other. And among these are the rules governing marriage.”

Once again, case closed.

Fawzan, of course, is not the first to insist on the legitimacy of pedophilia in Islam. Nor is this just some theoretic, abstract point; the lives of countless young girls are devastated because of this teaching. Recall, for instance, the 8-year-old girl who died on her “wedding” night as her “husband” raped her; or the 12-year-old who died giving birth to a stillborn; or the 10-year-old who made headlines by hiding from her 80-year-old “husband.”

Finally, it should be borne in mind that Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz—the highest Islamic authority in the land of Islam’s birth—not only dismisses calls to place an age restriction for marriage, but is the same Grand Mufti who called for the destruction of all Christian churches on the Arabian Peninsula (as first reported here).

The consistency makes perfect sense. After all, in the eyes of non-Muslims, or “non-believers,” Sharia law is nothing less than a legal system built atop the words and deeds of a seventh century Arab, whose behavior—from pedophilia and sex-slavery to war mongering and plundering to destroying non-Muslim places of worship—was very much that of a seventh century Arab.

Indonesia: Gang-Raped Widow Faces Public Caning Under Sharia Law

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/indonesia-g...ia-law-1447533

An Indonesian widow who was allegedly gang raped by a group of vigilantes as punishment for having an affair with a married man, is facing public caning for violating Islamic law.

The head of Islamic Sharia law office in the eastern town of Langsa, in the conservative Aceh province, said that the 25-year-old woman and her 40-year-old lover should be punished for adultery.

"We want the couple to be caned because they violated the religious bylaw on sexual relations," Ibrahim Latif told the Jakarta Globe.

"They've confessed to having sex on several previous occasions, even though the man is married and has five children."

He said that since the woman was raped after the adultery, the violence was not to be considered a mitigating circumstance, so her punishment would still be carried out according to Sharia Law.

The woman said she was raped by eight men who surprised her as she was having sex with her lover in her house.

The man was tied up and beaten while she was repeatedly raped. The attackers then threw a bucket of sewage over the couple, before handing them over to the local sharia police. The pair face up to nine strokes of the cane each.

As the rape allegations emerged, three gang members, including a 13-year-old were arrested.

Police said they are hunting for the others. The attackers face up to 15 years in prison but are not at risk of caning as they have not been charged under Sharia law.
