By naming bloggers in parliament, repeating continuously about the ‘bad’ things bloggers can do, what the likes of Yaacob and Tessa are doing is creating a situational interest among readers. In Yaacob’s case, he is including provocative information and doing character identification when he deemed it proper to talk about Philemon in parliament. Although Philemon was portrayed in a bad light, it has all the ingredients of inducing a situational interest – naming Ravi and attempting to arouse among readers disgust or negative emotions at Ravi’s actions. Ditto for our other 4 bloggers.
With the constant tirade against bloggers by our ministers and repeated constantly by folks like Tessa, what this only achieves is a sustenance of situational interest, with potential to evolve into a personal interest, which is not what the PAP wants! And the interested reader initially exposed to the articles of condemnation in the mainstream media can perform a simple Google search for “Ravi Philemon”, “Andrew Loh”, “Kirsten Han”, et al that will bring him to their blogs where their writings can be easily accessed.
