Thanks to all the bros for your comments. I'm basically learning it for leisure or romance. If it's possible, I would like to learn both northern and southern accents.

I have to agree the toughest part is likely to be the (6?) tones. Looking at the script, it seems very challenging but if I learn the written words, it would be easier for me to progress faster because I can use a dictionary and texts for self-study.

Learn from youtube which I have been doing...or follow jackbl's posting of youtube lesson ... go takashimaya KINOKUNIYA which has a good selection of how to learn vietnamese...buy a basic book and one eng-viet dictionary to complement youtube lessons...

This method requires some discipline lah vs going to a language school

Learning a certain accent is very hard much less mastering one. So make sure u focus on 1.

Writing is not that tough, with the help of so many online dictionary n apps. Learning to pronounce the words correctly is a totally differnt thing.

Ur TV I think PSLE level...can communicate with vietnamese teenager liao

time to brush up your tonal pronunciation ...which I think is the biggest hurdle for everybody.

She is a graduate frm a Hanoi U. She don't mind any decent jobs (eg waitress, shop assts, etc) cos hard to find employment in VN right now. Her English is very basic so I am trying to help her brush up. Most grads there know how to read/write Eng but shy to speak. So if u know anyone hiring let me know ya? With a degree, I think getting work permit in SG should not be too diff.
