In Comes Quaresma To The Bridge
Portuguese star joins on loan until end of the season Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that we have signed Inter Milan winger Ricardo Quaresma on loan until the end of the season. The Premier League have confirmed the deal. Quaresma joins us as the sixth Portuguese player in the first team squad, following the summer arrivals of José Bosingwa and Deco, who have also worked under manager Luiz Felipe Scolari at international level. The 25-year-old winger can play on either flank, with his qualities of speed and finesse a regular problem for opposing defences. Born in Lisbon on September 26, 1983, Ricardo Andrade Quaresma Bernardo began his career with local club Sporting, making his debut as a 17-year-old. While at Sporting, he worked his way into the first team and became a regular during the championship-winning 2001/02 season alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. He made 59 league appearances in two seasons, scoring eight goals, before Barcelona approached for his services in the summer of 2003, paying six million Euros to secure his signature. His time at the Catalan club yielded only a handful of starts, and an injury towards the end of the season saw the youngster miss out on Euro 2004 in his home country. Following the tournament, he returned to Portugal with Porto, just as Deco was heading to Barcelona. He quickly settled, scoring in the 2004 Uefa Super Cup defeat against Valencia, and was regarded during his four-year stay at Porto as one of the league's most potent weapons. Quaresma's form in the 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns helped seal a succession of league championships, and regular Champions League football. He is no stranger to Stamford Bridge, having played four times as a Porto player against the Blues, twice in 2004/05 and twice again two years later. In March 2007, Quaresma opened the scoring at the Bridge, before goals from Arjen Robben and Michael Ballack sealed our progression into the quarter-finals. After 124 league appearances and 24 goals, Quaresma was bought by Inter Milan last summer, one of José Mourinho's first signings for the club. Now, the 5'8 playmaker has the opportunity to rekindle his relationship with Scolari, who utilised his services in Euro 2008, where he scored the most recent of his three international goals, in a 3-1 win over Petr Cech's Czech Republic side. Quaresma becomes our first and only signing of the winter transfer window, and will stay with us until the end of the season. P.S: List Of UPPEES is not in full due to the capacity limitation of the signature function (not be longer than 300 characters excluding BB Code markup). Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally
No Disciplinary Action Against Bosingwa
Bosingwa apologises for Benayoun tackle Jose Bosingwa has apologised for his actions after the Football Association confirmed no action will be taken over his kick at Liverpool substitute Yossi Benayoun during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday. Referee Mike Riley, who had earlier sent off Frank Lampard in controversial circumstances, admitted that, while he had not seen Bosingwa's challenge, it had been spotted by assistant Mo Matadar. The officials did not punish Bosingwa and, under FIFA law, the FA are prohibited from taking disciplinary action when incidents are seen at the time by the match officials. ''I apologise for what I did and it was never my intention to hurt him,'' said Bosingwa. ''I know it was wrong and I apologise." ''It's always frustrating to lose big games and especially in this way. It was important to get points and not let Manchester United go. That didn't happen, so we are upset, but now we have to think about the next game.'' Meanwhile, Chelsea should receive another welcome slice of good news today if Lampard, as expected, has his red card overturned at a FA regulatory commission hearing. Chelsea appealed against Riley's decision to dismiss the midfielder following a challenge between him and Xabi Alonso in the 60th minute. TV replays appeared to show Lampard won the ball fairly before being kicked by Alonso. The England midfielder is scheduled to miss the home game against Hull along with away trips to Watford and Aston Villa if the appeal is unsuccessful. Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will understandably be delighted if Lampard's card is rescinded. But the Chelsea camp still feel they are being victimised by officials this season. Scolari's pre-match criticism that referees were too quick to dish out red cards to his players was echoed by England left-back Ashley Cole. He pointed to Manchester City's game at Stoke on Saturday as an example of their suffering. Rory Delap was sent off after clashing with City's Shaun Wright-Phillips, but the winger escaped punishment even though he kicked out at the Stoke player while on the ground. ''All the players watched what happened with Shaun Wright-Phillips (at Stoke) and no-one gets booked or questioned about it,'' he said. ''We do one little tackle and we seem to be getting yellow and red cards.'' Chelsea are now level on points with Aston Villa, three behind Liverpool and five behind leaders Manchester United, who have a game in hand. Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally
If Roman continues to be stingy, Chelsea is unlikely to capture either EPL or CL. The backline has aged, and Terry is no longer the same Terry who used to bang in important goals, though he seems to be doing it for England.
Get rid of the Incredible Sulk and Drogba. Put an entirely new forward line. |

CHELSEA TV EXCLUSIVE: QUARESMA ARRIVES
Chelsea TV interviews Quaresma Chelsea's newest player and our newest Portuguese international was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday afternoon. Ricardo Quaresma took the time to give the club's channel his first thoughts on the loan move taking him from Italy to England. Are you happy to be here in London now that the loan deal has gone through? I am very happy. The best thing for any football player is to play for big clubs and I was very lucky to go to Inter and now I am very thankful to Mr. Scolari and everybody at Chelsea who made this deal possible. Now I aim to play the best that I can to help Chelsea to achieve their goals because all I want is to show my qualities, to show what I am made of and hopefully I am going to help Chelsea achieve their goals. You are joining five Portuguese players here and you know the manager very well. How much will that help you to settle in? It is always nice to have people to help you when you come to a new club. Obviously Chelsea is a great club and it has great quality players and I am very proud that I can have the chance to represent such a great club. With all the other Portuguese players I am sure it is going to be easier for me and I am very glad to be here with them. The style of football that you play, do you think it is better suited to Chelsea and the Barclays Premier League than it was in Serie A? Everything depends on the team and sometimes on your luck. I try to give my best for the team when I play. I didn't have many opportunities to show my qualities at Inter but I believe these two are two great leagues in the world and all I want is to show what I am made of, to show hard work, to show all my qualities here. I am really glad I have this opportunity to play with such a good club as Chelsea. What will be your main goals at Chelsea and how would you describe yourself as a player? I don't like to talk about myself, I prefer that other people talk about me. But what I can promise is I am going to work very hard, I am going to give my best, I am going to prove that I deserve to be in this team and that I am the right player to help Chelsea achieve their goals. Hopefully I will be able to do so. You play on both flanks. How do you feel about the competition with the likes of Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou? It is always great to have great players in the team and to have this type of competition because this really makes you work hard. Life is a risk and sometimes you have to take risks to achieve the goals you set yourself and that is what I intend to do. I believe the competition is good and these two are players that I admire. My intention is to work hard to gain my place in the team and I believe competing with great players is what makes you a better player. You scored against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge playing for Porto is 2006/07 and there was a great piece of skill when you hit the crossbar in Porto as well. What is your memory of your games against Chelsea? It was a great experience for every player, especially for myself. We strive to play these big games, that is what mostly motivates us players, playing great games against great clubs and great players. I was happy that I was able to score here at Chelsea and when I hit the bar, unfortunately I couldn't score there but it was a great experience for me. I hope now to do the same things for Chelsea, rather than against them. What is your message for the Chelsea fans? I hope to please the supporters as much as I hope to please the team because that is what we play for, that is what motivates us. I have been happy enough to have the support of all teams I have played for before and I do hope to have the same here. I hope the supporters will like me and will see my qualities because I am going to do my best for them and hopefully I am going to give the supporters lots of happiness. FRANK CLEARED
Lampard red card appeal upheld The Football Association has announced that Frank Lampard's claim for wrongful dismissal following his sending-off on Sunday has been successful. An FA statement reads: 'At an independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard was upheld. As a result, Lampard's three-match suspension has been withdrawn. Lampard was shown a red card for serious foul play during Sunday's Premier League match against Liverpool.' It is the second time in the past 12 months that the Chelsea midfielder has made a successful claim. In March 2008, a ban following a red card at West Ham was similarly quashed. Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally
Scolari sacked as Chelsea manager
Luiz Felipe Scolari has been sensationally sacked by Chelsea. Chelsea have dropped 16 points at home this season. The Brazilian, who joined the Premier League club last summer, was expected to reinvigorate the club's fortunes and lead them to titles at home and in Europe, but after a poor run of form the axe has fallen. Avram Grant, the man Scolari replaced, has emerged as one of the candidates on Chelsea's shortlist to replace the World Cup-winning manager. The other name thought to be on Chelsea's list is Russia's national team coach, Guus Hiddink though the bookmakers' favourites are a dream team of Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke. Much of the talk among Chelsea fans already revolves around the combination of club legend Zola and former Blues player and coach Clarke, who left the Bridge to join up with his former team-mate at West Ham. Messages on banners unfurled at Stamford Bridge on Saturday demanded the end of Scolari's reign and the appointment of Zola and Clarke. Ray Wilkins replaces Scolari on a temporary basis until a full-time replacement can be appointed. A statement on the Chelsea website read: "Luiz Felipe Scolari has been dismissed as manager of Chelsea Football Club today (Monday) with immediate effect. The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager. "Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon. Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season. "In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for we felt the only option was to make the change now. The search for a new manager has already started and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible." One name to be discounted is Roberto Mancini, according to his agent. Mancini, who is unemployed since being sacked by Inter Milan last summer, has been linked with a move to the London club in recent months. However, his agent Giorgio De Giorgis has had no contact with Chelsea. De Giorgis said to the Italian media: "No-one has contacted us, hence, I exclude the possibility that Mancini will go to Chelsea. We are aware of Scolari's sacking but they would have contacted us in the case they had though about him (Mancini). Instead, they have contacted others." Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally
CHELSEA TV EXCLUSIVE: NEW MAN'S FIRST THOUGHTS
Chelsea TV interviews Guus Hiddink Guus Hiddink spent Thursday afternoon watching training and meeting players and people he will work with until May. His last task before leaving Cobham was to tell Chelsea TV his early impressions and his aims while here. This is what he said: You said you would have said no to any other job. Why yes to Chelsea? Everyone knows the relationship between Chelsea and the Russian Football Federation, and the academy of development of young players all over the country is significant. When the situation occurred as has happened now I was asked to come because of the relationship with Roman Abramovich as well. Of course it is a big club as well, and let me be honest, I came because they asked me to join the club for the upcoming time. You couldn't come at a more pressurised time, three big games, and you have to win. You are putting the pressure on me! That is normal, I know of course I have to live as soon as possible in the depth of the club, but I just talked to the players for a few minutes in the dressing room. I am not just here to add to my experience to the club and Premier League. Also I want to see these results as soon as possible. You are leaving the team on Saturday [at Watford] to Ray Wilkins? Yes. I will talk now daily with Ray and all the people within the club to get together everything as fast as possible. But Ray will do the game against Watford. Then in the League we play Aston Villa, a huge match. We could be 10 points behind Man United by then. Are we still in a title race? The team are in several races, the FA Cup is there, the Champions League and also the League. There is a 10 point difference but if you look in the past of this league and other leagues as well, some things can happen during the final stages of the championship. How much do you know of the Premier League and the Chelsea players? I worked several years with Alex but I know the players of Chelsea and other clubs as well. I know almost all of the players. To be honest I don't know the players from the Academy and I see them participating already with the first team which is good. I have to know them better, how they play etc, but generally speaking I know the players. The games against Juventus are coming up. You won the European Cup in 1988 and went close in 2005. Is wanting to win it again a big part of season? All the three roads are very important. The next game at Watford, and then Aston Villa and Juventus and then you go on the path of the Champions League. That is so attractive. The club has the experience to go to the Final. You managed against Chelsea once before in 1998. Don't remind me of that! I know it was the Super Cup in Monaco, and where we lost to Chelsea, that's true. Are there team shapes you come with, always the same system, or do you see what is available first and decide? I see what is available, I see what suits and I see the culture and what is demanded. When I started in Korea or Russia is different to when you start at an already very achieved club. But I like to make analysis as fast as possible and come to composure which gives efficiency to the team and hopefully as many points as possible and a style of play. So will you have an idea next week? I am not thinking that rigid. Whether you play with 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 or whatever, it is very important what they do as a team when we have possession and when we have none. That is even more important. With that I am looking forward to the cooperation of Ray Wilkins and the other coaches as well. With regards to backroom staff, are you going to be at some point bringing in your own people? Not yet. I am not in favour wherever I go to bring in my group of assistants. I like to go in as soon as possible to alert myself to what is required and then of course we make an analysis and talk to the people. If something is needed, we can do it but not in principle. I am looking forward to working with people who are working here as all kinds of staff and if needed, if it can contribute anything to the benefit and well being of players at the club, okay - but not before. You have a reputation for success more or less everywhere you have been. What qualities will you bring to Chelsea, what do you think you can bring to help us to do better? I hope as soon as possible, because I don't like to give anyone much time, not me and not the players, to bring out of every member, especially the players, a little bit more than sometimes they think they can bring. They are very committed, I have seen the training session, but sometimes you can have a little bit different approach to get even more efficiency out of the players. That is where I am aiming at and if you add those individuals together and make a team, then everyone can bring a little bit more. Not just in commitment. It is too easy to talk commitment because everyone has an obligation to be committed, but in the tactical and the strategic approach during the game. We might gain some profit. In terms of approach to games, would you say you are an attack-minded coach or are you naturally cautious? No, I am not that cautious. I think you must be organised in every part of the pitch but I think, especially in England, they like the approach of attacking the team. You have achieved in most places you have been but you have not yet won a title in one of the bigger countries. Is that something you feel personally is missing from your list of achievements? With Real Madrid we did not have the title of the league. We won the World Club Cup, that is a good achievement, but never a title in this rather short period. I haven't worked in England so far which is considered the biggest league in the world so that would be a huge achievement but so far, it is okay. We try to go for this title, yes. You are here on a temporary basis until May. What happens if you really like it and the club really like you? Any chance you will be staying on? I have seen it here now and I felt the atmosphere already in a few hours but what happens after May is clear because it is rather difficult to do the two jobs and I have my obligations in Russia. It is rather difficult because the Premier League is very challenging. We can do it now because there are one or two games until June with the national team of Russia. That is why we said we can do it now and we can do it full-hearted and committed. Will you not have any rest because when you are not doing Chelsea you have to watch Russian players? I am not the youngest manager anymore but what gives me a lot of energy is the atmosphere at the club and the atmosphere and energy of players. I consider myself as being very privileged to work everyday and I don't think I need a holiday tomorrow or whenever. I take my holiday of course but now I am energetic to start. Didier Drogba has confirmed what I had been suspecting all along - that Chelsea players lacked fitness. That accounted for their lack of concentration during games, especially during the final 15 minutes.
