Carling Cup Final Preview

Chelsea face London rivals Tottenham in the first Carling Cup final to be played at Wembley since 2000.


The Blues will be looking to defend the trophy they won in Cardiff 12 months ago after a fiery encounter with Arsenal.


Ugly scenes marred the end of that match as Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor and John Obi Mikel were all sent off and there were seven minutes of stoppage time.


This year's final promises to be memorable for footballing reasons as Tottenham go in search of their first major trophy since they triumphed over Leicester in the 1999 final.


Martin Jol was in charge at Tottenham as they began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough, before Juande Ramos came in for the game against Blackpool in the next round.


Ramos has a superb record in cup competitions and has led Spurs impressively to the final.


The highlight of their run was undoubtedly the 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal in the semi-final, which upset the form book and suggested Tottenham were also capable of turning over Chelsea in the final.


Spurs' sluggish performance in their Uefa Cup clash against Slavia Prague on Thursday betrayed their claims that they would not start focusing on the final until Friday morning.


Duo set to start for Spurs

Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane played a half each against Slavia but are almost certain to start together up front on Sunday.


Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Jenas and Steed Malbranque are certainties for midfield places but Ramos faces a dilemma over whether to include Didier Zokora or Tom Huddlestone in the centre.


An even trickier decision for Ramos will be whether to keep Paul Robinson in goal after his impressive display against Slavia or recall Radek Cerny.


Ledley King has been saved in recent weeks with the final in mind, and he is set to partner Jonathan Woodgate in central defence even if he is not 100 per cent fit.


Chelsea are still in the hunt for the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, and they will be hoping to take the first step towards an unprecedented quadruple.


Tricky decisions

Avram Grant made 11 changes to his side for the midweek game against Olympiakos and he is set to tinker yet again.


He is spoilt for choice with no new injury worries, and must decide on the formation of his team as well as the personnel.


Didier Drobga and Nicolas Anelka have yet to play in tandem and it seems improbable that Grant would alter his approach and go with two strikers.


Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou appear to be vying for two spots, while Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack and Claude Makelele will all be desperate to feature in the centre of midfield.


John Terry could be recalled in defence but Ricardo Carvalho and Alex have both impressed in recent weeks.

GRANT'S SPECIAL WEMBLEY GUEST

As he approaches his first chance to win silverware as Chelsea manager, Avram Grant has spoken openly about influences that made him the man he is.


For anyone involved in a major sporting showpiece such as a Wembley cup final, the sense of pride can only be magnified by having family and friends inside the stadium to watch.


As he leads the Chelsea players out of the tunnel for the first Carling Cup final at the rebuilt national stadium, Grant will experience those emotions as his father, Meir, watches on from his seat.


The two celebrated Meir's 80th birthday on Thursday and the party continues at the match against Tottenham. A ticket from his son helps to repay money borrowed by a football-obsessed young Avram to watch numerous cup finals in the past.


'My father is a great man, one of the greatest that I know,' the Chelsea manager claims.


'He is an optimist like I have never seen in my life, and he suffered a lot when he was young. He was a survivor of the holocaust. I have the same name as my grandfather who died in the holocaust with many others of his family.'


Avram's father was just 13 in 1941 when his family fled their native Poland and sought refuge in the forests of northern Russia. Meir survived the harsh conditions but his father, mother and five of his brothers and sisters didn't.


'What impressed me about my father, and he gave me a lot in my life, is that he always saw the positive,' Avram reveals. 'Even when I was at school, he saw only the good marks.


'And he is still like this now. If you speak with him about the past, he will say there were wrong things in the past, but I live in the future - and he is 80! I wish him all the best. I love him.'


The Chelsea boss has also paid tribute to the part played by his late mother, Aliza, an immigrant from Iraq who Meir met after relocating to a town near Tel Aviv.


'My mother came from totally another world from my father and they were totally different. My mother was a perfectionist and did not accept it if you got 99 marks from 100. My father would accept everything in a positive way.


'Everything that happened to me in my life, I can only thank them for this. They gave me a lot, without them I couldn't succeed.'


One strength of character Avram believes he enjoys in adult life is the ability to thrive under pressure, even at the levels that accompany a London derby Carling Cup final.


'The pressure of this job is exactly like I thought, not more, not less.


'It is good pressure. The good thing in football, especially when you are at a big club, is the pressure to think how to win. I wish to have this pressure all my life, I cannot live without this.


'I am not worried about myself because if I don't take this trophy on Sunday, I will take trophies at Chelsea in the future. But even if it wasn't good for my future, I would want to win this game anyway, especially when it is so important to the fans and the club.'

PRE-CUP FINAL BRIEFING: CHELSEA V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Chelsea and Spurs will roll back the years by filling Wembley Stadium once again on Sunday. Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton preview a rematch from 41 years ago.


Rick begins the look at an all-London affair.


Let's begin with a remarkable fact: in modern times, just like Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur have never defeated a full complement of 11 Chelsea players. Their two victories in the long barren spell since February 1990 - in January 2002 and November 2006 - were both achieved against 10 men in blue. Don't get too upset, Spurs fans - it may be the only time your team is mentioned in the same breath as the Spanish giants.


Well, not quite. Once Chelsea had seen off Everton and Arsenal were demolished and the League Cup final pairing for Wembley was decided, thoughts turned to the 1967 FA Cup final tie at the same venue, where Chelsea and Tottenham met in the first 'cockney cup final'.


Back then Spurs had two former Chelsea stars in their ranks. One was the great prodigal son, Jimmy Greaves. The other was former our schemer and skipper, Terry Venables, who manager Tommy Docherty had eased out in favour of Charlie Cooke during a series of Fairs Cup semi-final matches, the year before, against ? Barça.


Venables and Greaves weren't star performers in the 1967 final. They didn't have to be. Chelsea defeated themselves, and the hurt from that day hasn't lessened for many fans over the four decades since.


'It's a long time to wait for revenge,' says all-time top goalscorer Bobby Tambling from his home in Ireland. He won't be over for the game but will watch it on the TV surrounded by family and friends, rooting for the Blues.


He's also hoping Chelsea's groundwork is a little better than it was 41 years ago at Wembley. Back then the Doc, a young manager, had a novel approach to the club's first FA Cup final since 1915. He had seen how Chelsea had frozen in semi-finals over recent seasons and resolved to remove all stress from the build-up.


Fun-loving Doc never had a problem putting people at their ease, and with nothing to fight for in the league, his players prepared for the last match of the season simply by being kept fit and happy. Yet Chelsea's bustling style depended on confidence and sharpness, and having lost their final league clash at Leicester, the squad spent the 10 free days before Wembley without adequate mental or physical preparation for the biggest game of their lives.


As the big day approached, harmony was destroyed by an argument over match tickets. The players - minus the injured Peter Osgood - were seething at the club's supposed failure to deliver on a promise of a large ticket allocation for them.


Worse, Chelsea's laid-back approach extended to travel arrangements: Bobby doesn't remember staying in a hotel the night before the game, but was picked up by friends and driven to Stamford Bridge, where a coach drove them across London to Wembley.


The players enjoyed the wonderful pageantry of fans on Wembley Way, but the purpose of their visit had not yet sunk in. It was only when they walked out on to the pitch for kick-off that Bobby and others realised how ill-prepared they were for the emotions of the event.


There was, he says, a sudden 'This is it' moment. 'I couldn't have been more shaken if people had jumped out on me at a birthday party yelling "Surprise!",' he laughs. Unfortunately, on the day the Doc's best-laid plans had turned men to mice.


Even though it had been five years since their last Wembley appearance, Tottenham's focus was superior and decisive, and the high profile derby finished 2-1, Bobby scoring Chelsea's consolation goal.


Nowadays it is Chelsea who are the more regular finalists. No Blues fan should need reminding what a run we are in. This is the ninth final in 11 years, we are current holders of both domestic trophies, and we were last out/first back either side of the famous stadium's renovation.


If Chelsea win the League Cup on Sunday, we move into second place on the all-time list of winners of this competition, level with Aston Villa on five. (The Football League have confirmed that we don't unfortunately, get to keep it.)


Spurs have not figured in a final for six years when they lost in this competition to Blackburn Rovers. It's their first visit to England's national stadium since 1999 and a last-minute 1-0 win over Leicester.


Yet this Tottenham side under Juande Ramos and Gus Poyet is a more serious proposition than it has been for years. They have supposedly dumped the biscuits and shed the lard, and look a sharper, better organised unit.


The 5-1 semi-final victory over a weak Arsenal team put Poyet, the former Chelsea midfielder, at the centre of a triangle of famous five-goal wins, the other two happening when he scored twice in Chelsea's slaughter of the Gunners 5-0 at Highbury in November 1998 and played for Spurs in the 5-1 defeat of the Blues previously mentioned.


In 1967 Chelsea's lack of inches at the back was ruthlessly exploited through Alan Gilzean's aerial prowess. Although some have detected a similarity between the Scottish forward and current star Dimitar Berbatov, the tall Bulgarian has some ground to make up. He has only scored once against Chelsea in five games.


Our only meeting since Ramos moved in from Seville was the routine 2-0 home win last month, days after the League Cup semis. Crucial to the Spaniard's relative success has been a shoring up of his team's famously porous defence, beginning with central midfield. As at Seville, the aloof, disciplinarian manager demands his middlemen protect the centre of defence before thinking about breaking forward. He has them fired up and tackles can fly in from Jamie O'Hara and Jermaine Jenas, with widemen Steed Malbranque and Aaron Lennon asked to double up on tricky wingers. The aim is always to force opponents wide and away from danger areas.


In defence, he has experimented with converting big Tom Huddlestone, a talented but unwieldy midfielder, into a centre-back who is comfortable on the ball. Ramos's rationale is that he needs to find a solid partner for the inconsistent (and injured) Michael Dawson when Ledley King is out.


He will be desperate for the influential King and Dawson to return for this game after Thursday's exertions in Europe, although Jonathan Woodgate has often performed well against Chelsea in the past. Another recent signing Alan Hutton, cup tied for the UEFA Cup, is also available.


Chelsea's injury list is now almost empty, but not everyone is fully fit. The side that played in freezing Athens on Tuesday looked to have been picked with Sunday's silverware in mind, but no one is second-guessing Avram Grant just yet.


When José Mourinho made his team selection for the first trophy of his reign in February 2005, he picked the strongest available, knowing opponents Liverpool would do the same. That 3-2 win meant an awful lot to fans, but more importantly it welded the players and management together for bigger challenges to come.


If Spurs are anxious to see the Chelsea teamsheet, one name should worry them more than most. As we know, Frank Lampard completed his extraordinary century of goals last weekend. Analysing who he has scored his 101 goals against is interesting (full details below).


He's notched three goals against the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. Four when playing Newcastle and Pompey, and five past Villa, Everton and Southampton.


But his real whipping boys come next. Frank has scored six against Bolton, Fulham and, you guessed it, Tottenham Hotspur.


The only team with greater reason to fear him than Spurs are Blackburn Rovers, who have witnessed the well-known kiss-and-point celebration on seven occasions.


Here's to another finger towards the moon on Sunday, and the purging of 41 years of hurt in the process.

Chelsea are competing in our ninth cup final in 11 years and third League Cup final in four seasons.


Tottenham are appearing in their first final tie in six years.


It is 18 years and 43 games since Tottenham last beat an 11-man Chelsea. It was in February 1990 at Stamford Bridge when Gary Lineker and David Howells scored for the visitors to secure a 2-1 victory. John Bumstead replied for the Blues. Bobby Campbell and Terry Venables managed the teams.


Spurs' two wins against us since that time came when we were down to 10 men. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was sent off in our 5-1 League Cup semi final drubbing in 2002 and John Terry suffered the same fate in November 2006 when we lost 2-1 at White Hart Lane.


It is an extraordinary fact that Chelsea and Arsenal's long unbeaten runs against Tottenham both ended in a 5-1 defeat in a League Cup semi-final second leg at White Hart Lane. Chelsea's was 26 games between 1990 and 2002 and Arsenal's 21 matches without defeat ended four weeks ago. William Gallas was on the receiving end of both of them.


A win against Spurs will ensure a 22nd FA Cup and League Cup game without defeat and beat Arsenal's 21 game unbeaten domestic cup run set between 1992 and 1993. Only Blackburn (23 games, 1883 to 1886) have a better record in English football history.


Chelsea are unbeaten in 16 (12 wins and four draws) since our defeat at the Emirates before Christmas.


Our North London rivals have not been given any clues of what our line up might be at Wembley. We lined up against Huddersfield last Saturday and Olympiacos on Tuesday with two completely different starting elevens.


Chelsea have been beaten twice (Man Utd and Arsenal away) in 34 games in all competitions under Avram Grant in a run that has seen 24 wins and 22 clean sheets.


We are unbeaten in the last 52 games in all competitions when scoring the opening goal - 48 wins, four draws. The last occasion was at Tottenham in November 2006.


Chelsea have not lost with Ricardo Carvalho in the side since that November 2006 Tottenham defeat - a total of 58 games.


Tottenham are undefeated in five and have lost only two of their last 12 games.


This will be both Tottenham and Chelsea's sixth League Cup final appearance.

MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 TOTTENHAM 2

Another Didier Drogba cup final goal was not enough as Chelsea allowed Tottenham to come from behind and take the Carling Cup with an extra-time winner.


For the first time since 2002, the Blues failed to triumph when making the final of a knockout competition as they failed to take control of a London derby in which set-pieces decided the day.


Drogba's strike in itself was a free-kick, but Bebatov put Spurs level from the penalty spot in the second half before Woodgate forced a header from a Jenas free-kick past Cech for the winner.


Contrary to much media speculation before kick-off, Avram Grant selected both John Terry and Frank Lampard. When it came to choosing his forward line for his first English cup final, the manager opted for Drogba and Anelka in the starting line-up together for the first time. Wright-Phillips made up the three. Mikel returned to the side as the holding midfielder. and at the full-back, Belletti and Wayne Bridge were to chosen pair.


The start from the Chelsea right-back was not good. The most experienced member of the side, Belletti nervously rolled his first pass into no man's land where Keane grabbed possession, advancing before unleashing a shot that was deflected wide.


From the corner, Drogba impeded King sufficiently for the Spurs captain to hook well over.


Chelsea had survived a dodgy opening minute but then on 8 minutes, we conceded a corner that Chimbonda looped onto the crossbar with a far-post header. Then Berbatov headed wastefully wide when meeting a Keane crossed unmarked.


Chelsea found a way into the Spurs area briefly when Wright-Phillips's low cross tried to find Drogba and Anelka but the Tottenham defence cleared.


On 18 minutes, Chelsea conceded a free-kick when Terry tugged back Berbatov and again the marking was loose when Lennon played the ball in. Woodgate missed with his header.


The game was lacking the fire and brimstone of some London derbies. The first Chelsea foul hadn't been committed until minute 11, Tottenham lasted another 11 minutes before transgressing. Whether by design or chance, Spurs were attacking repeatedly down the Chelsea right. The Blues were attempting to thread our way through more centrally but it was a congested path.


On 25 minutes, Chelsea won our first corner from a Wright-Phillips cross. It was headed clear by Woodgate.


Spurs were soon down the other end and when the ball was headed clear, Malbranque struck the first shot on target of the game, Cech scrambling it round the post.


Chelsea counter-attacked from the corner, Lampard drilling the Carling Cup holders' first strike at goal well over from 25 yards.


Two free-kicks from central positions followed for Avram Grant's men - the first deflected over from Lampard, the second curled just two yards wide by Drogba.


On 37 minutes, Zokora was the first player booked, for a late tackle on his fellow Ivorian, Drogba.


This time, Drogba broke the sequence by claiming the strike and as Robinson's first movement was behind his wall, the man with the Golden Boot placed the ball low to the keeper's left.


There were 37 minutes gone. Didier had once again opened the scoring in a Wembley cup final.


On 43 minutes, the lead was put under serious threat when a Lampard mistake led to Berbatov being played through. As the Bulgarian attempted to balance for the shot, Essien did brilliantly to wrestle possession away.


With that escape, the Blues were able to go into half-time ahead and knowing we hadn't lost a game having taken the lead since November 2006. The opposition that day however was Tottenham.


The opening 15 minutes of the second-half were more spread although neither side turned the space into chances. There was a couple of minutes of worry after Drogba appeared to suffer a leg injury that he was struggling to shake off, but he did eventually recover.


On the hour, Spurs made a switch, Chimbonda replaced by Huddlestone. Malbranque went to left-back.


Wright-Phillips was only a whisker away from beating Robinson to the ball as he chased down a back pass and then Lampard played in Anelka who was tackled as he attempted to shoot. There were hopes of a Chelsea improvement.


However on 68 minutes, the previously subdued Lennon worked a crossing opportunity and under pressure from Huddlestone, Bridge handled as the ball dropped and bounced, the linesman giving the decision.


Berbatov wrong-footed Cech with the spot-kick.


Grant reacted quickly to the equaliser, bringing on Kalou for Wright-Phillips with 71 minutes gone.


On 80 minutes it took the goalkeeping genius that is Petr Cech to keep the scores level.


Spurs worked the offside perfectly to send Zokora clean through but as the midfielder struggled to control the ball, the Chelsea keeper closed and saved the shot with his face. Despite that painful blow, he was still there to fling himself and pressure Zokora into blasting his follow-up shot wide.


Three minutes later, Cech was there again, saving Berbatov's shot on the turn from 12 yards.


With four minutes of normal time left on the clock, Essien for a split second looked to have picked Drogba out at the far post with a 45-yard diagonal pass but it was just out of reach.


That was the Ghanaian's last touch. He was replaced by Ballack.


Lampard had a difficult shooting chance under pressure with 88 minutes gone and struck wide. In the final minute of stoppage time, a Spurs long throw was knocked on and with Chelsea hearts in mouths, Keane's over-head kick cleared the bar.


Three minutes into extra-time, Spurs took the lead and yet again, a set-piece was responsible. The free-kick had been conceded by a clumsy Anelka foul and when Jenas curled it into the danger zone, Woodgate went up with Cech. The defender got the first touch, Cech pushed it out but only onto Woodgate again, the ball cannoning in.


Mikel was booked five minutes in for body-checking Jenas and three minutes later was replaced by Joe Cole, allowing Anelka into a central role for the first time as the Blues essential went with four up front.


Lampard worked Robinson with a free-kick from an acute angle and on the same patch of turf on the left, Carvalho was booked for a lunge at Zokora.


The first period of extra time ended with a goal deficit still to overcome. Chelsea stood and listened to instructions while Spurs players lay on the turf for leg stretches.


The first shooting chance of the second period was Cole's after a corner but from 20 yards, his effort drifted off-target.


Not so the attempt by Kalou with eight minutes to go after he cut inside Woodgate but his 12-yard effort was beaten out by Robinson. Tainio was booked for time-wasting as the seconds ticked on, two colleagues would follow him into the book.


Cole latched onto a King mis-header but his shot was tame and Zokora again lacked the composure to make the most of a counter-attack before Chelsea camped in the Spurs half for the remaining five minutes.


Belletti blasted high over the bar to relieve the pressure and Spurs were asked to survive one more corner before the final whistle.


That whistle came before Kalou was found in front of goal by a Terry header, that conclusion to the game angering the Chelsea players, but the damage had already been done.

Chelsea to show Olympiacos respect

Any team with the ability to win away to Werder Bremen and S.S. Lazio deserves the utmost respect and Chelsea FC coach Avram Grant believes it would be folly to dismiss the threat that Olympiacos CFP pose when the sides resume their UEFA Champions League first knockout round tie after a goalless first leg.


Positive omens

Nevertheless, Chelsea will be favourites to progress and claim a quarter-final berth for the fourth time in five seasons. They have a fully-fit squad, enjoyed a resounding 4-0 victory at West Ham United FC on Saturday – despite playing with ten men for 54 minutes following the dismissal of Frank Lampard – and make no secret of the fact this competition is their priority this term. "We are a big club and we want to be bigger, we want to get to the Champions League final because we have not been there before," said Grant.


'Tough game'

"It's not easy because there are many good clubs trying for the same thing but that is our target. It is the priority of this club and also of me. Our players have experience of this stage, though we know it will be a tough game. Olympiacos have won at Werder Bremen and also at Lazio [this season], two very good teams. But we are at home so we want to win." The Israeli recognises that he will disappoint some major names and will think long and hard about his selection after receiving fierce criticism for the changes he made before the recent English League Cup final loss to Tottenham Hotspur FC.


Achieving the best

Onslaught

Lemonis is expecting an onslaught from Chelsea but reckons his side have the strength to recover should they fall behind. "We have responded in the past and I am hoping we can do so again," he said. "The first few minutes will be important as Chelsea try to control the pace of the game but I'm confident we can cope with that."

Chelsea cruise into quarter-finals

Chelsea FC underlined their class as they comfortably dismissed the challenge of Olympiacos CFP to book their accustomed place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the fourth time in five seasons.


Smooth progress

An early Michael Ballack header set Avram Grant's team on their way and confirmation came as Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou added further strikes. It would have been more but for the defiance of Olympiacos goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis, who was setting a Greek record of 53 UEFA Champions League appearances.


Goalkeeping change

An injury to Petr Čech brought a late change to the Chelsea lineup with Carlo Cudicini stepping up in his place. The initial signs were that it was going to be an easy night for the keeper as wave upon wave of attacks bore down on the Olympiacos defence. A John Terry header in the second minute was never threatening but 60 seconds later there was a real scare for the visitors as Joe Cole seized upon Didier Drogba's half-blocked effort and shot against the upright. An offside flag gave the Greek champions a reprieve from more serious damage but it proved only temporary.


Breakthrough

With five minutes on the clock, a dangerous low cross from Ashley Cole was cleared but from the throw-in Chelsea's alertness paid rich dividends as Lampard dispatched a cross and Ballack, afforded too much space, nodded in. The pressure continued as a difficult chance fell to Drogba while Claude Makelele was presented with enough room to have a rare crack at goal.


Easy finish

Olympiacos were finding it difficult to impose themselves, difficult to maintain any possession They were especially vulnerable down their left flank where Paulo Ferreira required no invitation to bomb forward. The second goal came from just that area as the ball was worked neatly to Ballack who had a second goal in his sights only for Nikopolidis to deny him at point-blank range. However, the keeper was unable to hold on to the ball and Lampard was on hand to finish.


Third blow

The opening goal need not have concerned Olympiacos unduly. After all, they had fallen behind in all three group-stage away trips and in two of those they had managed to go on and win the game. However, at 2-0, it was clear Chelsea had the measure of them and they were able to increase their lead further at the start of the second half. Lampard's corner from the left was missed by Ballack and then Ricardo Carvalho, which left Kalou with the simple task of prodding home from barely two metres for his first UEFA Champions League goal.


Away support

It was now a question of how many Chelsea would score while the fans who had made the long journey from Athens refused to be downcast, continuing to sing their hearts out. At least in the 61st minute they had something to cheer as Fernando Belluschi aimed a free-kick on target. Cudicini was behind it all the way. With seven minutes remaining Belluschi fired against the bar and Chelsea's long sequence without conceding a goal in the competition, nearly ten hours, was also at risk when Paraskevas Antzas headed goalwards but Cudicini again made the save.
