Depends on how complicated the case, how much you implicated yourself when SP interviewed you. Be prepared, case may take at least half a year before it goes to court and sentence finally passed.

In meantime, do yourself a favour and not to get yourself into any further troubles with the law.

Having a lawyer or not does not determine the seriousness of the case. Basically, the lawyer will help you to fight the case if u do not admit your charge. If you admit, then the lawyer will help in your mitigation, which can be done by yourself if you have no lawyer. But of cos, doing it yourself is quite difficult becos you do not understand the law and it might not be as effective.

TS, I am no SP or expert on them. Just my knowledge gathered from friends through the years.

When they will interview you sometimes depends on the Investigating Officer handling your case. If he in involved with heavy case loads, he takes longer to come back to you. Usually he will first ask you to go to the station or Cantonment for interview and then make statements. Duration again depends on the case and what you say, and what evidence they are able to gather, from you and other witnesses. Thereafter, he will make a report to his superiors who will then decide how and whether to proceed with the case. Where the case is serious or where evidence is deemed strong enough then the case will proceed and be presented to Court and the perpetrator will be charged. As mentioned earlier, how long between first interview and being charged depends on the circumstances of the case. Usually takes at least a few months. During the process, there may be occassions when you may be called upon suddenly to go meet up with them. It is disruptive to daily life and work but then it is a price to pay for doing sometime out of the ordinary in legalistic sinkieland. Some stress is inevitable.

Whether to have lawyer? If you have the financial ability, then for your peace of mind, find a lawyer who can advise you on what to do. If not, as mentioned by other brothers, decide if you want to consider admitting guilt early and seek some reduction in penalty. If you think you want to fight the case because you consider that you are not guilty then good luck to you.
