Pele: Brazil 'not ready' for World Cup

Brazil legend Pele has expressed his concern 2 ESPNsoccernet tat his home country is "not ready" 2 host the World Cup in 2014.

Pele cited chaotic organisation & communication difficulties as the biggest problems facing Brazil, & revealed he is now working with president Dilma Rousseff in a bid 2 get the World Cup finals back on track.

"Brazil is not ready," said Pele. "Not yet, it is not ready. With the team we hv no problem, it is easy.

"The biggest problem, I think, is the organisation, tat is a big problem, so 2 is the communications. I m now working directly with the President of Brazil 2 get it working & she is doing her best 2 help out with the organisation."

However, Pele did reveal he is optimistic the finals will run smoothly by the time 2014 rolls around, though the legend's fears currently going on in his homeland still come as something of a shock. FIFA 2 has expressed its concerns, but Pele's comments can be considered the 1st time any1 within the World Cup inner circle has confessed 2 the significance of the problems.

Pele's insight also comes on the day Brazil's sports minister Orlando Silva resigned following corruption allegations accusing him of participating in unlawful payment projects. Silva, who has become the 6th member forced 2 leave parliamentary office since June, claims his resignation was not linked 2 corruption but rather an effort 2 avoid the impending political turmoil of his government.

Responsible 4 the management of the 2014 World Cup & the 2016 Olympics, Silva has been accused of kickback schemes linked 2 Brazil's social sports projects. Gil Castello Blanco, a spokesperson 4 the watchdog group Contas Abertas, maintained tat Silva's departure would not halt preparations 4 the World Cup.

"I don't think it will hv any effect on the preparations 4 our 2 mega events, the World Cup & the Olympics. Silva is more of a figurehead. The preparations will go ahead without him," Castello Blanco said.

Silva's exit comes not long aft the ministers 4 agriculture, tourism, transport & defence were forced out of position following similar irregularities & suspicions, while FIFA has voiced its concerns tat Brazil will struggle 2 host the World Cup in 2014.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke, meanwhile, is concerned over delays @ new stadiums & developments 2 existing stadia. Adjustments 2 the world famous Maracana, in particular, may not be completed in time.

Valcke criticised the slow development taking place & believes the South American country will not be ready 2 properly host the Confederations Cup in 2013, which considered a warm-up 4 world football's showpiece event.

"There is alot of work 2 deliver," he told the Inside World Football Forum. "We don't hv stadiums, we don't hv airports, we don't hv a national transportation system in place & we r 1 month away fr the preliminary draw.

"The Maracana is definitely not currently a World Cup stadium & tat's why it's closed. It will be ready @ the last minute, a few months maybe, even a few weeks b4 the tournament if they don't speed up the process.

"In Sao Paulo, the main city in Brazil, they will not even be able 2 play the Confederations Cup in 2013 becos the stadium will not be ready."

Valcke believes 1 obstacle is tat Brazil r 2 preoccupied with winning the competition, saying: "In South Africa the main goal was 2 show the world tat Africa could organise a World Cup. In Brazil, in a way the main issue is 2 win it. Otherwise they will talk abt failure."

Kewell ruled out of Australia qualifier

Harry Kewell has been ruled out of Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Thailand, in which Australia need 2 pick up a point 2 book their place in the next round.

Kewell was injured during Friday's shock 1-0 loss 2 Oman in Muscat & was replaced in the 54th min by Robbie Kruse.

The Melbourne Victory star was found 2 hv aggravated a muscle strain & coach Holger Osieck & medical staff agreed 2 let the 33-year-old return home 4 treatment. The extent of the injury is unclear @ tis stage.
