Barcelona full back set to sign

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Barcelona for Brazilian full-back Juliano Belletti.

Jose Mourinho has turned to Belletti after the Premier League club failed to strike a deal for Daniel Alves.

Sevilla had rejected Chelsea's recent bid for Alves, prompting Mourinho to move for the right-back's compatriot.

Belletti is undergoing a medical with Chelsea and will discuss personal terms over a move to Stamford Bridge.

He has slipped out of Frank Rijkaard's first-team plans at Camp Nou, with Gianluca Zambrotta currently preferred by Barca.

I support the idea of bringing in Belleti. I don't know this Brazilian well ? Did you participate in the recent COPA ?

I'm only worried that at 31, he may not have the speed to cope with Ronaldo or Torres.

Ferreira is too soft; Johnson too erratic. I have never been comfortable with either.

As for left back, I always feel Chelsea play better with Wayne Bridge instead of Cashley.

I fully support the decision to lower the cost of the team. Let Man Utd and Liverpool spend big.

BELLETTI MOVE COMPLETED

Juliano Belletti signed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge on Thursday afternoon having completed a medical and agreed personal terms.


The right-back (pictured with club secretary David Barnard) moves from FC Barcelona for an undisclosed fee.


He spoke to Chelsea TV immediately after putting pen to paper and revealed just how swiftly the deal had come together.


'It has all been a great surprise,' he said. 'Just yesterday I talked with Chelsea. We reached an agreement and so did Chelsea and Barcelona with no problem.


'I am a typical Brazilian full-back,' he added. 'I like to get forward up the wing.'


The full interview can be seen on Blues News tonight at 6.30pm, repeated at 10pm.


The 31-year-old is most famous for scoring the winning goal in the 2006 Champions League Final against Arsenal when he came on as a second-half substitute. It was his first goal for Barcelona.


He was signed by the Catalan giants in 2004 from Villarreal, having moved from his native Brazil to Spain two years earlier. At Villarreal he was a UEFA Cup semi-finalist.


In his first season at Barça he played in both legs of the epic Champions League knockout tie between Chelsea and Barcelona when José Mourinho's side went through with a 4-2 second-leg win at Stamford Bridge.


In the first-leg at Camp Nou, Belletti had the misfortune to score an own-goal as his side won 2-1.


In addition to his Champions League winners' medal, he won two Spanish league titles and two Spanish Supercups during his time with Barcelona.


Following on from the signing of Alex, Chelsea now have two Brazilian international defenders in our squad. Belletti has been capped 23 times by his country and has scored two goals at international level.


He began his career in his homeland with Cruzeiro where he spent two years before moving to Sao Paulo in 1995. He also spent a year on loan with Atlético MG between 1998-1999.


He becomes the sixth new addition to the Chelsea squad this summer.

Pre-match briefing: Chelsea vs Portsmouth

As we enter our second home game in second place, club historian Rick Glanvill and statistician Paul Dutton are ready for the first Saturday kick-off this season.

The dramatic penalty was part of it. As long as there are synapses in our heads to remember Steven Gerrard's dying swan at Bramall Lane salvaging a draw at the same stage last season, we'll take no lectures from Liverpool about dubious decisions.

Never the less, poached salmon always tastes better than farmed, and several Blues players have talked about the boost they got from a valuable point handed to them on a plate by the referee. The high-pitched whining from the adjacent dressing room only made it taste sweeter.

Of course, when you're not playing well but getting results, there are two ways that can change: either you start playing well and continue collecting points, or you keep playing badly but the wins and draws dry up.

Since valuable squad members have been missing in three games so far, we'd obviously hope it's the more positive scenario that comes about. It's certainly been a far better start for Chelsea than at our chief rivals in recent years, Manchester Utd, who have endured their worst start since the first ever Premier Leeague campaign in 1992/3.

A note of caution, though: that season, against feeble contenders and eventually inspired by Eric Cantona, they recovered to win the league by 10 clear points.

United's next few games until we meet at Old Trafford on 23 September are eminently winnable, starting with troubled Tottenham's visit on Sunday. Remember the immutable law of football: a man who banks on Spurs is eventually going to lose his house.

Chelsea's upcoming fixtures look a little trickier. Villa (on 2 September) held us to a depressing draw at Villa Park in the 2006/7 festive season, leaving us six points behind the leaders. Ever-improving Blackburn will want to test our mettle at the Bridge two weeks later.

As we have become used to, both defences will require lock-picking that has seemed in short supply in the performances to date. Frank Lampard's penalty was our only shot on target last weekend. The loss of key players has meant that the blend is not quite right.

That can change at any time, and this home game after two aways, along with the arrival of a team probably lacking influential figures such as the injured Sol Campbell, could be handy. It won't be easy, and the new spirit of the Shed will be required again.

Keeper David James, already bucked up by talk of him displacing Paul Robinson as England's numero uno, must know the eyes of the nation will be looking for one of famous calamities and will be out to do his best to avoid one. He has regularly been man of the match when facing the Blues.

Still, Harry Redknapp seems to believe his side's problems lie at the other end of the field, and has been linked with former striker Yakubu and Nicolas Anelka. This despite the bright starts for Nigeria international John Utaka and former Preston goalscorer David Nugent.

The newly-capped England man has yet to get off the mark for his new team, but the free-running Utaka has grabbed two in three games - the latest against Bolton like a spear through the mist of Wanderers' midfield and defence. Utaka's goals tend to come in flurries; while at Rennes he scored hat-tricks in successive matches.

Another player having a good season is Richard Hughes, though it has to be said that is founded almost entirely on his impressive ability to prompt a headbutt from Ronaldo and the Portguese being banned for three games as a result.

That win over United showed the veteran Redknapp's capacity still to outwit opponents, cutting supply lines and isolating key opponents. The bell that rings at Fratton Park must have driven the frustrated Carlos Tevez mad that night.

Pompey, though, are yet to register a win on their travels this calendar year, and have an unenviable record against Chelsea. The goal in-form Benjani scored at the Bridge in our 2-1 win last season was their first against us in nine years. Home and away, five of our last seven meetings have ended in a 2-0 win for the Blues. They haven't beaten Chelsea in any competition for nearly 37 years.

Having made history by surpassing Liverpool's 26-year record (of which there was no mention in the Anfield match programme), we are now looking to extend our unbeaten league run at Stamford Bridge to 65 games. We have won 49, drawn 15, scored 134 goals and conceded 31 in that sequence since our defeat against Arsenal in February 2004.

A total of 2,669,552 supporters have witnessed the three-and-a-half year run. Congratulations to the 57 players who have figured in the 64 games - and thanks to the two Southampton players who assisted us with own goals.

Portsmouth are still searching for an away win in 2007. They have drawn five and lost six scoring nine goals and conceding 20 in all competitions since their last win away from Fratton Park against West Ham on Boxing Day.

Chelsea are unbeaten in the last 17 Barclays Premier League games, winning 11 and drawing six since our last defeat at Anfield in January.

Chelsea are looking to extend our unbeaten run against Portsmouth to 23 games. Our last defeat came before any of our current squad were born in December 1960, in the League Cup when a 19-year-old Peter Bonetti was playing his 25th game for the club.

Robben Joins Madrid


Thursday 23rd August 2007 will go down as a sad day in the memories of the Chelsea faithful, as key member of the 2005 title winning side swapped London for Madrid. Yes, Arjen Robben has finally ended months of speculation, and become the Real Madrid number 11, and donned the famous white shirt in front of fans today at the Santiago Bernabeu.


Claudio Ranieri signed Robben in February, but the Dutchman never go to play for Mr. Ranieri due to his departure the following summer. The coo of Robben from under the noses of title rivals Manchester United was seen as a big move for Chelsea, and showed the Premiership and world football that Chelsea were aiming to become a dominant force within England and Europe, with the signings of hot new talent, Robben, and Czech shot-stopper Petr Cech arriving in SW6.


Despite having signed for the blues a good 6 months earlier, Robben was able to pull on the blue shirt of Chelsea for the first time in July 2004, as part of the clubs pre-season tour. Chelsea fans had got a first proper looking at Arjen during that summers European Championships. The former PSV man put in a string of fine performances.


However, after injuries tampered his start to the season, Robben really began to shine in September 2004, with a dazzling debut performance at the Bridge against Blackburn.


It saw the beginning of a great start for Robben, who scored in 4 of his first 5 starts for the Blues, including on his Champions League debut in Moscow.


His first 5 months at the club were undoubtedly his best for Chelsea. Scoring a host of goals, and electrifying defences with his insane pace and trickery on the left hand side. He formed a stunning partnership with Damien Duff, which was key to Chelsea winning the title. However, a second injury plagued the end of the season for Robben, who was never able to achieve full fitness again until the following season.


A second title followed, the following year, but European glory was always beyond Chelsea. In 3 years at the club, Robben has two forgettable Champions League semi-final appearances at Anfield to remember, including the infamous Luis Garcia ‘goal’ and a nail-biting game in May 2007, with Liverpool triumphing on penalties.


Other honours for Robben at Chelsea include two Carling Cups, one F.A. Cup, and a Community Shield medal. Arjen also picked up several personal awards at Chelsea, and incredibly was nominated in Chelsea’s ‘team of the Century’ voting, just 7 months into his Blue’s career.


In 3 seasons, Arjen played 105 times for the Blues, scoring over 30 goals, and making a huge number of assists. On 22nd August 2007, Arjen chose to join Spanish champions, Real Madrid.


Many Chelsea fans will be sad to see the energetic ‘flying Dutchman’ head of to start a new life in the Spanish capital, although will fell the £24.5million price tag warrants a player who hasn’t regularly played for Chelsea in the past 2 years.


In my opinion, Arjen was one of the best talents I have seen for a long time, and looked certain to go on and be one of the worlds best wingers. However, due to his injury problems, I don’t think he’ll ever be what he had the ability to be.


I would like to wish Arjen the best of luck in his new surroundings. Fingers crossed they’ll finish above Barca again this season.

JOSE: WE'RE IN GOOD HEALTH

It's not always the case at the end of an international week but José Mourinho is happy to announce no new injury problems as he approaches the home game against Portsmouth.


'Nobody arrived back injured,' he told Chelsea TV after Friday's final training session.


'There were just small, small things. Ashley Cole was injured so England decided not to play him which gave him a chance to recover. There was just a little knock for Essien, but injured nobody.


'So at the moment the injury situation is just Bridge and Ballack obviously, plus Ricardo [Carvalho]. Nobody else, so we're fine.'


Ashley Cole has recovered from a shoulder injury gained at Anfield while Michael Essien was withdrawn after 77 minutes of Ghana's midweek friendly.


Mourinho has also spoken about the challenge posed by Portsmouth who arrive at the Bridge, like Chelsea, an unbeaten side.


'They have five points and one of them was against a big team. They are doing well. Everything they have is good - manager and players - and they have new signings.


'Last week, even with four or five injured players, they gave an answer against Bolton. This is the kind of the team you know can come here and really believe they can do something.

THE LAST OF THE SUMMER SIGNINGS

José Mourinho has used his introduction of Juliano Belletti to the media to announce there will be no more new players coming in this summer, but there could be one more out.


The Chelsea manager handed over the number 35 shirt to the Brazilian who was signed yesterday and then said:


'First of all, this new player gives me what I need which is a closed door in my dressing room. That is very important for me.


'The market is open until August 31st but not for us. We have the new signings we fought for and we have the balance in the squad.'


However Mourinho explained that it is only the entrance door to the dressing room and not the exit that is now locked.

'That is open for one player out. I want my squad to be just a little bit smaller. We have 27 players because Belletti comes in but Robben goes out, and if we can, we will go down to 26.


'Our squad is a very balanced one. We have two players for each position and the right-back position is a position where we have more than two.


'For the interest of the players, because everyone likes to play and not just be part of the squad, if clubs show a real interest in one of our players and our player shows interest in leaving for a better situation, that is okay.


'But it is not a drama for me to keep 27 because they are all good players, they are useful and the season is long.'


Mourinho had words of support for one of his existing right-backs.


'Paulo [Ferreira] is a player that I trust very much. Paulo is with me for six consecutive years and everything that I have won, he has won with me.


'From the defensive point of view he is a safe player. The reason why I wanted to bring in a different right-back is Chelsea this season is a different team, as everyone can feel.


'There is a different philosophy of playing so I felt I needed something different on the right, but no doubts, Paulo is a player that I love and I trust.'


Mourinho moved on to discuss why Belletti was his eventual choice as a 'different' type of full-back.


'He brings what we believe we need, a pure right-back, not an adaptation anymore like we did so many times with Diarra, Essien and Wright-Phillips in that position.


'So we have an attacking right-back and not an ordinary one. He has played in two of the biggest teams in the world - the Brazil national team and for Barcelona. In Brazil he was world champion and in Barcelona he was not just Spanish champion but also European champion.'


The 31-year-old featured in Brazil's semi-final win over Turkey in the 2002 World Cup as well as making his famous scoring contribution to the Champions League Final of 2006.


'Belletti has experience of playing in big teams so he is not scared to play at Chelsea,' Mourinho said, adding that the player is definitely one of a squad of 16 players for Saturday's game.


'Was he the first option or the second option?' the boss asked, pre-empting a likely press question.


'For me the point is always the same, the best player is always the best relation between quality and price. Belletti is a very good player and the relation between his quality and the price makes him the best.'


The player himself returned the compliments, explaining how much confidence it gave him to be selected by a manager so often in opposition when Belletti was at Barcelona.


'Everybody knows Mr. Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world. When he goes for a player, he knows what he wants and he goes for quality. I am sure Chelsea will only be successful under his direction.'


The new arrival also expressed an ambition to add to his Champions League winners' medal collection with his new club.


'When you play for a team like Chelsea, you always go into games thinking about winning. The philosophy is to win every competition we are in so I hope we can win that one. Why not?'

MOURINHO ON BIG MATCH COUNTDOWN

Talking to Chelsea TV, José Mourinho has been speaking about the new players' fitness ahead of the Portsmouth game on Saturday.


He said: 'Alex was a problem because when he finished the American Cup, he had one month's holiday and when he was trying to come to England he had that little problem. He then had to come back so his holiday was weak so when he arrived he was not ready. He worked very hard and last week I felt he could go to Liverpool and play a part of the game.


'Belletti is different because he did the whole pre-season with Barcelona and he played friendly matches with Barcelona. Before yesterday he played a game with Barcelona, so Belletti is fit and is ready.'


The manager was also pleased that the international players coming back to fitness were able to get some minutes on the field during the week.


'Yes they got time in the national teams and the way we work here, the high intensity brings them up quick. I think everyone is getting there.


'Of course at this moment we don't need big rotations because it is the beginning of the season and they want to play every game to get their sharpness, but next month we start with the Champions League and Carling Cup. I hope at that moment we play seven or eight matches a month and we have the group like we have at this moment with almost everybody available.'

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is hopeful that captain Sol Campbell and full back Lauren will be fit enough to return to his side for the clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.


The pair face late fitness tests along with Noe Pamarot, but Redknapp will definitely be without the services of Nico Kranjcar, Gary O'Neil, Pedro Mendes and Linvoy Primus.


Michael Essien's international team mate Sulley Muntari returns after a one-match ban following his red card.


Redknapp believes his side will have to defend resolutely when they visit tomorrow afternoon.


He told the official Portsmouth website: 'If people think you can go there, open up and attack them, then they're talking nonsense. They don't understand football.


'You've got to be solid and tight. You've got to go there first and foremost and make sure you're in the game before you're out of the game.

Chelsea fan and Pompey midfielder Sean Davis thinks we will win the Barclays Premier League this season, but insists first of all he must take three points back to Fratton Park.

BELLETTI NO STRANGER TO THE BLUES

Latest signing Juliano Belletti has been introducing himself ahead of today's game against Portsmouth, and admits he doesn't know too much about the opposition.


It has been a quick transition for the defender to cope with. He only learned of our interest on Tuesday afternoon, and by Friday morning he was taking part in his first training session, before being unveiled to the media in the afternoon, ensuring he hasn't had much time to study Pompey.


'Since the season started I have been watching the English games, and last week I watched Chelsea at Liverpool, but didn't have a chance to watch Portsmouth but I'm sure [José] Mourinho will tell me everything there is to know and I'm sure it is going to be fine,' he said.


Until now, the World Cup winner was best known to English fans as the man who scored Barcelona's winner in the Champions League final in 2006, and today he could come face to face with another goalscorer from that game, Sol Campbell, but insists his mind will be on the task in front of him.
