on paper, so far the undefeated record looks impressive but a reality check would show that most of the time Liverpool struggled to draw...well granted those other matches against small teams like Portsmouth and Birmingham which was actually points gifted away to the other team...

Re: Liverpool Fc Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

Like i mentioned in the other thread...there is so much flow in Arsenal's attacking football.Their counter attack caught the red;s back 4off guard most of the time.I thought Crouch was playing better than the other three strikers yesterday.

Re: Liverpool Fc Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

Liverpool have been dealt a blow with the news that Fernando Torres has been ruled out of action for three weeks with an adductor injury.
A Liverpool spokesman said: "A scan this morning has shown a tear to a different adductor muscle to his original injury and we expect Fernando to be out for about three weeks.

"As for Xabi Alonso, an x-ray showed a fracture to the fourth metatarsal in his left foot.Xabi will be seen by a consultant tomorrow after which we will have a much better idea of the timescales involved.
"With regards to Javier Mascherano, he had an x-ray which has showed no bone injury, but he will receive intensive treatment on extensive bruising in his foot."

Time for Leiva & Bable to step up .. & Crouchie ?

Re: Liverpool Fc Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

Liverpool 2-1 Cardiff
Gerrard gets vital goal again

Robbie Fowler received a bear-hug from Rafael Benitez and a standing ovation from the Kop but he could do little to stop Steven Gerrard driving Liverpool into the Carling Cup quarter-finals in a 2-1 win.

There was to be no magic homecoming for 32-year-old Fowler, a legend at Anfield after blasting 183 goals in a tremendous 369-game Liverpool career.

Cardiff did all they could. They battled bard, forced an equaliser through skipper Darren Purse and were pounding away at Liverpool to the death.

But Gerrard was the difference, with a typical surging run and shot producing the winner after Purse had levelled following a long-range goal from reserve midfielder Nabil El Zhar.

Liverpool started this tie with only Gerrard and Jamie Carragher from the side who kicked off against Arsenal at the weekend.

Teenager Jack Hobbs made his full debut at centre-back, with youngsters Lucas and Sebastian Leto getting run-outs.

Harry Kewell was on the bench, his first involvement with the senior side since last season's Champions League Final.

Fowler's name echoed around the stadium before the start, and four minutes into the match he had a great chance to score.

Fabio Aurelio tripped the former England striker just outside the box in front of the Kop - and Fowler sent a curling free-kick towards the top corner. But French goalkeeper Charles Itandje flung himself to his left to claw it away.

Liverpool responded with efforts from Ryan Babel and Peter Crouch, before Aurelio produced a bending drive which Michael Oakes saw late but managed to turn around a post.

Cardiff, roared on by more than 6,000 fans at the Anfield Road end, held their own and defended well while trying to get Joe Ledley and Paul Parry into dangerous positions on the flanks.

Lucas should have done better with a six-yard line header from Alvaro Arbeloa's cross, before another smart save from Itandje denied Parry a headed goal from Tony Capaldi's 38th-minute cross.

Liverpool sprung into life when Gerrard, Babel and Crouch combined to set-up Leto, but his edge-of-the-box drive flashed wide.

After some probing from Gerrard and Babel, the hosts got their noses in front from an unlikely source.

No Cardiff player moved towards French-born midfielder El Zhar when he picked the ball up 25 yards out, so he unleashed a fierce, swerving effort which flew past Oakes.

Cardiff needed to get their veteran strikers into action, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took a Fowler pass on the left before lifting a cross-shot fractionally over the bar with Itandje struggling.

Ledley took the ball into the box and found space with a clever change of feet, before seeing a low drive turned away by Itandje in the 62nd minute.

Yossi Benayoun replaced Leto a minute later - but two minutes later Cardiff were level.

Parry swung in a bending free-kick from the right and Purse rose to plant a strong downward header from 12 yards past Itandje's left hand.

Cardiff's hordes were in dreamland, but the lead lasted just 46 seconds.

Benayoun raced through on the left and laid the ball into Gerrard's path, and he drilled the ball home from 15 yards.

Kewell came on for El Zhar with 20 minutes to go, to a rousing welcome from the Kop - and Cardiff responded by sending on Steven Thompson for the tiring Hasselbaink.

Liverpool were on top and Crouch forced Oakes into a good save with a close-range header following Babel's cross.

Fowler found a yard in the box to turn Carragher and force Itandje into a reflex save.

Parry had done well on the right, growing in confidence, and Lucas was booked for bringing the winger down a foot outside the box.

With six minutes left, teenager Chris Gunter came on for McNaughton, before Parry saw a 10-yard drive blocked by Aurelio.

Babel was booked for encroaching at a free-kick as Cardiff threw men forward, but they could not force extra-time.. -soccernet

NABIL: MY KOP DREAM
Jimmy Rice 01 November 2007

Nabil El Zhar is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite realising a long-time dream by scoring in front of the Kop.

The 21-year-old knows he has a lot of hard work ahead if he's going to get the opportunity to score more wondergoals like his opener against Cardiff.

"It has been a big dream to score in front of the Kop and now I am living that dream," said the Moroccan. "I don't know if I've scored better than that and I hope it is the first of many in a Liverpool shirt.

"I don't have the words to describe the feeling when I scored – it was simply amazing. It happened so quickly.

"You have to forget about the big names you're playing with and try to show people what you can do. I hope I did that.

"But I now have to try to keep this level. Now I've just got to get up in the morning, go to training and continue working hard. I scored but I've got more work to do to play in this team.

"I have to keep my feet on the ground. All I've done is score – I haven't done anything in this team yet."

Wednesday's Carling Cup tie was El Zhar's first senior start of the season, adding to the three appearances he'd already notched up since joining in October 2006.

With the likes of Jermaine Pennant, Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Harry Kewell and Sebastian Leto battling it out for places on the wings, he knows he may have to be patient for his next chance.

He added: "I think I'm better on the right wing because I'm right footed, but I also feel okay on the left and up front. I would play as a defender at the moment if it meant I played!

"I have to work hard and improve – and you can only improve when you play with the kind of players I did against Cardiff.

"I've just got to work hard for the reserves and try to prove to the boss that I'm ready to play some games this season.

"He said I will play some games if I work hard and prove what I can do."

JACK: I KOPPED IT FROM CARRA
Jimmy Rice 01 November 2007

Jack Hobbs has thanked Jamie Carragher for helping him through his full debut on Wednesday night – even though the former England man left him with earache!
The 19-year-old revealed Carra was "on at him" throughout the 90 minutes against Cardiff, not that he's complaining.

Hobbs told Liverpoolfc.tv: "He kept on at me all night, which is really good. He dragged me into positions and guided me, which obviously makes life a lot easier on your debut.

"I might have a little bit of earache but it's all good."

As well as a headache, Hobbs ended his big day with a broken nose, though he was back in training today after having it reset.

Despite the pain, the youngster was understandably buzzing after his first appearance in front of a packed Kop.

"It felt amazing but really surreal," he revealed. "Especially in the second half when I could see the whole of the Kop. That was really special.

"I had a couple of glimpses up there and it was like nothing I've ever experienced.

"To be marking Robbie and Jimmy Floyd as well – they are two of the biggest names in the game. I really enjoyed it.

"It's quality to be playing against Robbie Fowler at Anfield. Some of the lads still call him God, and it's definitely something I'll never forget.

"He said 'Alright Jacko' at the start of the game.

"I think I did alright against him, though I missed a couple of headers that I should have got. But we won 2-1 and got through to the next round, so happy days."

Hobbs – who captains the reserves – hopes he can now start pushing Carra, Sami Hyypia and Daniel Agger for a first-team place.

He added: "That's the first one done but now I want to push on and get more.

"I know I'll have to be patient. Rafa has an idea of using his whole squad and you might get a chance when players need resting, like Hyypia here.

"I've just got to work and train really hard, but I do feel ready for top-flight action. This was a big test because it was my first competitive game for any senior side, and I'm not going to come up against a more experienced strikeforce than Robbie and Jimmy Floyd.

"I'm quietly confident in myself but I still want to try and get better every day.

"I really hope this could be the start for me at Liverpool. Playing in front of that crowd every other week would be amazing."

SAMI: JACK'S THE LAD
Jimmy Rice 01 November 2007

Veteran defender Sami Hyypia has revealed he can see something of himself in rookie centre-back Jack Hobbs.

The big Finn was impressed with the 19-year-old's performance against Cardiff in his first senior start for the club on Wednesday night.

Hyypia believes it will be the first of many.

"It was a very good start for Jack," said the 34-year-old. "His performance was very solid and hopefully he will have many more games to come.

"He is still young and he has a lot to learn but he is willing to learn and to listen to what people say to him.

"Sometimes he looks to the likes of Jamie Carragher or myself for advice and, of course, we are more than happy to help.

"I can see a lot of myself in him. I think he has similar qualities to me but I think he is better than I was when I was 19.

"Hopefully, his improvement will continue and he will keep on getting better and be a player for the future of this club."

One of the standout features of Hobbs' display was his ability to start play from the back.

Hyypia joked: "It was also good to see that he has the confidence to bring the ball out of defence because maybe he is better to do that than me now!"

Re: Liverpool Fc Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was left frustrated at the end of his side's 0-0 draw with Blackburn after they missed a host of chances to snatch all three points.
Brad Friedel twice saved well from Steven Gerrard and David Bentley cleared a Peter Crouch header off the line. And as the Reds turned the screw, Dirk Kuyt missed a number of good chances at the end.

"We are very disappointed not to have won the game," said Benitez. "We knew before the game that Blackburn would be tough opponents because they have been playing well and scoring goals.

"After the game we could easily have won this match because we created very clear chances, but we didn't take them.
We took 9 points from beating Chelski,Spurs & Gunners at home last time out,we really need a turn around the corner, badly.
"The positive things to take into the Besiktas game on Tuesday is if we create the chances we did today then we will score against them.

"We still have one game in hand on most of the teams above us in the table and in the last four games we have been playing better. If we weren't creating the chances we are at the moment then it would be a problem.

"I have confidence we will start scoring goals soon."

The manager also had words of support for Kuyt after he spurned a number of openings.

"He is a fantastic worker and he gives a lot to this team. At least he's getting in the positions to score."

Gerard Houllier often quoted those lines whenever the fans & media pointed the finger at Heskey or the strike force, and we all know where they ended subsequently.
We took 9 points from beating Chelski,Spurs & Gunners at home last season,we almost need a miracle to make up those grounds now.

Why live in the shadow of GH?

I was pleased with the performance but disappointed with the result (can't seem to beat Blackburn which I think is due to the number of ex-Pool players they have!). I am optimistic about our ability. The report on ESPNsoccernet, for instance, is pure piss.

No,I haven't lost faith,I always watch every single match thinking that we will win. Just a bit pissed off at Rafa for giving Kuyt so many games in order to let him get back his form,we badly need a scorer, not a workhorse.
