Not sure about SR but I always recommend Luxe Hotel on St 136, right in the middle of the main bar street. Lots of other bars at nearby streets as well. Unless you're going out of PP, there's really no necessity to hire a driver, lots of tul-tuks, taxis about, and besides, PP is quite a small place.

Re: Khmer Diary
Bros planning to come to PP next week, it would be advisable to postpone or seek another destination. The grapevine is reporting there's going too be trouble.
The elections results are being disputed by the opposition and things could turn ugly when the oppo leader returns to PP on the 20th Aug. Just so you know.

Re: Khmer Diary
Thanks bro.
My feel is that there will be a blowout. The military has been brought in from the provinces and are manning all the main arterial roads to PP. Some local police in PP has been disarmed for fear of them joining the protesters. It is common knowledge many civil servants are oppo sympathisers. History have shown the situation can change to the ugly on a dime. I am not too concerned about the authorities but many, the criminals, the young and discontented, can take advantage of the situation to rob and loot etc. So be real careful. On the other hand, if the above does really happen, and I hope it doesn't, it's a rare opportunity to see history in the making, something you can tell your grandchildren.

Re: Khmer Diary
All seems quiet. The rallies has come and gone without much incidents. A bomb or 2 has gone off without injuries but other than that, everything seems A-OK.
It seems the incumbent and the oppo has make a 'deal', according to the grapevine, and its business as usual. So come enjoy the hospitality of the Kingdom of Wonders.

Re: Khmer Diary
Sometime last week during lunch at a noodle restaurant along Sisowath Quay, i.e. the Riverside, we were talking to the chef about snakes and how the Chinese in Guangzhou eats them. Then my friend asked the chef whether he could procure some. A few phone calls later, an order for 2 kgs of snake was confirmed. My friend wrote the snake stew recipe down and the menu for the meal for 4 days later.
It turned out the snake was a cobra. It was sliced thinly, sans bones and stewed with Yunnan ham, whole chicken, fried eggs thinly cut and a number of other herbs. Taste like sharkfins soup, especially when we added some vinegar and whiskey. Delicious.

Relatively peaceful but locals told me that the banks had stopped lending while waiting for the political situation to improve. The same goes with the local businesses..everything is slow. Will try to meet up with Bro Faidenk in next trip scheduled for Nov. Was quite happy with the lack of traffic policemen covering the major roads. I was driving around without license throughout my stay |
