To a limited extend, I agreed that it does not make any great difference who runs our land as long as that chosen party is capable to extend and continue to safeguard our national interest being the RICHEST country in ASEAN. Yes, our country is often an easy target to be scolded and scapegoated by other neighbours, and with a population of just slightly over four million in a 683-square kilometer city state, it is exactly like a red dot..... However, while we are incomparable in size with our neighbours, it is also incomparable in terms of prosperity. We are a sovereign country and mutual interest$$ can be achieved without sacrificing a foot of our limited land area. There is absoutely nothing that $$$ CANNOT BUY in politics, especially with our across the strait neighbour. Beside, we have many powerful distant buddies as well.

No parties safeguard national interests. Politicians only care for their own interests. At the first sign of trouble, they'd be out of there in a flash. Why else do you think they all have assets and bases overseas.

Singapore is a lot more Western than New Zealand will ever be.

NZ also has a superior Chinese culture. The children of many Singapore immigrants to NZ speak much better mandarin after a couple of years in the country because they learn the language from the mainland Chinese or Taiwanese. In Singapore, the Mandarin they learnt was of the half baked Singapore variety with a really weird accent.

Sorry to threadjack TS, but Boss Sam, sometimes this little shit hole is the only shit hole we call home. For me, I lived and worked in many places, from Aus to Japan to US and even some neighbouring countries... Every country has its own beauty, but they also have their own bad points. It is just like a marriage, you can't find the perhaps guy or gal. So for me, I guess this little shithole is the place I am most comfortable with, not because I gave my sweat and blood doing 2 and half yrs of NS or that my family is here. I can choose to leave and bring them along. But instead of getting shitty treatment from others, instead of being down trodden by others, I guess I just decided to come back and get shat upon here... heee heee... Hey for those who have lived and gone overseas, some feel that no matter how shitty this little red dot is, it is their shitty little red dot. My wife is Japanese and so is my daughter and they are ok moving here.

If your forefathers had the harbored the same attitude, you wouldn't be where you are today.

Humans have progressed because there are some who are willing to move beyond their comfort zone in search of a better life. Those who put up with the status quo are invariably left behind.

Singapore may hold fond memories but unfortunately, it's situated in a very bad neighborhood and the long term viability of the country is in serious doubt. People blindly put their faith in the govt for salvation but there is only so much anyone can do for an Island state that cannot survive in the long term.

My advice is to cash out now while the going is good and get a head start in moving on to better things. By the time the mass exodus starts, it's too late.

I learnt my lessons in life by dabbling in the stock market. I used to buy what everyone was buying and selling when everyone was trying to unload their stock. I lost money of course.

I then realised that the best time to buy was when the stock market crashed big time as quality stocks would go for a huge discount. I then sold when the Aunties and Uncles entered the market in the middle of a bull run. This formula has never failed me.

Get out of Singapore while you still have time. By the time things turn to custard, it will be far too late.

Whether we like it or not, we live, eat and breathe the air of our small country, and for most, the country of our birth. However much as we feel aggreived by the policies and/or politics here (if any), the fact remains that this is our home and our little refuge from the atrocities of the other parts of world at large.

Imagine earthquakes, tidal waves and terrorists attacks. I am thankful that these things never/seldom rear its ugly head here. Sure, I may well bitch about, for example, the costs of living here but hey, I do by the same token appreciate whats on the other side of the coin, namely the stability, the low crime rates, the cleanliness and the orderliness that underlines our society and country.

The point is this, no country is perfect and there is no such place you can live in that is a utopia. As with mostly everything else, one must take the good with the bad. For me the good outweighs the bad, so I do not harbour thoughts of emigration to some other country.

In any event, better the devil you know than the devil you don't. I end with this saying for one and all to ponder over : "the grass is always greener on the other side".

Coming back to the subject of your thread TS, may I suggest that you bite the bullet for now and simply concentrate all your efforts into building up your financial resourses for your yourself and your future family. You may well be upset over the sarcastic remarks directed at you by your gf's parents but do try to brush it off and move on with what's of more importantance, which is to stick with your plan to work hard and save up for the future. Do remember this whenever you feel belittled by your gf's parents, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"
