IMHO, just like good wine, I am of the opinion that he's really getting better & better as he aged ... so much so that I think he deserved getting recalled to the England squad.
For this match in HK ... if he hadn't been so alert to come off his lines & covered his angles, it would easily have been 2-0 to LFC in regulation time - one goal each from Torres & Kuyt.

Well there is selfish and there is selfish. Was there a case where he shot when he could have passed? I actually wish he was more selfish at times and stay in the box more. If anything, I thought he was wasteful against Pompey, his touch was a tad heavy again.

What has Liverpool got to do with you? Were you born in Liverpool? Do you have relatives born in Liverpool? Have you lived in Liverpool? Do you work for a company with an HQ in Liverpool?

It just amazes me why people support teams which they have no association with whatsoever.

My favourite sport is motor racing but I don't care who wins as long as they give good entertainment along the way. The reason why I don't care is because I have no stake in any of the teams, none of the drivers is related to me, none of the car designers is known to me and none of team owners care two hoots about me. They don't even know I exist.

But there is an association, boss, it's an emotional one and very powerful. In fact when governments, principals and company directors try to create something like that among their people, they are often far less successful. So the bond albeit mysterious is like the light that illuminates us.

i have met with skeptics like boss sam before when i was younger, which is the reason why i dont dare to call liverpool my team. cos he is right to say that only the guys living in liverpool can say, "my team".

but supporting it is another matter. it is a kind of branding and emotionally, it is a form of identification. liverpool represents something, like character and being aboveboard. i dont deny that i supported it during its heydays but i have also stuck by them during the barren years. it is what we identify with our own character or what we hope to be:- to still be humble when pool was winning everything and not to give up even when the chips r down. we identified with that and that is what we believe in, period.

we follow the ups and downs, choosing to go along with their fortunes simply bcos we have invested emotionally on pool, that's all. of course, u might not see the point why we chose to support something as frivolous but that is just us displaying our human nature of being loyal, even though pool arent doing as well as we would love to.

of course, there r people who switched to supporting only the winning teams but that is due to the fact that they identify with their own set of values, mainly due to that they couldnt stand losing... for whatever reasons, i know not.

just like when u quote racing, i only support 1 team all my life - mclaren ever since the day i laid eyes on ayrton senna winning despite having an inferior car. he won mainly he was willing to put his life on the line to defend his own honour... it was a sad time for me when he finally pushed his luck too far. but with the change to partner mercedes, it was even more reason for me to continue the support as being poor when young, the mercedes was the ultimate status symbol for my whole family.

when i finally made some money, i bought the SLK. of course, i have since sold it and settled for something more subtle. but these guys keep giving me new reasons to support them (even though they didnt need to, actually), like their relentless research on better fuel consumption, etc... my point being, it is just our emotional identification. to u, it might be frivolous. to us, it is more important than life and death.

its true that the racing driver, the soccer star, the basketball wizard, the tennis champion or the ping pong master, wont give a shit if we lost our jobs or we dont have money for beer, it doesnt matter becos we just support their play, not their livelihood.

you can love a sport with passion. or you can just watch the game and be amused. just like bonking, you can bonk with passion or you can bonk like a dead fish.
