Indonesia's president says economy strong despite slide in rupiah

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Wednesday said Indonesia's economic fundamentals are strong despite a slide in its rupiah currency, and urged people not to panic.

Yudhoyono said he had ordered ministers to "take necessary measures'' to halt the descent of the rupiah, which touched a three-year low of 9,810 against the dollar on Tuesday.

Last week, the national currency was trading at 9,670 against the greenback.

"The president hopes that people remain calm because the country's financial situation, including the country's foreign exchange reserves, are strong and the economy is growing well,'' Yudhoyono said in a statement.

"Currency fluctuations are normal in a floating system.''

Memories remain strong in Indonesia of the 1998 rupiah collapse, which led to massive price increases and nationwide riots that led to the downfall of then-dictator Gen. Suharto.

The dollar has been rising steadily against the rupiah over the past week amid concerns about high oil prices.

Although Indonesia is rich in natural resources, the country - Asia's only member of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries - has been declared a net importer of oil because of its poor refining capabilities.

On Tuesday, Bank Indonesia Gov. Burhanuddin Abdullah said the bank would raise its benchmark interest rate by 15 to 20 basis points to help boost the rupiah.

The rate now stands at 7.7 percent.

Higher interest rates usually help a currency because they make assets denominated in that currency more attractive to investors. - AP

Really miss those days when I went to batam casino to try my luck. With full ferry refund and good commission earn from rolling girls and counter,I feel so sian when the govt. close it. That day I went to Leisure world cruise to try my luck and manage to win a little. This is my virgin trip to leisure world. Of cuz I was a bit blur and ask abt rolling things..Counter told me I can get $15 rebate if I buy $1k nett chip if not no rebate. I decided to buy as the ferry ticket cost me $41!
