Nope, didn't go back as I have a few guests here for the New Year and also busy with the setting up of a new company. Will probably go back in Feb or maybe March. Miss my son so much.

Oh yes, sure to miss family members back home as this is the time usually we can get a break to find time for family. But now a days, work and business is so demanding and there is no time for holidays or break. I am also going back around 2nd week of Feb and coming back around late Feb or early March.

That is great, a new business for the dragon year and wish you success and sang yee heng loong.....

I wanted to work this evening to finish a project but godammed it, the built-in power saver cuts off all power at 6.45 pm just as it was dark. My battery is all but fucked and could only last 30 minutes. I should have followed my instinct and gone to the Pickled Parrot for the weekly pool com. 2 bucks to win $50, it doesn’t matter if I’ve only won it maybe 6 times last year and once this; it’s great fun.

Toul Kok, as anyone who lives in Phnom Penh will tell you, is the district where the rich and famous live. I live on the other side of the track, where all the poor cousins live, or used to. Phnom Penh is expanding at a tremendous pace, and where once Toul Kok was a place renowned for the $5 whores, there are now condos side by side with typical 3 storey apartments. Oh yes, some of the whores still ply their wares near where the rail track crosses the road, its heydays are long gone. In some parts, the garment sweatshops are still there, cottage industry with some tin-roofed shacks and a few sewing machines sub-contracting jobs from the garment factories, 3000 riel (USD0.75) barber shops, 3000 riel plate of rice with some veggie and a piece of fish or meat.

The area is alive with new constructions, and therein lies the problem with the residents, and us. Every time electrical works need to be done, the authorities shut off the power, and it lasts for 2 maybe 3, sometimes 4, the worst we had was 5 hours, most times once daily, and frequently twice. And it looks like the development in the area is not going to abate anytime soon.

Anyway, in the dark and swatting like already 30 mozzies with my newly bought electronic swatter,my phone rang. Paul, the only person I knew in Phnom Penh when I first arrived in PP, was on the line and asked would you join me for a drink at a beer garden near the transmission tower in Toul Kok? Anything at the time beats swatting mozzies and I said give me a minute and sent your driver to pick me up. I had a quick shower by candlelight and 15 minutes later I was downing my cold, cold beer diluted with ABC stout and 2 huge cubes of ice. Paul signaled to the mamas an and mentioned a srey sa’at for me. A srey is a female and sa’at is nice, beautiful, good, whatever the context of the situation is.

And this dark haired, with beautiful dark features appeared and sat next to me. How are you, I am Aya in perfect English and without waiting for my response said, I’m very drunk so you don’t mind if I don’t drink too much. Sure, I said, and she said, thank you and clinked my glass and said, Or, which in Khmer is all. So much for the I’m drunk business and we got on quite fine.

Paul said, she looks delicious and why don’t you bring her home? Yes, she’s beautiful but my mother told me never to bring any girl who drinks home. We were maybe there an hour and Paul asked for the check so I reckoned it must be time to go home.

The business in that beer garden this evening was booming, every table taken. And every time I looked, the girls walking around seem beautiful, and the food seems above average, especially the plate of fat oysters, served with some kind of herbs I’ve never tasted before. I had 2 with a quick squeeze of lime and a small swap of wasabi which went down real smooth down the throat and gave me a nose freeze.

Well, since it’s almost walking distance from my house I reckon I’ll gave it another visit some time soon.

Is there a point to this post? Well, you seen another side of Cambodia seldom reported, the mundane life of the Cambodian ‘middle class’. I wished I had my trusty Fuji camera with me to accompany this post, but I don’t, so you just have to picture it in your mind.
