Da Nang announces 2-month int’l fireworks festival

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/06/2016 13:55 GMT + 7

The 2017 Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF 2017) will run for two months from next April, the municipal administration announced at a press conference on Monday.

The festival is the continuation of the Da Nang International Fireworks Competition held in the city since 2008, said Huynh Van Hung, director of the Da Nang Department of Sports and Culture.

Eight teams from the UK, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, China, and Vietnam will take part in the eight-week festival, which will run from April 29 to June 24, 2017, Hung said.

Local property developer Sun Group will take over the festival’s organization starting next year, Hung added.

According to DIFF 2017 organizers, fireworks displays will be organized every Saturday night during the course of the festival, and there will be complementary events to entertain visitors throughout the week.

These events include Cham Culture Festivals (Wednesdays), Street Festivals (Fridays), Beer Festivals (every day), International Cuisine Festivals (every day), and Sculpture Festivals.

Last year, the event ran for two days and was competed for by teams from Australia, Poland, South Africa, the U.S., and Vietnam

Expat suggests methods to combat public littering in Vietnam

DONG NGUYEN/TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 12/05/2016 16:54 GMT + 7

Editor's note: A Singaporean expat has shared his thoughts with Tuoi Tre News on what Vietnam should do to combat people’s bad habit of throwing trash and urinating on the street.

Dr. Ong Kian Soon’s opinions follow a decision by Vietnamese officials to crack down on public urination and littering.

Those urinating in public will be fined between VND1 million (US$44) and VND3 million ($131), a new rule that will take effect on February 1 says.

People caught littering cigarette butts in public will also be fined from VND500,000 ($22) to VND1 million, according to the new rule.

Anyone dumping garbage on sidewalks, roadways and into local drainage systems will be fined from VND5 million ($220) to VND7 million ($308) which is much much higher than the current fine, which is approximately VND400,000 ($17.5).

Fine is good, but not enough

I’ve travelled to Vietnam many times over the past 10 years, so it’s inevitable that I have seen people littering or relieving themselves in public.

These new regulations are a good start. I am glad that the awareness of the importance of a clean environment is improving and official regulations are a good sign that Vietnam is serious about keeping the environment clean.

Of course when you implement these types of regulations, there will be plenty of doubts and many people may say that such regulations to try and change people's behavior are ridiculous, or will never work.

What Vietnam is facing right now is not unusual. Singapore was in the same situation 20-30 years ago. I remember many years ago when I was growing up in Singapore, there were many "Keep the city clean" campaigns and initially, there was a lot of resistance and many people also thought that such campaigns would never work.

However, in spite of objections to such regulations punishing people who dirty the environment, the government persisted and finally people started getting the idea that it’s bad to spoil the environment.

At one time, Singapore was jokingly called a "Fine" city because there were posters everywhere showing how much you need to pay in fines if you dirtied the environment, e.g. littering in the park, spitting on the ground or passing urine in the lifts, etc.

In Singapore, most people live in government-subsidized housing called HDB (Housing and Development Board) apartments, and sensors to detect urine are installed in all HDB lifts to catch people who urinate there. If these sensors are triggered, the lift door will not open and the police will arrest the perpetuator. If I remember correctly, the fine is $500 dollars.

In Singapore, when a person attracts a fine, police officers will actually take down the person's details and the person will have to pay the fine at the relevant government office. If the fine is not paid, he/she can be taken to court and even be jailed if the person repeatedly refuses to pay the fine.

So, I do think that such regulations are feasible in Vietnam, but the government needs to persist and more importantly implement the fines across the board to anyone and everyone who violates the rules, without fear or favor, so that people respect them.

Can Tho to Launch Public Bike-Sharing Scheme

Published on Monday, 05 December 2016 13:00 Written by Saigoneer.

Can Tho’s urbanites may soon be able to bike around the city thanks to a new public bike-sharing scheme.

In a recent interview with Phap Luat, Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Transportation Le Tien Dung shared that if things go smoothly, the metropolis will have 10 bike-sharing stations by 2020.

“Specifically, seven stations will be placed within Ninh Kieu District while Cai Rang, Binh Thuy and Phong Dien Districts will each have one,” Dung told the news source.

The public transport plan will be rolled out in a few phases. At the moment, municipal authorities will focus on outfitting Ninh Kieu District with the necessary infrastructure at Luu Huu Phuoc Park, the vicinity of Can Tho Market, the Muong Thanh roundabout and Song Hau Park.

The public bike program will feature automatic payment machines to allow riders to pick up and deposit bikes at any station. Moreover, bicycles will be monitored by GPS trackers. Dung also added that the government will provide the public sites for the stations, but private companies will take care of the daily operations and equipment.

This is not the first time a city in Vietnam has mentioned a public bike-sharing system. In 2014, the Ministry of Transport put forth a proposal to pilot a similar scheme in five local cities. However, there haven't been any updates on whether anything actually came of the plan.

Grab Reports Over 60 Drivers Assaulted by Traditional Xe Ôms

Published on Monday, 05 December 2016 10:23 Written by Saigoneer.

n a sign of just how cut-throat competition in the xe ôm industry has become, several dozen GrabBike drivers in Saigon have reported being attacked by their conventional counterparts in recent months.

Tuoi Tre reports that Grab Vietnam, the local affiliate of the Singaporean ride-hailing service, has contacted local police regarding 65 assaults on Grab drivers by xe ôm drivers this year.

Many of these attacks – 18, to be exact – took place at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, while 15 more occurred at Hoc Mon District's An Suong Bus Station. Others were carried out around Cong Quynh and Pham Ngu Lao Streets, along with Le Hong Phong Street in District 5.

Grab officials believe traditional xe ôm have lashed out at Grab drivers as a result of business; the latter group now gets more customers thanks to cheap fares and a convenient app interface. There are over 20,000 app-based xe ôm in Saigon, according to Tuoi Tre, mainly working for Grab and Uber.

While some have resorted to violence in response to this increased competition, other traditional drivers have established groups and unions in order to improve their professionalism and service. Still, Saigon's old-school xe ôm drivers face an uncertain future, as their earnings have dropped significantly since Grab and Uber came on the scene.

In an earlier story, Tuoi Tre quoted Minh, a 62-year-old xe ôm in Binh Thanh District, who said that he earned over VND100,000 per day before ride-hailing apps arrived. "Now with these new apps, I've only gathered VND10,000 this entire morning," he shared with the news source.

Grab has asked local authorities to monitor the situation moving forward.

Vietnam's delivery men: Oh the things you can carry

By VnExpress December 6, 2016 | 01:30 pm GMT+7

Where there's a will (and a motorcycle), there's a way.

Delivery drivers in Vietnam have never ceased to astonish us with their driving skills.

Here are some of exhibits to prove that these drivers will put anything on their vehicles -- shocking images that may only be found on Vietnamese streets.

According to Vietnamese laws, motorcycles are not allowed to carry heavy products around and violators can be fined between VND200,000 and VND400,000 ($8.8-17.2).

But for many people, motorbikes remain a major means for delivering goods. And for many delivery men, this is how they make a living.

In short, just don’t try these. Especially the scooter-ception.

Almost everybody was like you, they dismissed the polls as being biased when the results turned otherwise, but then the analysts start to look back at all the previous presidential campaigns and realised the same organisations (not individuals) did the same polls and was more or less very near when it came to the final tally regardless of whether they are Republicans or Democrats in fact for the very last 5 presidential elections practically each party took turns to be president, only this year was a total surprise to everyone when the polls was totally opposite

That clown have either passed nonsensical comments or blasted almost everyone else so it is just a matter of who is next

Actually if he have been an expat to Wetnam for 10 years as claimed, he would know that his comparison between using fines in Sinkie & Wetnam is lopsided, he is forgetting that fines in Sinkie really goes into the Garment's coffers while fines in Wetnam often goes into private individual pockets

That is becos it takes at least 5 to 10 years for any official plan to be implemented in Wetnam after it have been floated
