Normally. Malaysian Govt contracts are 'jacked-up' many, many times because the contractors/suppliers have to 'give back' some $$$ to 'certain Govt people in authority'

Hi-tech police van to start patrols in JB soon

Report from The STAR dated Thursday 23 August 2007 :-

Hi-tech police van to start patrols in JB soon

JOHOR BARU: The first hi-tech police patrol vehicle is expected to start cruising the city soon.

The mobile patrol vehicle is installed with advanced devices and linked to the 30 closed circuit television (CCTV) units set up in strategic locations.

Johor Baru mayor Datuk Mohd Naim Nasir said the patrol van, manned by police personnel, was like a mobile operations centre.

He said the patrol team would be able to monitor situations on the streets wherever it is.

“If this works, the idea and system may be used in the whole Iskandar Development Region.

“We will do whatever we can to ensure the safety of everyone in Johor Baru,'' he said.

Mohd Naim said the project, a joint operation between City Hall and the police, was part of plans to build a smart, safe and comfortable city to live in and work.

Also planned is the setting up of an additional 12 CCTVs and four nomadic cameras for the patrol vehicle.

Locations for the CCTVs include Jalan Tebrau, Komtar building, City Square and Holiday Plaza.

Currently, 18 CCTVs are installed in areas under City Hall jurisdiction.

Mohd Naim said the RM1.5mil project is expected to be completed within this year.

“We hope to have 69 CCTVs by 2010,'' he said while leading reporters on a tour of the operations centre at Menara Tabung Haji here yesterday.

The mayor also showed reporters a video clip captured by a CCTV of a man and his friends destroying a pedestrian barricade in the town centre.

He said the group was later arrested by police.

Mohd Naim said the first three CCTVs were set up in 2001 to monitor and control traffic flows along Jalan Tebrau, a main access road into the city.

Johor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Sharif said the existing 18 CCTVs have proven to be effective in checking crime.

AirAsia to expand southern hub to tap Iskandar region

Report from The STAR dated Wednesday 29 August 2007 :-

AirAsia to expand southern hub to tap Iskandar region

JOHOR BARU : AirAsia will continue with efforts to expand its southern hub at Senai Airport in view of the great potential of the Iskandar Development Region (IDR).

“We have seen the plans for Iskandar, and we are big believers in it. When Iskandar is ready, we will already be a part of it,” said chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes.

“We are not waiting to see if Iskandar happens or not. We have faith in the state,” he added.

AirAsia simultaneously launched direct flights from Johor Baru to Macau and Palembang in Indonesia yesterday.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, Fernandes and AirAsia Deputy CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun welcomed 150 passengers from Macau who flew in on a new Airbus A320.

Fernandes said he was happy with the response from the Macau flight which recorded a load factor of 85%, compared to an average of 70%.

“It usually takes 18 months to develop a route but we have seen a 85% load factor already,” he said.

Fernandes said the airline was targeting one million passengers via Senai Airport next year. With Macau and Palembang, AirAsia now has 84 flights weekly from Senai Airport.

He added that he plans to open the no-frills hotel Tune Hotel in Danga Bay, Johor Baru.

Abdul Ghani said he was honoured that AirAsia had chosen Senai Airport as the first destination to fly its new Airbus.

“This signifies the airline’s commitment to enhance the connectivity in the region,” he said.

Rumour strikes fear in Johor townships

Report from Malaysiakini dated Wednesday 29 August 2007 :-

Rumour strikes fear in Johor townships

Two days before the country celebrates its 50th birthday, certain parts of Johor are in a grip of fear.

A rumour about racial strife in two Johor townships has been making the rounds since Sunday via SMS text-message, but authorities were swift to dismiss this as untrue.

The details vary in each text-message but the theme is essentially the same - that the purported incident involves Malays and Indians in Masai and the port town of Pasir Gudang.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the police have firmly denied this, but the authorities are not taking chances - eye-witnesses report that numerous roadblocks have been mounted.

Pasir Gudang is about 35km east of Johor Bharu while Masai is a little closer to the state capital.

At one of these, said an eye-witness, police screened vehicles from Masai entering Taman Cendana in Pasir Gudang.

When contacted, Johor PAS Youth chief Khairul Faizi Ahmad Kamil said he was told that there were about 10 roadblocks last night between Johor Bharu and Pasir Gudang.

The heavy police presence however seems to be a double-edged sword - while no doubt intended to ensure calm, it has had the effect of fueling anxiety.

“People believe that the police presence means that the scenario, as described in the rumour, must be true,” said Khairul.

“There is a lot of chatter now in the warong (stalls). There is anxiety among residents when they see one another in public.”

Allaying fears
Numerous groups, including political parties, have been scrambling to quell public fear.

Acting Johor police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff and Johor Bharu South district police chief ACP Roslan Ahmad held a special briefing last night at a school in Taman Cendana for some 300 residents (photo).

Flyers urging calm and telling the public to ignore the rumour were distributed at the event. [see below]

Permas Jaya assemblyperson KS Balakrishnan, who had accompanied Roslan, said the residents were assured that there is no truth to the claim being circulated.

Balakrishnan, whose constituency covers Taman Cendana, disagreed that the heavy police presence itself posed a source of fear.

“Because of the rumour, we must beef up efforts to ensure security. This is normal,” he told malaysiakini.

Pasir Gudang Umno deputy chief Ibrahim Abdul Ghaffar described the situation in Taman Cendana and Permas Jaya as “normal”.

“There are no Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in the two areas. People are going about their business as usual. Balakrishnan and I visited both areas last night and this morning. There were no fights,” he added.

Eyewitnesses had claimed that FRU trucks were stationed in the two locations, but that they had not seen personnel being deployed.

Fears spreading online
Meanwhile, the rumour has sparked discussion in Internet forums and blogs.

A search of major sites in Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin revealed varying degrees of fear being expressed, as well as eyewitness reports.

Popular Bahasa Malaysia Internet forum cari.com.my drew more than 500 posts under the topic ‘What is the situation like in Pasir Gudang?’.

A Mandarin forum, jbtalks.cc has attracted more than 760 posts with many claiming that they would stay indoors in the coming days, as they fear unrest.

Numerous forums re-published an email from one ‘Ahmad Roh’ who claims to be from Taman Cendana.

“What we Taman Cendana residents are facing lately is sadness resulting from the false SMS which has mushroomed...

"If this continues, we will not forgive these ‘SMS journalist’ [sic] who are rumour-mongers. They are obsessed with creating stories that are spreading fear among the (community),” reads the email denying the rumour, the content of which also appeared in the flyers distributed by the police at the meeting with residents yesterday.

“Have any of you seen or received (mobile phone pictures) that can prove that we are under attack, (or are engaging in) attacks and riots? Let us answer this question: It would be a lie if you (rumour-mongers) say that you have received or seen such pictures.”

2 held for spreading rumours 2 held for spreading rumours

Report from The New Straits Times dated Thursday 30 August 2007 :-

2 held for spreading rumours 2 held for spreading rumours

JOHOR BARU : Two men have been detained under the Internal Security Act on suspicion of spreading inflammatory text messages.

Johor acting police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the men, aged 25 and 29, were nabbed on Tuesday and have been remanded to help in the investigations.

The suspects are said to be private sector employees.

Mokhtar stressed that the allegations sent via text messages were all false.

"Nobody has been shot, murdered or attacked in Pasir Gudang or Masai as claimed," he said at the police headquarters last night.

"Please do not use text messages to spread rumours. We will not tolerate this nonsense."

Mokhtar said they are still trying to verify the origin of the text messages.

He also said police are expecting more arrests and those who forwarded the messages will also be detained.

As a precautionary measure, police have beefed up security in Masai and Pasir Gudang with more than 200 Federal Reserve Unit and General Operations Force in those areas.

Since the beginning of the month, text messages have been circulated alleging that racial riots will break out in the towns on National Day.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had expressed unhappiness over the text messages which he had described as "nonsense".

Another man in JB arrested for spreading rumour

Report from The STAR dated Saturday 1 September 2007 :-

Another man in JB arrested for spreading rumour

JOHOR BARU : Another man was arrested Saturday under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for allegedly spreading the rumour of racial riots in Johor.

The arrest brings to five the number of people detained in connection with the spreading of the rumour.

Johor acting police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Sharif said the 27-year-old suspect was picked up around midnight Friday.

He said the suspect would be investigated for disseminating false information.

SAC Mohd Mokhtar said police would not tolerate such behaviour and stern action would be taken against those who spread such rumours.

He also thanked the public for their cooperation and understanding that no untoward incidents had happened.

He against clarified that the SMSes and e-mail messages being circulated about racial clashes in Pasir Gudang were baseless and unfounded.

Re: Johor Baru Before After Dark

I got a call regarding the "situation" in JB, so I quickly contacted our resident KNN chief and he told me that it was all quiet in the southern front. So I just ignored that. Maybe some provision shop guys tried the old trick that could trigger a rush for their stale provisions and maggie mee

Afternoon Prof. I fail to understand why people want to create all these rumours. As if the actual situation already not bad enough. Should try these people for treason and exile them to afghanistan or something.

Glad to see that you are 'alive & kicking' !

Hi Bro KLK,

Certainly there must be some vested interest in spreading rumours, like what I had guessed that somebody must be trying to cause a rush for provisions

Many years ago, maybe a decade, there was a malicious rumour in the Klang Valley that the Indons were arming and stocking parangs to strike Chinese...thus...there was a mad ruch for food [even my nearby provision shops' stale provisions and maggie mee were all grabbed within a day!]

Yeah, if they are charged with treason, they will be hanged and not banished to Afganistan

I prefer to be banished to Chiang Mai

I think those privision/sundry shops in Masai and Pasir Gudang are facing very stiff competition from the nearby hypermarkets (like Giant, Tesco, Makro, Carrefour & Jaya Jusco) and have no business at all.......

So they device a plan to spread SMS rumours about impending racial clashes to panic people so that they rush to 'sapu' all the stocks of essential household items from them ......

Actually, it is a 'marketing strategy' and is part of the Merdeka Mega Sales 2007 campaign
