Viet sisters want menwho don't drink, beat wives

THESE Vietnamese sisters had been resigned to marrying farmers in their country. Miss Ha Kim Amh and her younger sister, Miss Ha Kim Ngoc, never dreamt of marrying a foreigner.

But now, the Ha sisters want Singaporean husbands.

They are looking for the perfect match with the help of Mr Mark Lin, managing director of Vietnam Brides International Matchmaker.

Speaking in Vietnamese, Miss Kim Ngoc, 20, said: 'Our cousin kept encouraging us to get Singaporean husbands. She married one and she kept saying he was a good man.'

Two years ago, her 24-year-old cousin had been recruited as a Vietnamese bride by Mr Lin's agency.

The Taiwanese, who migrated here 10 years ago, has agents in Vietnam to look for the brides, and organises matchmaking tours to Vietnam for his Singapore customers.

The Ha sisters' cousin and her 35-year-old husband, who earns $1,500 a month as a warehouse assistant, have a 9-month-old son.

The family has visited Vietnam twice since they got married.

Miss Kim Ngoc said: 'We can see that he loves my cousin very much. She also said he does not drink or beat her.'

Last year, the sisters decided that they wanted to marry Singapore men too.

With their cousin's help, they contacted Ms Pham Ngoe Anh, Mr Lin's chief agent in Vietnam.

FAMILY OF FARMERS

Mr Lin, 43, pointed out: 'It's very rare for the Vietnamese women to approach the matchmaker directly. Usually we have to go and look for them.'

The sisters' parents are corn and rice farmers in Tay Ninh province, about two hours' drive from Ho Chi Minh City. They earn about $120 a month.

They have two other sisters aged 24 and 18, and a 16-year-old brother. Their elder sister is married to a Vietnamese driver, while the younger kids are in school.

Miss Kim Amh and Miss Kim Ngoc left school after Secondary 1 and 3 respectively. Both work at a shoe factory.

So why are Singapore men better?

Miss Kim Amh, 22, explained: 'Vietnamese men have a reputation for alcoholism and violence. We hear that most Singaporean men don't do that and are like my cousin's husband.'

So what do they look for in a husband?

Miss Kim Ngoc said: 'He must love me, have a job and treat me well.'

Her sister nodded in agreement.

Though they said looks and age are not major factors, they would prefer their husbands 'not to be too ugly' and not over 55.

Mr Lin said most of his customers are above 35.

The sisters claimed never to have had boyfriends and to be virgins. Mr Lin claimed a medical check showed they were telling the truth.

PARENTS CONCERNED

The sisters, who have travelled out of the country before, said their parents were initially concerned when they told them they wanted to travel to Singapore to look for husbands.

'They were worried whether the men would treat us well,' Miss Kim Ngoc said.

'But after we explained to them why we wanted Singaporean husbands, they understood.'

The women stayed with Ms Pham for two months in her Vietnam home to take makeup, fashion and Chinese lessons before they flew into Singapore.

Miss Kim Amh arrived here on Jan 21 while her younger sister came six days later. Their social visit passes were approved at different times.

They are staying at a private apartment that Mr Lin rents for his Vietnamese brides.

He started bringing such brides to Singapore in the middle of last year.

Every day from 10.30am to 8pm, the sisters sit in Mr Lin's office at Golden Mile Tower waiting for men to walk in.

So far, Miss Kim Ngoc has met five men while her elder sister has met three.

But no matches have been made yet. Both sides must agree before any match is made, Mr Lin said.

Miss Kim Amh recalled: 'There was a man in his 50s, but I didn't like him because he talked too much and he kept boasting that he was rich.

'Another man was old, penniless and walked with a limp, yet he was very picky and wanted a woman who was beautiful and had big breasts.'

Miss Kim Amh said she was attracted to a 38-year-old.

'He wasn't bad-looking, seemed sincere, had a cheerful personality, and I enjoyed talking to him. He seemed to like me too.'

But alas, the man did not make a deal with Mr Lin.

Miss Kim Ngoc met with the same men her sister talked to, but none stole her heart.

She said she thought a 39-year-old man who runs a shop near the matchmaking agency was 'not too bad' except that he was too picky and chauvinistic.

Mr Lin said it is taking a little longer than usual for the sisters to find a match.

Usually the women he brings to Singapore strike a deal within a week.

What if both sisters take a fancy to the same man?

Miss Kim Ngoc answered diplomatically: 'Then we'll let the man choose. We won't fight over the same man.'

Both women insist they will only marry the man if they like him.

Kim Ngoc said: 'Of course we're afraid of marrying the wrong man. But we think Singapore men should be okay.'

This year, the sisters spent Chinese New Year in a foreign land.

Miss Kim Amh said with a grin: 'We miss home, but it's okay. Chinese New Year isn't as important as finding a husband.'

Their social visit passes are valid only for a month.

spend 30th nite in a prc zone for a little de-vietnamisation excercise cos a brudder of mine ask me go cos he not seen me 4 a long time .....

got to know a 21 y.o prc ....kinda cute and trying to see if my vietnamisation program will work on a fellow communist .......

so far so good ....she has been reporting to me everyday after work ..... will keep a close look-out and anyway my ba xa coming back this friday .....

are they cheongsters in the 1st place ..... this usually happens when the guys visit a foreign land ....heard & seen lots of it in my native vietnam and mainly from the viet-kieus (foreign born viets or with foreign passports)

Sr NG Lament,

Perhaps you are right on the question if they are cheongsters.
However the chances of them being 1 is very high

If they are not in the cheong community, where would they be able to get sources and also avenues to sell their sources?
There are alot of people in JC and the other arena that sticks to their area to get more sources and also customers.

Else how would anyone not in the field know about anything that is going on in there?
