Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
Manchester United beat City to reach League Cup final
Thursday, January 28, 2010, 06:21:20 HRS Manchester City's English defender Micah Richards (R) vies with Manchester United's English forward Wayne Rooney during the English Carling Cup semi-final second leg football match at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Manchester City in Manchester. Manchester won 3-1. Wayne Rooney's 91st-minute header secured a 3-1 victory for Manchester United over rivals City at Old Trafford and carried the holders through to a League Cup final meeting with Aston Villa. The England forward struck with a close range header from a Ryan Giggs cross following a well-worked short corner and clinched a 4-3 aggregate semi-final victory, denying City what would have been a place in their first major final for 29 years. On an evening of high drama at Old Trafford, former United forward Carlos Tevez -- scorer of both goals in City's 2-1 first leg victory last week -- was again prominent as his 75th minute goal tied the aggregate scores at 3-3. After a goalless first half, Rooney sent Giggs racing clear in the 51st minute and, after City appeared to have halted the attack, Michael Carrick's pass found veteran midfielder Paul Scholes who finished clinically from a dozen yards. In the 70th minute, the tie looked decided after Darren Fletcher laid a Nani pass into the path of Carrick who scored with a precision 'pass' into the corner of the City goal. But Tevez struck five minutes later, flicking the ball powerfully into the home goal from eight yards after United failed to deal with Craig Bellamy's cross. The build-up to the second leg had been intense; the feud between Tevez and Gary Neville, the FA warning both clubs about their behaviour, City's chief exec Garry Cook appearing in a televised rally in which he gloated to his club's fans that they would become "the biggest and the best in the world." There had also been a major operation by Great Manchester Police, who made a number of pre-match raids around the region in an effort to avoid the crowd trouble that had marred the first leg. Against this backdrop, the game started at a frenetic pace with United playing Rooney as a solitary striker ahead of a five-man midfield. Nani, so impressive in helping Rooney score four in the weekend league victory over Hull, forced young City defender Dedryck Boyata to make a superb defending header with Rooney poised to connect. Manchester City's Argentinian forward Carlos Tevez (L) tangles with Manchester United's English defender Rio Ferdinand after scoring during the English Carling Cup semi-final second leg football match at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Manchester City in Manchester. United won 3-1. Tevez was being jeered by home support every time he touched the ball and his former fans were far from impressed when he went down heavily after Rio Ferdinand appeared to accidentally catch the Argentine under the chin with his trailing arm. But City, full of pace and daring on the counter-attack, looked capable of adding to their slender first leg advantage. In the 22nd minute, Shaun Wright-Phillips landed a perfect cross for Bellamy whose effort was well kept out by Edwin van der Sar before Tevez tested the keeper with a diving header. United responded with Giggs' latching onto Fletcher's neat lay-off and drawing a fine save from Given before the Irish keeper was again alert in keeping out Giggs' dangerous cross after a rare slip by Boyata. If anything, the second half opened in even more intense fashion than the first with defender Micah Richards being allowed to advance to the edge of the United area before testing van der Sar. Tevez was booked for a nasty hack at Rafael, joining Scholes in the book for a first half foul on Wright-Phillips and the mood darkened further when Bellamy appeared to be hit by a coin thrown by United fans as he took a City corner. A minute later, Scholes levelled the aggregate score and, shortly after, had a hand in another promising attack which ended with a goalmouth scramble and Fletcher seeing his shot deflected to safety. Boyata had to defend heroically, again, to keep out a Nani cross while Carrick did well in flicking over a threatening Richards header but, after Carrick had doubled United's lead, a miss by Rooney looked in danger of becoming the game?s turning point. The moment came in the 72nd minute from Patrice Evra's left-wing cross which Rooney, off-balance, directed wide. Three minutes later, Tevez equalised the aggregate score and United were back at square one. A late Carrick shot and weak header from substitute Emmaneul Adebayor both failed to threaten the keepers and the semi-final appeared to be heading for extra-time until the late drama. - AFP |

MY PREFERRED STARTING LINEUP AGAINST ARSENAL... Valencia and Nani/PJS will play the flanks. Rooney and Berbatov Striker, Fletcher And Giggs Centre Of The Park... Evra,Ferdinand,Evans And Rafael Will Defend Goal...With VDS At Goal... Rooney = the best there is,the best there was, the best there will ever be...

SAF should be planning for Evans and Smalling to finally take over from Ferdinand and Vidic. Yes, Fletcher will be the destroyer against the guile and craft of Fabregas. Stop Fabregas and United will have practically won the game. Ferdinand starts the first of his 4 game suspension for violent conduct. Nani should make it to the starting 11 based on his good game agst Man City. Will put him in place of Giggs. Carrick to be playmaker with Fletcher in midfield. My preferred starting 11 vs Arsenal : Van Der Sar Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra Valencia, Fletcher, Carrick, Nani Rooney, Berbatov Rooney to notch in his 22nd goal of the season and United to win 2 nil. Doesn't matter who's the other scorer lah.

Nani blows hot and cold and can be super frustrating to watch. Wants to be a certain Ronaldo, (first name Cristiano) but buay sai lei. Park Ji Sung's way too lightweight. Me thinks Ferguson will opt to play Giggs instead. Fearful that Man Utd will be too dependent on Rooney to carry the scoring burden (think Liverpoot/Liverfool and Torres). And Berbatov??? Berbatov Berbatov, where are thou! In conclusion, Man Utd should win by one. |

Transfer Gossip
ANDERSON AND LLORIS TO SWAP? Anderson out and Hugo Lloris in at ManYoo? The Sun seems to think so. The paper reports that the Brazilian midfielder is 'on the verge of a loan move to Lyon, which could include a swap deal involving French international keeper Hugo Lloris. 'It is thought Lloris, 23, would welcome a switch to the Prem. But he must be convinced it is in his best interests to understudy current United No 1 Edwin van der Sar, now 39. 'If Lloris arrives, Fergie will know that both Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak will have serious questions to be answered about their Old Trafford goalkeeping futures.'

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
This is an interesting article.....
It's all over for captain John Terry. Now Fabio Capello should turn to Wayne Rooney John Terry is finished as England captain. You can fight, booze, womanise and be photographed standing naked on top of London’s Millennium Eye singing ‘Ave Maria’ and still keep the biggest job in football. But bed a team-mate’s partner and it all gets a little too tricky. You can’t dip your pen in company ink and retain authority. Picture the scene: last five minutes of a World Cup semi-final against Brazil in June, it’s 1-1, a player goes down injured and Terry calls his boys together for one last great rallying cry. ‘Lads, we’ve got to stick together, dig deep, stay close, trust each other, stay loyal...’ To which Wayne Bridge snorts in disbelief, shouts ‘You hypocritical, lying, cheating *******’, and smacks him on the nose. No, if England coach Fabio Capello doesn’t sack him, then he’ll be forced to go soon enough anyway because Fleet Street’s most merciless hounds will rip the Chelsea star to pieces until he does. It’s the law of the media jungle. Just ask Tiger Woods. Which leaves us with the question of who should replace him. On strictly moral grounds, it’s not easy. Most of the England squad have been guilty of sins of the flesh — be it bedding lap-dancers behind girlfriends’ backs, committing adultery with my cousins (Rebecca Loos...), hiring hookers, or simply breaking people’s skin open in bars. But based on strictly on-field criteria, I think the choice gets simpler. Because I’ve always believed the best player in a football team should be the captain. Football isn’t like cricket, where you are required to make hundreds of tactical decisions over five days. The only thing an England football captain needs to do is lead out his team, inspire them for 90 minutes, terrify the opposition with his mere presence, and be a good role model and ambassador. And is there anyone else right now who ticks as many boxes as Wayne Rooney? He’s ferociously passionate about playing for his country, well-loved by his colleagues, revered by the fans, and is almost as saintly off the pitch these days as he is devilish on it. Rooney is a player right at the top of his game. A hunting, predatory, world-class striker without a weakness. He’s a ruthless finisher as witness his four-goal haul against Hull. And his shooting rate is going through the roof. In his 30 Premier League games last season he had 163 shots, scoring 12 goals. In just 22 this season, he’s already had 176 shots, scoring 19 goals. He’s unusually unselfish – a real team player, like Thierry Henry, who seems to derive as much pleasure from an assist as a goal. He’s relentless, running around like an amphetamine-fuelled bulldog until the final whistle in every game he plays. He defends and runs back as hard as he attacks. He is increasingly disciplined. Yes, he’s had 79 yellow and four reds in his explosive eight-year career. But just five yellows and no reds this season suggest a new maturity and self-control. He is behaving himself off the field, too. No more granny prostitute stories, no nightclub fights, no nothing. He has become the consummate professional stay-at-home-after-training dad and husband. When Manchester United walk out at the Emirates this afternoon, every Arsenal fan, including me, will look at Rooney first and wonder how the hell we’re going to stop him. I reckon he’d make a brilliant England captain.

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
Takeover lobby for MU?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/foot...td/8488910.stm Wealthy Man Utd fans approach broker about takeover Keith Harris reveals interest in Man Utd takeover Football financier Keith Harris has been approached by wealthy investors to broker a takeover of Manchester United. Manchester United's Supporters' Trust has held meetings with influential club supporters interested in exploring the options for a change of ownership. And Harris says that the time has come for supporters to buy the club back from the Glazer family. "You sense that the momentum is gathering and this time these fans truly mean it," Harris told BBC Sport. "I think they are saying that enough is enough, there is too much gearing on this football club and it is unhealthy." Harris, the head of merchant bank Seymour Pierce, has been involved in four Premier League club takeovers and has long been critical of United's debt that earlier in January was recorded at £716m. United's recent bond issue raised £500m to ease their debts, but also provoked a furious backlash from many fans, some demanding an immediate change of ownership. Despite the move by the Manchester United's Supporters' Trust, the Glazer family have told BBC Sport that they are here for the long-term and insisted that their interests are aligned with those of the fans. On Friday members of Manchester United's Supporters' Trust met with "super-rich" and "influential" investors, with lifelong United fan Harris at the centre of the discussions. Harris declined to name any of the people who have approached him, identifying them only as 'The Red Knights'. "We have been approached and if we can lend our weight for doing something for the good of Manchester United and football we will," Harris told BBC Sport's Football Focus show. "In this case of Manchester United, of whom I am a huge fan and have been for 50 years, they are playing with an icon of football, one of the most respected football brands in the world and it is in danger. "Seventy-five pence of every pound that [Manchester United] fans are spending is now going to the Glazers either for themselves or to pay debts." Senior members of the Manchester United Supporters' Trust met with the 'Red Knights' on Friday in London BBC Sport's Dan Roan "If these rumblings become a revolution and fans stop going - as difficult as it is for them not to go - and the pounds stop coming in, there is real peril." Malcolm Glazer and other members of his family took control of Manchester United in 2005 but their purchase of the club was largely funded with borrowed money. Interest payments on that money have since plunged United into deeper debt and despite winning the Premier League for the third year in a row, the Carling Cup and the Club World Cup last season only the £80m sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid helped the club record pre-tax profits of £48.2m for the year to 30 June 2009. The team also finished runners-up in the Uefa Champions League. Harris is unsure how the offer will be received by the Glazers but believes the family should in effect take the money and hand over the keys to Manchester United. "It depends on the Glazers' attitude," added Harris. "Clearly they appeared impervious to the protests when they took the club over and that was fine. "They don't go [to watch United] very often, they stay in America but you've got to think their businesses in America haven't done well, they can't have done, because the world in general has not done well in business. "They are probably highly geared in their business activities in America so, if this is an opportunity for them to take the money and go, I would hope they would listen carefully to that offer, providing the money can be raised and I am confident it can be." But Manchester United themselves have told BBC Sport that they are comfortable with the financial situation at the club, and that manager Sir Alex Ferguson has the £80m the club received from Real Madrid for Ronaldo to spend on new players. "Manchester United is the most profitable football club in the world," read a club statement. "Last year, on a record turnover of £278m, the club made a record cash profit of £91m. Interest payments were £41m and wages accounted for less than half of the turnover. The Glazer family, led by Malcolm Glazer, bought United in 2005 "The recent bond issue has been very successful and provides the club with certainty in its interest payments, as well as great flexibility with the removal of bank covenants. "The cash from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo is available for Sir Alex to spend and it will be spent on players who are available for purchase and who the manager thinks can improve the squad, not to prove to pundits that it exists." Harris is unsure how much a takeover will cost, but is certain that the time has come for change at Old Trafford. "It's too early to say how much would have to be raised," said Harris. "These debts have run on for a long while and I think they need to be cleared. "I would hope that there would be sufficient money in addition to that to show the Glazers they could take a profit for owning the business for five years and go and put the ownership into more caring hands. "This is now serious, what you don't know is if the Glazers can be made to listen, but what you do know is that there is a serious intent on the part of those people, who have not just support in their hearts, but the ability to muster support from their pockets to get after this, and the time feels right."

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
Gill: We're buyers, not sellers
Bidding for Benzema, retaining Rooney and controlling Carrington were some of the key themes when David Gill spoke to BBC Radio this weekend. The United chief executive told Five Live that a new contract for top scorer Wayne Rooney would be on this summer's agenda, and confirmed that France striker Karim Benzema, then with Lyon, was on last summer's shopping list. "We didn't get Benzema but we did offer 35m Euros," revealed David Gill. "(We made) just one phone call to the States (to United's owners, the Glazer family), saying we would like to make an offer of 35m Euros and they said 'fine'. "We did it, but Benzema went to Real Madrid for something like over 40m Euros. Sir Alex has gone on record saying that was too much. "But if I (again) went to Joel Glazer and said 'Alex wants a particular player, can we have the money?', the answer would be an unequivocal yes. They have demonstrated it. "From my own personal perspective, we have no doubt that they (the Glazers) would support whatever we require. "They will only get value back by ensuring the team continues to be successful, continues to attract exciting players and continues to produce results off the pitch." Hence the determination to retain Wayne Rooney, arguably the player of the season so far. On this subject, Gill said: "Unless Sir Alex agreed to it, we would not accept an offer, regardless of the value, for a player we want to keep. "Wayne has a contract through until 2012. He has gone on record to say he wants to stay and we want him to stay. "I'm sure that will be addressed in the close season. We hope that would be the case as we want to put him on a new, long-term contract. He's 24 and got the best years of his life ahead of him. "Very few players, particularly UK-based players, want to leave Manchester United." David Gill also refuted suggestions that United's training ground at Carrington might be sold and leased back to the club to help pay off debts. "I am 100 per cent convinced that will never happen under Glazer family ownership. The sale and leaseback opportunity within the bond document is done for financial and tax planning. Manchester United Limited continue to have complete control of Carrington."

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
Fergie salutes "unbelievable" Rooney as United destroy Arsenal
Monday, February 01, 2010, 02:58:44 HRS Manchester United's English striker Wayne Rooney (R) celebrates scoring the second goal with teammate Portuguese midfielder Nani (L) during their English Premier League football match against Arsenal at the Emirates in London. United won 3-1. Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Wayne Rooney's influential display had been the key to Manchester United's imperious 3-1 win at title rivals Arsenal on Sunday. Ferguson's side moved within one point of leaders Chelsea after Manuel Almunia's own goal was followed by a typically predatory finish from Rooney and a solo strike from South Korea's Park Ji-Sung. United were at their ruthless best at the Emirates Stadium and no-one better encapsulated the champions' effervescent display better than Rooney. The England forward was at the heart of United's devastating counter-attacks and finished off their best break with his 100th Premier League goal and his 22nd of this season. "Wayne was unbelievable. He was the key point for us in the sense that they just couldn't handle him," Ferguson said. "Everything was played towards him and he was on it all the time. He was a really great player." Rooney is attracting interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid, but the former Everton star insists he would happily spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford and Ferguson expects David Gill, the club's chief executive, to tie him to a new contract soon. "I know how happy he is here. He is very popular among the players. He couldn't be a better lad really. He is really down to earth and he won't change because that is the way he is," Ferguson said. "It is refreshing in this day and age when you see a lot of celebrity footballers who earn a lot of money. He never changes but a lot do with success. "I'm sure David Gill is working with his agent Paul Stretford and hopefully something does happen." Ferguson believes United's midweek win over Manchester City in the League Cup semi-finals has given his players an extra burst of energy that could carry them to the title. "It was great performance there's no doubt about that. I'm really pleased because it is the time of year when we need to really kick on," he said. "I think Wednesday's result (against Manchester City) has galvanised us again and you saw the players were really ready for the game. They were sharp and good in their passing. We made a lot of chances. "Counter-attack has always been part of our game. We capitalised on a lot of those opportunities here because Arsenal get to the edge of your box regularly, then if you can win the ball and counter-attack quick you get good chances against them." Manchester United's Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher (L) vies with Arsenal's Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas (R) during their English Premier League football match against Arsenal at the Emirates in London. United won 3-1. While Ferguson's team look in the rudest of health, Arsenal's title hopes were completely exposed, prompting manager Arsene Wenger to launch an unusually scathing attack on his players. "It is difficult to accept but easy to explain because we were poor defensively and offensively. We delivered an off the mark performance and that is why we were well beaten," Wenger said. "We gave them too much room. We were naive. It is difficult to say straight after the game why we were not at our level. Did we want it too much' Were we a bit inhibited or tense'. I don't know. "It is too early to analyse but I believe there are some mental reasons. "We had two corners and conceded two goals. I believe the intelligence of our positioning was wrong. "It is a massive blow and a massive disappointment. The players wanted to win, they are really down. We have to recover from that. That is part of top-level football." - AFP |

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
The buildup to Rooney's goal was reminiscent of the Ronaldo-Rooney days. Except this time it's Nani-Rooney.... Nani's passing in the past few games has been sniper-sharp. Hope he can keep this up. But then, now he'll prob suffer the same fate as Ronaldo did - every time he gets the ball there'll be 3 opponents pouncing on him.... lol

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours
United's Player Ratings against Arsenal - Guardian UK
Edwin van der Sar: Rarely troubled until beaten by Vermaelen's deflected volley. Oozes assuredness where Arsenal are vulnerable in the same position 7 Rafael Da Silva: May have been targeted as a weak link, but is growing with every performance. Rosicky made few inroads down his flank 7 Wes Brown: Initially appeared vulnerable but was still abrasive and offered reassurance to his less experienced team-mates 6 Johnny Evans: Often exposed in the air though on the turf he was more assured and snuffed out the danger from Arshavin 7 Patrice Evra: Allowed Arsenal no joy down that side. Was eager to contribute offensively and just as energetic when shuttling back 7 Darren Fletcher: He was all industry and clever passing, breaking up Arsenal's passing then springing United forward with class in distribution 8 Paul Scholes: Asked to snuff out the threat posed by Fábregas but metronomic and menacing with his passing from deep 8 Michael Carrick: His passing smacked of real quality. It was his chip into space that sent Park scurrying through for the third goal 8 Nani: Ronaldo would have been proud to muster a run and trick as blistering as that which traumatised Nasri and Clichy 8.5 Wayne Rooney: Playing the football of his life, terrorising markers and scoring his 100th Premier League goal with a sweet finish 9 Park Ji-sung: All bustling energy down his flank and unfazed by Sagna, with his pace and industry exposing Arsenal on the breakn 8 Cheerz AC
