I have always asked why thin socks is more smelly ...

here's why from google, but I think it makes sense

2 reasons,
1) the thick "athletic" socks pull the moisture through out the whole sock allowing it to not only dry faster but to help prevent the bacteria which causes odor to localize. These socks also have a higher cotton content.
2) The thin socks are usually not cotton, or their cotton content is low, and they collect moisture causing bacteria closer to the skin thus making them stink more. It is as simple as that!
