Not our intention to do away with orientation: NUS President

SINGAPORE: The President of National University of Singapore (NUS), Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, said on Monday (Aug 1) that it is not the varsity's intention to do away with orientation, days after it suspended all student-organised freshmen activities.

Last Friday, NUS said it was suspending these activities after it received information that there had been instances of unauthorised and unsupervised freshmen activities despite the university's earlier instructions on the matter. The unauthorised activities came to light after a video circulating online showed students dunking at least two people in a pond at Sheares Hall on Jul 27.

On Monday, Prof Tan said during the Freshmen Inauguration Ceremony 2016 that NUS wants to work with students to "rethink how to do orientation in more meaningful ways so that all students, especially freshmen, will get to enjoy the orientation experience".

He also took the opportunity to apologise to the freshmen whose first days at NUS had "been clouded by the controversies surrounding student-organised orientation activities," he said, adding that for the "vast majority" of students, orientation is an "exciting, positive and memorable experience".

"The university does, however, expect orientation activities to be fully respectful of the dignity of all those participating, and in recent years, we have put in place many measures to help ensure this," Prof Tan said. "In particular, we make our stand very clear: We do not condone behaviour, games and activities that denigrate the dignity of individuals and that are sexualised.
