Leave your car unlocked in JB - even for seconds - and lose it !

Report from Stomp (Singapore) dated 8 June 2014 :-

Leave your car unlocked in JB - even for seconds - and lose it !

You should never leave your car unlocked across the Causeway - even for a second. This video clip of a case of car theft at the Shell Station at Taman Impian Emas, in Skudai, Johor Bahru, shows you why. In the video, the driver can be seen walking away from his vehicle at the petrol kiosk, leaving his doors unlocked. A man riding pillion on a motorbike moves up swiftly and gets into the driver's seat, quickly driving off and leaving the car's owner stranded.

Not that I am damn shiok to hear of Sinkies get robbed. Just that Sinkies are too conditioned to not look after themselves when overseas so they got robbed. They only have themselves to blame by not taking precautions. Not only Sinkies, this applies to every nationality.

Re: Cheong Safely in JB

Latest news reported that spore side has announced that the toll charge will increase from $1.20 to $6.50 = rm16.50 to match with msia side of toll rm16.50 on the 1st October 2014.

That means any car (regardless spore or msia registered) will have to pay the toll fee of rm33 in total excluding VEP charges on a return journey. This is in fact a wise move by both govt to control the traffic condition at the causeway.

Since spore on 1st august has raised the VEP fee for msia car from $20 to $35 = rm90, msia side should consider to implement VEP for spore car at the fee of rm90 instead of rm50 suggested earlier so that the VEP fee could match for both countries. It is important to equalise the toll and vep fees on both sides.

At present there may be some spore cars travel to other parts of msia for many days or weeks thus contributing to the traffic congestion of that areas.

Msia should also follow what spore is doing to charge the vep fee on spore cars on a per day basis and not per entry basis. This will regulate, control and reduce the number of spore cars entering into JB and other parts of msia.

As a result of less spore car entering msia, not only the causeway will be less congested, even in JB, melaka, KL roads will be less jam as well.

Spore side is charging VEP for msia motorbike at $4=rm10. Msia side should also do the same and charge spore motorbike at rm 10 per day to match the fee on both side. Hope msia side do not wait till end of year to implement the vep but to implement as soon as possible so that traffic at jb town and causeway can be improved.

Actually among all the vehicles crossing the causeway, cars and motorbike make up the majority. if the numbers of both of these vehicles are reduced, then travelling across the causeway will be a breeze for the benefit of all commuters...

Re: Cheong Safely in JB

Bro rav.evc, probably you should look at a bigger picture and consider the interest of johorian as a whole and not just the minority retailers.

When less sporean comes to jb to spend means less money will be pumped into the economy of jb. Then cost of living will then be reduced to an affordable level for the local people. It has been a fact that Johorian who work in jb suffered because of the high cost of living standard. Their buying power or wealth are not as great as their counterparts who work in spore.

For your info, jb is the most costly city to stay with the highest cost of living in msia above KL. Therefore please also spare a thought for the majority local johorian people and not just those minority of msian who work in spore.

As you know that the property market in jb has been speculated by sporean & foreigner. The effect of these has caused the property price in jb to increase at least 3 folds for the past 7 years, why i know because i have been monitoring the property market since then.

The negative result of these property boom is that many of the local people (who works in jb) be it newly married couple, etc could not afford an average landed property in jb which could easily cost 600k and above compared to about rm200k just few years ago.

I have many friends who are real johorian (土生土长) who reside in jb and they always hoped that one day the cost of living and property price in jb can return to the level back during the last decade which is in the early 2000s. This can only be achieved if foreign investments are greatly reduced.

There is always alternative way of travelling beside using motorbike as a mode of transport. Public buses, taxis and mrt is abundant. In fact human should always look towards a greener environment by reducing pollution and waste. That's why many countries always encourage their citizens to use public transport instead.

Furthermore, now the msia govt is looking into arranging many shuttle bus services for johorian to commute between the two countries. There will be many pick-up points in jb for convenience.

They are also looking into the feasibility of getting KTM train to provide short travel service across the causeway between the CIQ and woodland train station in order to reduce the traffic.

In addition, the msia govt are also considering to build a proper pedestrian walkway for the people to walk across the causeway all the way to the CIQ complex.

Re: Cheong Safely in JB

as per the link from LTA at the bottom of my post, if both Malaysia and Singapore want to practise equal treatment/charges then the proposed VEP for SG cars entering MY should only be applicable for certain timings as per stipulated by LTA.

On top of that SG cars should also have 10 VEP free days per calendar year which are being accorded to MY vehicles at the moment.

If that's the case the jam might still be there because from 5PM onwards which is the peak hour the VEP is not applicable.

Seriously I guess they would just keep changing and changing until don't know when or what desired outcome only then would they stop.

Ultimately it's the commoners who's just trying to make a living traveling from MY to SG and the SG ppl who's traveling to MY in order to save on some daily expenses that suffer...

Thumbs down Re: Cheong Safely in JB

Lowering property prices & cost of living is a move backwards.
More people investing & visiting JB increases investments.
so what if you reduce property prices back to year 2000 when a Double Storey Terrace costs RM300k when the people only earn RM3000 a month. Can they finance their mortgage?
What should be looked at is higher income or salary. Better quality workforce to increase the service standards. Then you can demand higher prices & better income.
NO ONE complains about the cost of living in most cities if the balance between income & costs of living is met.
The current government should reduce taxation on most fronts.
Its the mismanagement of the government that is the main cause.
If no foreign investments do you think the disposable income of msians would increase living standards? Its the weak Msian Currency thats the main cause.
Malaysia's Income cap is at rm1200 (increased from rm900).
Thats less than USD 400.
What do you think you can get with that?
You need to purchase materials from other countries as Msia doesnt produce everything. Even the petrol we produce is jet quality but our government is complaining on subsidies. WTF is this? Msian cars produced here are more expensive than the selling price overseas. Where's the logic when you tax all the way from the income of the workers till its sold in Msia?
Being expensive is ok but it has to equad to quality received.
Look at the security in Msia? Its a shock there are still tourists.
If you depend on other sources of economy, where does Msia stand? We dont have enough skilled workers..if there was their attitude sucks. In costs, it cant be cheaper than in china. Even assembly of cars, brands choose thailand. They claim to control many rulings as an islamic country but are they really one?

By the way, i am a Malaysian sick of this country's governance & administration.
This country has no future.

Re: Cheong Safely in JB

Increasing toll costs is the easiest way to attain quick and non investment income.
Why dont they do this in the context of reducing traffic?
Why does all solutions has to have the people suffering?
Thats coz they are not too bright & plain lazy.
Why not.....
Increase the immigration counters?
Improve on speed in customs checking?
Have special access for people who enter & leave Spore frequently like in the northern immigration?
Widen the causeway?
All i mention needs costs.

just merely increasing toll prices is a no brainer way of a ssolution.knowing their intentions & capabilities, they just want to make a quick buck.
just calculate, if the current implementation of an increased toll charges just lasts for 6 months, how much additional income is there for both countries?
When economy is bad and their segment of people are the ones suffering they would make a quick U-Turn.
then where goes the increased toll fees they collected these few months?
This Msian Government is just too Predictable...

Bro, good comments.

However, I do agree with you to a certain extent.

There are in fact many talented and rich people has moved out of msia. One example is Robert kuok, the richest man in msia aka sugar king of asia who grew up in johor bahru has moved most of his business out of msia, including selling away his property company pelangi berhad few years ago.

As you mentioned that the average msian income cap is at rm1200, I doubt the msian working in msia can have a good increase in their salary because firstly investors are attracted to invest in msia due to its cheaper labour cost than other developed countries and secondly the quality of products and services level have not attained world class standard yet. Msia also failed to attact enough large foreign multi national corporations to provide high income for the working rakyat.

Msia has a vision that in year 2020, msia will achieve "first world country" status. However one of my msian friend jokingly said that unless you put another "0" behind year 2020 or else there is no way it can obtain that status.

Since msian in the near future will not be able to have their income raised to a level like in spore, then in order for the local people to live a normal live, the property prices must then be low and affordable and cost of living should also be low to tally/match with their income.

When a country is moving backwards does not imply that it is completely bad too.

At least you will still have a affordable and suitable retirement place to stay should you decide not to work anymore.

I am not trying to promote msia but just like to share on these facts. In life, the most important things are house and car. Unfortunately these two things are really much more expensive in spore than in msia.

One house in spore can buy almost 20 houses in msia of the same size and build quality

One car in spore can equate to 3-4 cars of the same make/model in msia.

One litre of petrol in spore can buy 3 litres of petrol in msia. (among all the south east asian countries, msia petrol is the cheapest as it also produce crude oil from the underground)

Look at spore high cost of living, senior citizens in their 70s or 80s will still have to work to make ends meet.

On the other hand, an average msian normally are able to retire at the age between 50-55 comfortably, like some of my msian friends who have worked in spore in their younger days are able to retire in their 40s because their expenses are really low compared to the hugh savings they had.

One thing i stronger agree with you is the lack of skill worker. example when a building has been erected, they lack the expertise to maintain it, and after sometime it became very run down.

However they are always pros and cons living in a country of your preference. Important is that the pros outweigh the cons.
