Sarawak 0 - 1 LionsXII : Ishak's penalty seals win

The game started promisingly for the home team with Sarawak taking the Lions by the horns. The visiting Lions were left stunned as they remained pinned at their half, absorbing Sarawak's continuous attacks.

Zamri Morshidi came close to putting the home team in front, but his shot was denied by Lions replacement goalkeeper Hyrulnizam Jumaat. Sarawak continued to dominate play as the retained possession much to the delight of the roaring crowd.

However, the Lions almost came close to slotting a goal when Madhu Mohana's header cannoned off the crossbar. One of the floodlights then went off, and the game turned a little dull after it resumed with both teams failing to create clear chances. Sarawak however had more chances before Hyrulnizam's complain of crowd trouble stopped the game.

The second-half resumed with the Crocs determined to win the game, however, their effort was foiled by poor finishing. In the 71st minute, the Lions got their lucky break when Yosri Derma Raju's hand hit the ball inside the penalty area to concede a soft penalty. Sharil Ishak came forward, and powered home the spot kick, giving the Lions the lead.

Sarawak didn't give up, and started to launch countless attacks. Their effort was however denied by the heroic Hyrulnizam who saved not less than six shots on his goal. The Lions seemed comfortable with the one-goal lead and afforeded taking Shahril off for Khairul Nizam.

As the game grew more tense the referee brandished more cautions, more for the home team who were not too pleased about the official's decisions.

Sarawak, however, failed to hit the target in the dying minutes with their best effort after Ashri's free-kick which looked to be heading in was tipped wide by Hyrulnizam, handing the Lions XII a lucky win for the night.

LionsXII contingent in security scare in Sarawak following fan unrest

LionsXII players r being kept in the Sarawak Stadium 4 precautionary measures while the travelling fans needed heavy security aft unrest by the home fans @ the end of the match betw the Singapore side & Sarawak.

The match ended 1-0 to the Singapore side following a controversial penalty decision by the referee.

Match officials were targetted 4 abuse following the final whistle by the home fans who hv also prevented the LionsXII fan bus fr departing. The fans had crowded out the vehicles & blocked the gates.

Malaysian riot control unit, Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), hv also been deployed 2 dissipate crowd trouble.

Sarawak fan Cyril Dason who was in attendance noted, "The bus as I can see can't move becos the fans r blocking the gate. They r however chanting unpleasant words. Physical abuse? I dont see any, except 4 the [verbal] 1s aimed @ the referee when the game ended."

"Fans r angry with biased referring. Lions r just mere victims of the situation created by the referee."

Fansite Sarawakbloggers.net also described the situation.

"The huge crowd has disabled any1 including the Sarawak players fr leaving the stadium, as buses shuttling officials & players r not able 2 be moved.

"As 4 now, no harm has been reported, but 1 ambulance was seen leaving the state stadium, probably sending an injured Sarawak player which was tacked hardly in the game.

"Dissatisfied fans seen 2 be merely standing around, taking photos of wat is on-going, while hurling bad words 2 the officials. The RELA team is there monitoring the situation while awaiting the FRU 2 arrive. No physical abuse 2 the Lions XII team, or officials hv been reported.

"The LionsXII fans were seated opposite the main grandstand throughout the game, with police ensuring their safety. It is almost impossible 4 them 2 be entangled in tis crowd unless they hv decided 2 move 2 the main grandstand aft the game. They should be @ their hotel anytime now."

Fan unrest had begun during the match as LionsXII goalkeeper Hyrulnizam was pelted with bottles & had a firecracker thrown in his direction. Play was stopped twice 4 crowd unrest & 1s more aft a floodlight failure.

Things became really heated when the visiting side scored fr a controversial penalty decision against the run of play & snatched a victory aft the home side had dominated play.

A series of fouls & bookings against the home side 2wards the end of the match also riled the Sarawak supporters.

Malaysian Super League Preview: LionsXII vs Selangor

Old rivals LionsXII & Selangor face 1 another 4 the 2nd time tis season @ the Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday. The reverse fixture ended 1-1 with the points shared in a competitive match. Fans fr both sides expect more of the same when the teams meet again.

The LionsXII team would hv 2 put aside the distractions of Saturday night, when Sarawak fans became hostile @ the end of the match. Match officials were targetted & the Lions team bus was prevented fr leaving. Coach V. Sundramoorthy would hv 2 make sure his team hv regained their focus aft a torrid weekend. In particular, goalkeeper Hyrulnizam was pelted with bottles & had a firecracker thrown in his direction.

The Lions team should be unchanged having built up a good understanding as a unit & would be looking 2 extend their highly impressive run of 7 victories on a trot. Despite missing players due 2 injuries, the Lions hv steadied their indifferent start 2 their season & lie 3rd in the league standings, 3 points off leaders Kelantan.

Just like the hosts, Selangor began the season shakily but hv put together a good run & lie in 6th place. Aft a less than flattering start 2 the season, the Red Giants hv improved with victories against Kelantan & Kuala Lumpur. Although they hv found goals hard 2 come by, ex-Aston Villa forward Bosko Balaban has helped lead the line admirably & they r tough 2 break down defensively.

Both teams would be looking 2 improve on their run of form & move up the table. The rivalry betw these 2 teams dates back 2 the inception of the Malaya cup in 1921. Both Selangor & Singapore dominated the proceedings, winning the coveted Malaya/Malaysia Cup a total of 56 times betw them.

LionsXII’s unsung heroes shine

The final score @ the Jalan Besar Stadium read 1-1 on Tuesday night.

But despite conceding a late equaliser 2 Selangor, the LionsXII were fortunate 2 earn a point.

The visitors were clearly the better side, boasting the likes of Malaysia internationals Amri Yahyah & Amirul Hadi Zainal, as well as current Lebanese international Ramez Dayoub.

Their goal-scorer of the night, Croatian Bosko Balaban, is a big name 2 begin with.

At 33, the striker has enjoyed a stellar career; having scored goals in 4 different top-tier European leagues.

Many will also remember him fr his 2-year stint with English Premier League side Aston Villa a decade ago, not 4getting his 35 international caps & appearance in the 2002 & 2006 FIFA World Cup.

However, 2 LionsXII players stood out on Tuesday night - goal scorer Sufian Anuar & custodian Hyrulnizam Jumaat.

Sufian was just a bit-part player 4 Home United in the S-League & had only scored twice throughout the entire 2011 season b4 joining the LionsXII.

His goal against Selangor, his 3rd of the season, will certainly give coach V. Sundramoorthy a "healthy selection headache" when the injured Agu Casmir returns fr injury.

It is a similar situation in the LionsXII's goalkeeping department, judging fr the form of custodian Hyrulnizam Jumaat.

Despite playing 2nd fiddle to Shahril Jantan @ SAFFC last year, Hyrulnizam produced another sterling performance when he was called upon 2 stand in 4 Izwan Mahbud, & he didn't disappoint.

Throughout the game, Hyrulnizam produced 1 save aft another, & he was called upon in stoppage time 2 deny Balaban the best chance of the night fr scoring the match-winning goal.

Thwarting the illustrious Croatian may well be 1 of Hyrulnizam memorable moments in his football career.

4 him & Sufian, they were undoubtedly my unsung heroes 4 the LionsXII.

Biggest (ironic) Cheer of the Night: It was reserved 4 Balaban, who was booked by the referee 4 persistent play-acting in the 1st half. Fr then, fans jeered the Croat whenever he got the ball.

(Could-have-been-the) Goal of the Season: Hariss Harun was not all tat far fr netting perhaps the league's most spectacular goal. In the 70th minute, the defender spotted the Selangor custodian off his line fr the middle of the park but his shot was inches off the crossbar.

Malaysia FA Cup Preview: Terengganu vs LionsXII

The Lions return 2 FA Cup action tis weekend & face a tricky 1st-leg away tie @ Terengganu. In their last outing the Lions were pegged back by a late Bosko Balaban freekick 2 draw 1-1 against Selangor.

The Lions will be hoping 2 improve on tat result & will be hoping tat captain Shahril Ishak recovers in time fr his niggling injury 2 lead the team. Against Selangor, Shahril's creativity was missing & the Lions seemed 2 lack ideas in the final 3rd. Sufian Anuar cut a lonely figure & struggled 2 lead the line by himself, highlighting Shahril's importance 2 the team.

Aft a strong run of 6 wins on a trot, the Lions only managed a hard-earned point against Selangor & would be looking 2 return 2 winning ways in Terengganu. Coach Sundramoorthy expects a good away showing & was positive abt his team's chances. "We know our strengths & if we play 2 it, we hv a good chance in the 2nd-leg" he said @ the press conference aft the Selangor match.

Terengganu hv been impressive in the league tis season & lie in 3rd place, 3 points behind leaders Kelantan. Terengganu hv been bouyed by the partnership Francis Doe & Abdul Manaf Mamat hv forged upfront. Liberian Doe has netted an impressive total of 10 goals tis season & the Lions hv 2 watch him closely. The Turtles were humbled by Hong Kong side Kitchee in the AFC Cup in their last outing & will be looking 4 a positive reaction against the Lions.

The teams meet 4 the return leg on Tuesday @ the Jalan Besar Stadium & both teams will be keen 2 gain the advantage in tis tie. The winner of tis quarter-final tie would next face Sime Darby FC or Johor FC in the semi-finals.

Terengganu 1 - 0 LionsXII : Joseph Kalang Tie's strike hands slim 1st leg win for home side

Terengganu will be taking a slim margin of victory to the Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday night after they overcame LionsXII 1-0 at the Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah.

The home side dominated play from the get go but were kept at bay by a resilient visiting side who had come to Terengganu with the clear strategy of defending.

Francis Forkey Doe who struck the winner in Singapore the last time these two teams met, was the first to draw blood. The Liberian forward amazingly struck the foot of the upright in the opening ten minutes when just inches from the goalmouth and only Hyrulnizam Juma'at to beat.

Doe was a constant threat for LionsXII who had a torrid time keeping him and his strike partner, Joseph Kalang Tie shackled. Tie, incidentally, was booked just before the break for half-time after a bad challenge on LionsXII stand-in captain Hariss Harun; the forward having reached his threshold for frustration after not being able to get past a stubborn LionsXII defence.

Crowd trouble, however, surfaced yet again, as bottles and other assortments were tossed on to the pitch. Match officials eventually stopped play close to the half-time whistle as the problems continued.

But the real turning point for the match was on 54 minutes when Hariss, who had been deputising in place of the still missing Shahril Ishak, was given his marching orders after striking out at Doe, following a tussle for the ball.

Terengganu then upped the ante as they took full control of the match.

Just over ten minutes after going a man down, LionsXII found themselves a goal down as well.

Tie's clever individual effort after the tenacious forward had created room for himself whistled into the bottom far corner, much to the delight of the capacity crowd of largely Terengganu fans.
