My life's experience
I suppose mine is a rags to rough-and-tumble story. At the age of 12, I learned to earn my own keep. During the school holidays, I trudged from my home back then in Bukit Merah to Paya Lebar to earn $5 a day in a garment factory. The meagre wage, however, afforded me to buy school books and pay for my school fees.
I continued to work part-time from secondary 2 onwards at McDonalds and elsewhere to put myself through school and help my family financially.
However, juggling between school and paid work wore me out. I decided not to further my studies after my ‘O’ levels. I went on to accumulate more than 10 years of experience in sales and marketing in various industries but mainly in automobile.
I am currently a Sales Director in the company my husband and I set up in 2004, after our first child was born.
In the past 11 years, my husband and I have braved through all manner of the problems of running a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). From just the two of us with three workers, our company now has a staff strength of about 30. Today our company enjoys an annual turnover of $2 million.
As Sales Director, I oversee sales operations, and conduct training from time to time to ensure our sales people are well-trained in developing relationships with clients both in Singapore and the region. In addition, together with the sales team, I develop strategies, tactics, sales plans and profit targets.
