CHUA CHU KANG TC FORCES ELDERLY RESIDENTS TO LEAVE THEIR VOID DECK HANGOUT SPOT

Post date: 18 May 2014 - 12:21pm

The elderly residents living around Block 121 Teck Whye Lane in Chua Chu Kang are upset over the fact that their town council is removing their hang out corner by ordering the chairs gathered there to be cleared.

The 'cosy corner' has been a place for residents to hang out, meet others and make friends for over 6 years.
What started as a place where some residents met and talked near the staircase became the cosy corner it is today when more residents started to gather there and bring their own chairs to sit on while they chatted to other residents.
Now, there are 11 chairs and 2 benches which are left at the cosy corner of Block 121.
However, a notice was put up saying that the chairs would all be removed in a week by the Chua Chu Kang town council citing that the chairs gathered there are a 'fire hazard'.
The residents are confused as they have been using the spot for a very long time and there has never been any problems in the past.
Many of the regulars there are retirees who visit the spot up to three times a day to chit chat with their friends.
Without the cosy corner, the residents will have nowhere to go as the closest hang out spot would be a round table at block 122. However, this spot only has 4 chairs and for the elderly residents who use the comfortable chairs with backrests in the cosy corner, it is not a suitable alternative.
The chairs and benches there have been there for a long time and from time to time people would move them but the regulars would bring them back and keep the place neat and tidy.
The chairs are arranged by the walls so that they are not an obstruction and some have even been chained to the wall so that they do not get moved around.
The town council explained that the chairs are still a fire hazard and need to be removed. On the other hand, they also said that residents can raise their concerns with the town council and other possible alternatives such as the construction of proper seating in the area could be explored.
