Worker dies after falling four storeys from scaffolding which collapsed
A Bangladeshi worker died on Tuesday after he fell four storeys from a scaffolding which collapsed. Another Bangladeshi worker suffered leg injuries in the accident which happened on Tuesday at a Paya Lebar worksite, the latest in a recent spate of worksite accidents.
They were among four workers who were tasked to carry out concreting work for the supporting columns and beams of a skylight on a building under construction, said the Ministry of Manpower. Preliminary findings showed that they were working on the structure supporting the concreting work, located at the fourth storey of the building, when the structure collapsed. Two of the workers managed to escape in time and were unharmed.
The ministry, which has issued a stop-work order, is investigating the accident. It also urged all formwork contractors and occupiers to carry out proper risk assessments and ensure that formwork is erected in accordance with a professional engineer's design where required. Failure to do so is an offence under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, and carries a fine of up to $500,000. The ministry said last Saturday that it will step up inspections of worksites islandwide over a two-week period, following a spate of serious accidents involving formwork structures which collapsed.
There have been several deaths resulting from worksite accidents in recent weeks. Last Thursday, a Chinese worker fell 19 storeys to his death after being struck by a prefabricated structure hanging from a crane at a Sengkang construction site. A day earlier, two Bangladeshi workers fell to their death at a construction site at Fusionopolis Way, near Ayer Rajah Avenue.
