RSAF to acquire costly Aster-30 SAM system

September 17th, 2013 | Author: Editorial

Minister Ng Eng Hen

Speaking in Parliament yesterday (16 Sep), Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said
that the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will soon acquire a new
surface-to-air missile system called the Aster-30.

He said that the Aster-30 is many times more potent than the I-hawk air
defence system RSAF is currently using.

“The Aster will allow us to engage multiple threats simultaneously and from a
longer distance,” Dr Ng said.

According to Wikipedia [Link], Aster is
manufactured by Eurosam. It is designed to intercept and destroy a wide range of
air threats including missiles.

Aster is mainly used by France, Italy and the UK currently. It has a range of
up to 120 km. The weight of an Aster 30 missile is 450 kg. Length is about 5
metres with a diameter of 180mm. Aster-30 is capable of reaching a speed of Mach
4.5 and an altitude of 30 km.

The system uses a network of sophisticated radars and sensors enabling it to
be highly effective against all types of air threats.

According to the Italian Army which uses the Aster-30 system, it is capable
of stopping short- to medium-range ballistic missiles [Link],
besides stopping aircraft.

As for its cost, according to this website [Link],
a SAM battery with radar, command system, 6 launchers and 96 Aster-30 missiles
can set a nation back about US$400-450 million, with each Aster-30 missile
costing about US$2.5 million.

Dr Ng said that the security and sovereignty of our country must never be
compromised.

However, it is logical to assume that any increase in spending on defence
capability will likely trigger a similar increase in spending in our
adversaries.

According to a 2012 report from the Stockholm International Peace Research
Institute (SIPRI), Singapore is now the 5th-largest arms importer in the world,
bested only by some obvious behemoths – China, India and Pakistan – plus South
Korea. Singapore accounts for 4% of the world’s total spending on arms imports.
Its defence spending per head beats every country bar America, Israel and
Kuwait. Last year $9.7 billion, or 24% of the national budget, went to defence
[Link].
