Former cab driver enters into sham marriage out of
desperation

September 12th, 2013 | Author: Editorial

A former cab driver, Ang Teck Khee, was sentenced to 6
months’ jail by the district court today (12 Sep) for entering into a sham
marriage with a foreigner.

Ang admitted in court that he had received a sum of $7,900 from a 25-year-old
Vietnamese woman, Doan Thi Thu, for entering into a marriage of convenience.

He had also been charged for making false statements to ICA so as to obtain
visit passes for her.

Doan was dealt with by the court in a separate hearing earlier. She was also
jailed for 6 months.

Sometime in April this year, Doan approached Ang for help. She wanted to
remain in Singapore after her student pass had expired.

Out of desperation, Ang told Doan that she could pay him to enter into a
marriage of convenience so that he could help sponsor her continual stay in
Singapore. Doan agreed.

Ang had a number of serious medical conditions and his savings were running
out. He needed money desperately to for his medical treatments.

After the “marraige” solemnisation, Doan paid Ang $7,900. She did not live
with him at his home in Marine Terrace.

In mitigation, Ang’s lawyer told the court that his client had multiple
serious medical conditions, including End-Stage Renal Failure (ESRD).
ESRD is
when the kidneys stop working well enough for the person to live without
dialysis or a transplant. This kind of kidney failure is permanent and cannot be
fixed. Most cases of ESRD are caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. The
person will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to live [Link].

Ang’s lawyer also told the court that Ang had incurred hefty medical bills,
which were wiping out his savings.

“It’s not a case where he is not working and looking for easy money,” the
lawyer said, adding that Ang had agreed to enter into the sham marriage out of
desperation.

Ang could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined up to $10,000.

It’s not known if Ang has bought any MediShield insurance.
