Re: Pissed off by gf mum...
My humble personal view. But we make our heaven whereever we are. Even if we are in a hell, we can still be happy. If we are happy on the inside, then no matter what others say or do, it does not matter. For me, I rely on myself, my family and my loved ones. I do not bother about what or who can give me what, so I am happy. Even if the country collapses, my family will still be there for me and I for my family.

Re: Pissed off by gf mum...
Well boss, I hear you. But seriously, been all over the world, lived in Aus, Japan, Thailand and been on long job stints in a lot of other places. Cashing out and staying in a few of the places were choices. In fact, with a Japanese wife and kid, the logical thing will be to get out and go there. But seriously, to some, it is a choice to stay, while some have no choice but to stay. Just like the movie 2012, some were not even given a chance to even try to leave or save themselves. But some refuse to go because of a pride. I have nothing against those who go, nor any grudges against those who stay lah. Just that I came back because I tried it and it was not my thing.

Re: Pissed off by gf mum...
It is fun to see sam hijacking this thread to bitch about the singapore government. He left the country and he is happy so thats good for him, a lot of us are happy here, making a good living for ourselves. Who gives a shit what he thinks about Singapore. If I want to bitch about politics I would go somewhere else.

Re: Pissed off by gf mum...
Back to TS,
From your writing style, you certainly do not come across as a Secondary school dropout. Very articulate and precise. Admittedly, Singapore it is a little harder to succeed without paper qualifications but many have done so. You could of course go to another country but hey, if you start giving up now, what makes you think a change of locale would help. Plus it seems you have ties here so... Don't worry about others. I had my doubters before too. Well, I'm doing pretty well right now and didn't really care that much about people who aren't my friends. Your success is the best way to make others eat their words. Cheers! |

Re: Pissed off by gf mum...
Thanks bro chrysler, I take it as a compliment then.
I definitely won't let her parents affect me. Got to be a steadfast individual to be able to achieve results which I want for myself though the beginning is always gonna be tough. I don't know much but this issue about migration is really subjective. Everyone seems to be right in their own way. For me I guess the kinship here would be something that's not gonna be easy to let go. |

IMHO, your future in-laws were just being practical, given your current financial condition (No offend intended). Of course, many at times, old folks can be pretty direct because of their “eat salt more than we eat rice” mentality . Don’t have to take it at heart, and should keep yourselves away from any dispute to avoid any tension. Instead concentrate to do the things which are beneficial for you and your soon-to-be-family’s future and should not think whether your future in-laws are looking down at you or whatever negative thoughts they may have. However, do not make the distance from them to that extent to which if you are in need, you may feel ashamed to seek favour from them. In this changing world, it is very difficult to say that in which condition you may be in need to take help from them. Therefore, do not break any relationship permanently even when you are doing well. Think about your future, take lessons from the past, but live your life for the present and adopt a practical approach of life because this is the demand of today's world. Thus, in 2 years later, it would be more practical (till you are really stable) to be: 1) to pay for my house, 4) drive a car, 2) be able to save some money, 3) providing for my gf now (wife by then) and children (if any). Cheers and work hard |

It doesn't matter who runs Singapore. Nobody can change the inevitable. It therefore pains me to see naive Singaporeans sinking their hard earned salaries into homes and cars which will end up worthless. Rather than blow $500,000 for a bit of space in the sky on a 99 year lease, surely the money would be better spent buying a real asset which future generations can inherit.
