Mum: If a person is poor, then he shouldn't apply such a big house, just make do with a 3room flat.

(I've applied for a 4room flat together with my gf, not without the support of my family of course. I'm fortunate to have a family which can afford a comfortable lifestyle thus offering me financial assistance in times of need. Bros would be wondering why I dont seek help from home. Reason is I dont go home and ask for help unless it's a really big issue. Got to be independent right?)

It was obvious they were trying to be sarcastic. I was pissed off and angry but since I owe them the rent, there was nothing I could do than keep my mouth shut! I'm not earning big money and as such, there's nothing I can do to impress her parents. However, I will persevere and work diligently. I believe that even though I maybe not be able to earn big amounts of money, in 2 years time, I will be earning a decent amount of money which allows me to pay for my house, drive a car and be able to save some money after providing for my gf now (wife by then) and children if any.

From your writing style, you certainly do not come across as a Secondary school dropout. Very articulate and precise. Admittedly, Singapore it is a little harder to succeed without paper qualifications but many have done so.

You could of course go to another country but hey, if you start giving up now, what makes you think a change of locale would help. Plus it seems you have ties here so...

Don't worry about others. I had my doubters before too. Well, I'm doing pretty well right now and didn't really care that much about people who aren't my friends. Your success is the best way to make others eat their words.

I definitely won't let her parents affect me. Got to be a steadfast individual to be able to achieve results which I want for myself though the beginning is always gonna be tough.

I don't know much but this issue about migration is really subjective. Everyone seems to be right in their own way. For me I guess the kinship here would be something that's not gonna be easy to let go.

IMHO, your future in-laws were just being practical, given your current financial condition (No offend intended). Of course, many at times, old folks can be pretty direct because of their “eat salt more than we eat rice” mentality . Don’t have to take it at heart, and should keep yourselves away from any dispute to avoid any tension.

Instead concentrate to do the things which are beneficial for you and your soon-to-be-family’s future and should not think whether your future in-laws are looking down at you or whatever negative thoughts they may have. However, do not make the distance from them to that extent to which if you are in need, you may feel ashamed to seek favour from them. In this changing world, it is very difficult to say that in which condition you may be in need to take help from them. Therefore, do not break any relationship permanently even when you are doing well.

Think about your future, take lessons from the past, but live your life for the present and adopt a practical approach of life because this is the demand of today's world. Thus, in 2 years later, it would be more practical (till you are really stable) to be: 1) to pay for my house, 4) drive a car, 2) be able to save some money, 3) providing for my gf now (wife by then) and children (if any).
