According to Dam, her daughter couldn’t speak Korean, so when she was hurt by her husband, she could only make signs to him. The husband didn’t understand and thought that she opposed him.

Phung called home again in mid-July and revealed that her husband had threatened to sell her to recover their betrothal money. On July 25, Dam received a call announcing that her daughter had run away and that she must return $600 to the Korean husband.

In early July, just a week after going to Korea, Vietnamese bride Thach Thi Hoang Ngoc was stabbed to death by her mentally ill husband. This was the fourth Vietnamese bride killed by her Korean husband in the last three years.

“I didn’t have any information about my daughter. I am so worried! I am fearful that she may be murdered by her husband’s family like some Vietnamese brides recently!” Dam admitted through her tears.

The mother borrowed money to go to the South Korean Consulate General in HCM City to report her daughter’s was missing in Korea.

Several days later, her daughter called home, saying that she had been maltreated and threatened with death by her husband’s family. She was so fearful that she ran away even though her personal papers were being held by her husband. Luckily, she met another Vietnamese person, who brought her to a centre for immigrant women.

The Korean Consulate General in HCM City informed Dam that her daughter is now in good condition at the centre.

“I was very happy that my daughter is safe, but I hope that competent bodies will help bring my daughter back home. I’m afraid that she will be arrested by her husband family,” the mother revealed.
