Re: Diverting issues...
Reality TV with a twist: Thai PM cooks, nurses babies (AFP) 20 January 2006 BANGKOK - Thailand’s latest reality show need not rely on fading celebrities doing stunts, nor sex between anonymous housemates - this show features the country’s prime minister cooking and riding a tractor. “Backstage show: the prime minister” is what Thaksin Shinawatra calls “distance learning” for government officials in how to tackle poverty in the country’s northeastern provinces with the premier leading by example. A billionaire whose family controls a telecommunications empire, Thaksin portrays himself in the five-day show as just an ordinary Thai in Isaan, the poorest region of Thailand. He rides a tractor to a meeting with farmers, cooks them food, serves breakfast to Buddhist monks, and suggests ways the locals could earn more money. Critics of the 24-hour cable TV show, filmed with 40 cameras and a crew of 100, argue it is simply a stunt by one of the country’s richest men to boost his sagging popularity after five years in office. ”Thaksin Fantasia” Reality shows like “Big Brother” and a Thai talent competition called “Academy Fantasia” have become enormously popular here, mainly among the urban middle class that can afford cable or satellite television. That has led the local press to dub the premier’s programme ”Thaksin Fantasia”. The prime minister ignores the barbs of the media and argues that his is a more noble cause: an attempt to educate officials in how they can improve the livelihoods of millions of Thais. “I’m not concerned about criticism,” he said. “I totally focus on the (programme’s) effectiveness. I don’t target farmers as the audience, but the government authorities.” Thaksin advised provincial governors to watch his conversations with farmers as “homework” for lessons in fighting poverty in their own regions. This maddens critics who argue that Thaksin, facing anti-government protests in cities like Bangkok and northern Chiang Mai, has simply “gone native” to shore up his support among rural voters who are his political base. A weekly anti-Thaksin rally in Bangkok last weekend turned into a march on Government House, where protesters briefly entered the grounds. In Chiang Mai anti-free trade protesters this month pushed their grievances against Thaksin’s economic policies. “The television show can’t help Thaksin to get away from his problems of corruption and also the failure of solving the problems in the southern provinces” of Thailand, said Chaiyan Chaiyaporn, a political science professor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. More than 1,000 people have died in two years of unrest in Thailand’s Muslim-majority south - crimes blamed on a complex mix of Islamic separatists, organised criminals and local corruption. That violence, plus frequent allegations of government corruption, have caused Thaksin to lose much of the support he enjoyed at the February 2005 elections when he commanded a 77 percent majority that gave him an unprecedented second term in office. “We’re looking forward to seeing his tactics for next week,” Chaiyan said. “It will not be a television show, it’ll be something new to distract people from the problems that are arising in Bangkok and in the major provinces.” Not all are so skeptical of Thaksin’s motivations. Sirirat Choonhakla, a political analyst at Mahidol University, said she regularly watched the show and believed it could be of help to local officials. “In Thailand, we have quite a problem of administration, we don’t cooperate very well with each other,” she told AFP confident that by visiting the provinces, Thaksin was trying to show how his chief executive-style of government could encourage his officials to do more good. |
