IMHO, the reason is simple.

The married life is boring & routine. The wifey's focus more often than not has shifted to the child or children, if there is more than 1.

The sex, if at all existent, has also become stale & boring.The romance that used to be there in courtship is missing.

The hubby goes around looking for romance & sexual excitement & he finds them or so he believe in the new-found love.

It is always a great feeling when you fall in love or believe that you are in love.

When you have such a great feeling, you heck care about the consequences.
