Hassle-free entry for travellers from S’pore

Report from The New Straits Times dated Sunday 10 June 2007:-

Hassle-free entry for travellers from S’pore

KOTA TINGGI : Travellers entering Malaysia through Singapore will no longer have to go through two separate Immigration and Customs checks.

All they have to do after getting their travel documents stamped by Immigration officers, is to head straight out to the green lane and not have to contend with hawk-eyed Customs officers scanning their luggage.

But if these travellers think they can get away with smuggling things into Malaysia, they had better think again.

Hidden in the lanes will be state-of-the-art devices that can pick them out from the crowd.

Smugglers will be detected through new security measures that will be a marriage of sophisticated scanners and officers trained in spotting tell-tale signs of suspicious behaviour.

The Rover System, as it is called, would be used at the new Bukit Chagar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex, said Customs director-general Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Abdul Hamid.

Besides easing traffic flow, the new system is expected to reduce the manpower requirements of the department by at least 50 per cent, he said.

The system, which emphasises the use of human intelligence and technology surveillance equipment, has been in use in Europe and the United States for years.

"The Bukit Chagar CIQ is the first among Asean member countries to use the Rover System," Rahman told reporters after visiting the construction site of a new Customs office in Tanjung Surat.

He said that with the new system in place, the department would only have to station 200 officers at the CIQ.

Currently, there are about 300 Customs officers working at the Causeway.

Earlier, Rahman accompanied World Customs Organisation deputy secretary-general Kunio Mikuriya on a tour of the Bukit Chagar CIQ building, which is scheduled to be opened in October 2007.

Mikuriya said he was impressed with the CIQ and hoped the Rover System would reduce clearance time while at the same time ensure the security of the checkpoints.

Another woman gang-raped in JB

Report from The STAR dated Thursday 14 June 2007 :-

Another woman gang-raped in JB

JOHOR BARU : A group of men took a couple on a terror ride before raping the woman, the second such case in as many days here.

A 55-year-old contractor and his 35-year-old female friend had stopped at a petrol station along the Pasir Gudang highway at 10.30pm last week.

As he was filling up, three men armed with parang overpowered him and forced both victims into the car.

The assailants took the victims on a one-hour terror ride before stopping at a secluded area along the highway.

As in the case on Monday, the contractor was slashed in the leg when he tried to escape.

With the injured victim watching helplessly, the men took turns to rape the woman before fleeing in another car driven by an accomplice.
The victims lodged a police report after the incident.

On Monday, a 19-year-old girl was raped by three men as her boyfriend watched helplessly in Taman Tampoi Indah.

Their car was rammed into by another car. Three men in the car then abducted the couple. The boyfriend was also slashed in the leg when he tried to escape.

In another incident, a doctor, in her 50s, fell and injured her head after two thieves on a motorcycle snatched her handbag while she was walking to her car in Taman Melody yesterday.

Passers-by who saw the incident caught one of the suspects. He was handed over to the police.

Southern Gateway sees 4.5pc rise in tourist traffic

Report from The New Straits Times dated Tuesday 19 June 2007 :-

Southern Gateway sees 4.5pc rise in tourist traffic

JOHOR BARU : Malaysia’s Southern Gateway saw a 4.5 per cent rise in tourist traffic in the first quarter, despite Johor’s reputation for being crime-ridden.

Some 6.9 million tourists arrived through the Causeway, the Second Link and the Senai airport here between January and March, said the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta).

The same period last year saw about 6.6 million arrivals, said Matta president Ngiam Foon.

"Today’s tourists understand that there can be no city with a zero crime rate. But it’s important for local authorities to assure tourists of a strong police presence and the general feeling of safety."

Matta was planning to meet local authorities of the country’s main tourist destinations to see how it could help to make tourists feel safer, he added.

The Johor chapter is hoping to join the state government and police on a visit to Singapore to brief tour agents there on plans to reduce crime here, said its chairman Kathryn H.C. Lee.

Ngiam and Lee were speaking after presenting aid to four Matta members affected by the widespread floods in Johor last year.

‘Untouchable’ crime kingpin arrested in Johor Baru

Report from The STAR dated Sunday 5 August 2007 :-

‘Untouchable’ crime kingpin arrested in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU : A powerful crime lord, involved in organised underworld activities including vice and gaming, was detained here several days ago.

The 55-year-old suspect, previously regarded as an “untouchable,” was arrested by a special team of officers from Bukit Aman under the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

The suspect, who is also widely mentioned in a blog, has since been taken to an undisclosed location in the country to assist in investigations.

It is learnt that the crime lord, described as the head of one of the most powerful syndicates in the country, was arrested under a directive from the Internal Security Ministry.

He was picked up by the team from the commercial crime unit at an undisclosed location here.

Federal commercial crimes director Comm Datuk Ramli Yusuf confirmed the arrest of an underworld figure for money laundering under the Restricted Residence Act.

He declined to elaborate further.

It is learnt that the suspect is being detained under a 60-day detention order, which can be extended up to two to three years through a directive from the Internal Security Minister.

It is learnt that several police reports have also been lodged by family members alleging the arrest was unlawful.

This is the second major arrest in the state involving crime syndicates.

Last month seven suspected Malaysian gang leaders with links to the Singapore underworld, allegedly involved in vice and gaming activities here and across the Causeway, were arrested.

All of them were arrested with the assistance of the Singapore police.
However, one of the seven has since been released.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan recently said that police had identified seven gang leaders who had been terrorising the state with the help of influential people.

He said police were gathering intelligence to either take action against these leaders under preventive laws or to charge them in court.

‘Sa+++ Market’ in JB makes them feel close to home

Report from The New Straits Times dated Monday 6 August 2007 :-

‘Sa+++ Market’ in JB makes them feel close to home

JOHOR BARU : Home is not too far away for some 45,000 people from Sarawak staying here.

A weekend market which resembles the popular Sa+++ Market in Kuching has been set up in Taman Mega Ria. It sells jungle produce, handicrafts and food that remind a native of the Land of Hornbills of home.

Among others, one can find pucuk paku (jungle ferns), bamboo shoots, sago worms, ikan terubok and salai, pua kumbu (traditional Dayak fabric), kolok mee, as well as Sarawak handicrafts at the market in Jalan Bayan 3/1.

Taman Megah Ria has been known as Kampung Sarawak for over a decade due to its high concentration of those from the state.

The market, set up several weeks ago, has become a magnet, drawing customers between 6am and 10am every Sunday and public holiday.

Set up by the Borneo Hawkers, Traders, Small and Medium Industries Association (Persada Borneo), there are 60 hawkers.

John Chendang, a small-time transport operator here, said he sold pucuk paku, bamboo shoots and sweet potatoes collected from jungles.

"These are items popular among those from Sarawak. My produce is limited as it is not easy to find," said Chendang, from Sri Aman.

Ju Balang’s kolok mee is a crowd-puller. Balang, from Sarikei, is a golf course manager here.

"Kolok mee is a popular dish in Sarawak and I like it a lot. Setting up this stall helps to satisfy my cravings."

Kolok mee is like wanton mee except that it comes without meat dumplings.

The market is usually packed with those from Sabah and Sarawak.

Persada Borneo adviser Mathiew Usun said 25,000 from Sarawk resided in Taman Megah Ria and Kota Masai here, while another 20,000 stayed in the flats in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Skudai. They work in Singapore or in Johor Baru.

Factory worker Genis Meriteh, from Sibu, said she frequented the market to buy jungle produce, especially pucuk paku, and ikan terubok.

"These are my favourite food. It is great to find a market here, probably the first of its kind in Johor, selling things similar to markets in Sarawak."

Abet Achoh, a project manager with a petrochemical company, said he would not miss the kolok mee and was sure to bring home several sago worms.

"I also buy bamboo to cook. Whenever I am at the market, I feel like I am in my hometown," said Abet, from Kuching.

Crime rate in Johor decreases

Report from The STAR dated Tuesday 7 August 2007 :-

Crime rate in Johor decreases

JOHOR BARU : There has been a decrease in the number of crimes in Johor state during the the first six months of this year (2007) compared to January-June of last year (2006).

Acting state police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said that a total of 15,646 cases were reported this year.

This was a decrease of 1,276 cases or 7.54% compared to the 16,922 cases from January until June last year, he said.

"We are working harder to bring it down even further," he said.

He was speaking after launching the state-level Community Policing and appointing 11 officers from each district who would be the coordinators here on Tuesday.

SAC I Mohd Mokhtar said the 'police-solving rate' has also increased from 40.83% last year to 43.34% this year.

"The crime rate is down due to continuous crime prevention operations and raids against criminal elements in the state.

"We are also thankful to the cooperation from the public to combat crime," he said.

The best weapon to combat crime was strong cooperation between the public and police, he added.

SAC I Mohd Mokhtar said police were also cleaning up red-light districts in the city such as Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Jalan Dobi.

"In a recent raid, we nabbed 13 women including foreigners at various cheap hotels in Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

"They are suspected of prostitution and we will intensify our efforts to clean up such places," he said.

He added that police were also working with local authorities such as the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) for this.
