SM bars in Tokyo (Part I, there's a character limit on my posts):

Amarcord (Shinjuku) - Probably the most popular bar with foreigners. This is the place where there is most likely to be an English speaking staff member working on any particular night. The system is also different to most other SM bars in that you pay by the drink for yourself and for any staff you want to chat / play with (and not a set per hour charge where you get all you can drink and all you can play with no requirement to buy drinks for the staff).

This place usually stays open later than other SM bars, and attracts a very diverse crowd from all over the Tokyo SM scene (especially after midnight ~ 1AM when the other places close). A good place to meet people and hear about the Tokyo SM scene.

For me at least though, I find that the diverse crowd means a lower proportion of hardcore SM players (and those that are serious tend to be more inhibited here than in other venues, with the play tending towards the tame end of the scale). Plus I personally never found any Dommes there that I really clicked with.


Roppongi Jail - The interior of this place is definitely my favourite out of all of the SM bars I've been to in Japan. It has Mistresses and submissive female staff that do shows multiple times a night, and thus tends to attract a lot of voyeurs as well as serious players. While this means that it is very easy to get play with multiple Dommes (they usually just sit around idle between shows and get bored, since the proportion of subs among the customers is lower), I personally feel slightly inhibited playing in front of random drunks that wander in off the street as opposed to people that play themselves. I get the feeling that the other subs that come here feel the same too, and I haven't seen much hardcore play go on here.

Also I've never had a problem with this personally, but multiple Japanese friends in the SM scene have told me that the staff here have asked them if they visit other SM bars, and been rude to them if they answer yes.


Baroque (also in Roppongi) - Haven't been here much, but some of the Dommes here are hot and I could easily see myself adding them to my pool of play partners (if I wasn't overloaded with them already). However all the play that I've seen in the club has been pretty mild.

Tokyo SM Bars Part II:

Eureka (Ikebukuro) - A club that specialises in hardcore Femdom (no submissive girls on the staff here, though some lesbian submissives come as customers). They go so far as to have a rule that customers must sit on the floor while the chairs are reserved for the staff (enforced on some nights a lot more than others). The vibe here is more like an underground house party than a commercial club, and play is the most full on out of any SM bar I've been to in Japan. Plus this place tends to attract a lot of Dommes with really hot styles.

When you come for the first time you will have to become a member and fill out some paperwork. You can only become a member if you agree to 20 something conditions, which all seem to be variations of "I won't get drunk" and "I won't tell the staff what to do" each rephrased a dozen different ways.

They also have absolutely no-one on the staff that can put two words of English together, so Japanese is a total must. Also they don't really encourage people to go there just to drink and not play. Expect to come under intense pressure to play, and given the cold shoulder if you don't do something (especially if you're a gaijin since you'll stand out more, and absolutely if it's your first time there).


Pink Crystal (Shinjuku) - Another more underground, hardcore bar (though not as much as Eureka). Could be wrong but I don't think anyone here speaks English.


Arcadia (Shinjuku) - Less hardcore than Pink Crystal or Eureka but more so than Amarcord or Roppongi Jail. Some staff here speak English but not that high a level.

Thanks for your great insight into the SM Bar scene. I have been to Amamcord and Sugar Heel but not any others.

I personally have not much interest to explore the SM-Bar concept for two main reasons.
One is that I am very private and will only do my play in private thus engaging only in love hotel sessions.

Second is that I do not find value in the SM-Bar concept. Entrance and drink prices are very high in some of the places (Amacord being an exception).
If I am going to drop a lot of cash - I would rather do it for a session where I can get what I want which is interactive play with the Mistress I choose.

Also if I want to watch SM Play - I can just go on the internet.

But this is just for me, others here may really enjoy the SM Bar experience.

I do like Amacord since it is a very welcoming bar and you get the chance to talk at length with the Mistresses that go there. Do to time constraints of hotel sessions, you really do not get this chance to converse at length.

I am somewhat interested in checking out Eureka(especially since Mistress Ruiko is working there now) but do not think I will have the guts to go there.

No worries. When I have time I'll write about my experiences with Dommes from the love hotel SM session scene ("Mistress Clubs" or "SM Clubs" as they're known in Japan).

I see where you're coming from about preferring Mistress Clubs, especially if you don't want to play in public (which I am more than happy to do). I personally have zero interest in watching actual "shows", though I like watching other customers play in SM bars.

However even if I wanted to do a Mistress Club session, I would much rather do it with someone I've already got to know rather than choose a stranger off the net just by reading a profile and maybe seeing some pics. Especially since the one time I did do this, I had an extremely negative experience (and it was with a very big name Mistress from the most popular club with foreigners in Japan). But I can post more on this (and other more positive experiences) later.

I your description of Eureka is very good. However Pink Crystal is a bit of a contradiction. Yes sometimes hardcore, the tone of Japanese is defiantly reflecting this. But one of the mistresses there is the absolutely gorgeous and Anime look alike Kaede Hibiki-san of previous La Siora fame.



And while she is sooooooooo pretty gorgeous intoxicating she is actually quite tough. However that is only an issue if you have the fortune to visit when nobody else is around. PC doubles as a Kareoki bar and the Friday and Saturday crowds are often filled to the brink and they have to turn away business.

Now Hibiki-san actually speaks some English, but only simple sentences so be carefully what you try to tell her you enjoy. She is a much more accomplished mistress then her doll like impression lets on.

Also be aware that sitting at a table is more expensive 7,000円/60m compared with sitting at the bar 5,000円/90m. And you get encouraged to buy drinks for the girl your talking to. Enjoy

It seems you have been to the extreams. I think Sugerheal at 13,000円 per hour is probably the most expensive SM bar in Tokyo, closely followed by Bar Mistress 10,000円 per hour.

While the public play aspects not being for everybody, for me it's such a unique setup that probably would not work anywhere else. I've seen many female guests both dominant and submissive go to these bars. But the show bars, which have the highest rates is mostly stacked with foreigners.

If you want value for money, time-wise consider Bar Jack Rose. At 10,000円 flat fee you can hang around for 7 hours from 6pm until 1am and this place have 2 hight quality bartenders and some of the most amazing whiskies on earth. Yes drinks and bar food is all the extra costs you have to worry about.

Downside it's the only SM bar in shimbashi so it gets very busy most nights.

Amarcord as you and bro Born both have pointed out is very cool and all of the staff is very friendly. But since the staff consists of both Mistresses and subs you can end up with a but of an miss match some times.

Since they operate under a different type of license, the staff can't touch clients and vise versa, the also have the best opening hours. The fact that they are located in Shinjuku's 2-chome makes it almost seemlessly blend in with the areas rich nightlife. It's sad that the upstairs club La Dungeon didn't do as well and got closed down last year.

Another plus is that it's open even on Sundays.

Yeah I am just not into the SM Bar concept at all. Paying anywhere from 5000-10000 just to sit at a table, watch a "SM" show , and buy expensive drinks is just not my idea of value.

I would much rather put that kind of money towards an hour of guaranteed private play with Mistress Ruiko.

yeah my one experience at Sugar Heel was very disappointing in that the money I spent while there was just not worth it.

One much cheaper option for public play is attending one of the fetish parties like tokyoperve or Torture Garden. I have not gone to one in many years but the Tokyoperve used to be really good with many Toyko area Mistresses attending.

Too bad about your negative experience.
I try new Mistresses often and most of the time it turns well. But there are the times it does not. Just look here for my past experience with Mistress Yui(now retired) from Club Absolute. I was so mesmerized by her videos and photos and then so let down by her performance in the flesh. But you will never know until you try at least once.

True what you say about Pink Crystal being less hardcore on weekends. But I'd say that applies (unfortunately) to everywhere in the Tokyo SM bar scene, even Eureka.

Whenever I've gone to Pink Crystal on weeknights I've always ended up doing at least some kind of some play (including with Hibiki among others). She's a really kind and friendly person, but like you said can go hard if you're up for it and you're alone (or even if the bar isn't too crowded). I have absolutely no idea how much English she speaks, because I just use Japanese to her, and whenever I've gone to Pink Crystal I've been the only gaijin there.
