SINGAPORE: A former delivery driver was jailed for 10 months on Thursday (Nov 26) for misappropriating goods worth more than S$200,000 over the course of 10 months, from September 2014 till July this year.

Mohaya Arwee, 51, together with three co-accused, stole thousands of cartons of foodstuff, including 631 cartons of ikan bilis and 1,291 cartons of chicken-flavoured seasoning, the court heard. Mohaya was a delivery driver for Tan Brothers Logistics.

Their offences came to light when the Chief Operations Officer made a police report, after noticing that a large quantity of food products from the warehouse could not be accounted for, and that the company’s record of its stocks did not tally with its sales.

Mohaya’s co-accused, Muhammad Abdul Hafiz Abd Matin, 31, and Mohammed Fazli Mohammed Shafiee, 34, were employees of Lim Siang Huat Pte Ltd, while Ahmad Samat, 57, was formerly a delivery attendant at Tan Brothers Logistics. Tan Brothers Logistics was contracted by Lim Siang Huat Pte Ltd to provide delivery services.

The court heard that sometime in 2014, Mohaya, Fazli and Hafiz came up with a plan to dishonestly take food products stored at a warehouse and sell them for profit. Ahmad was informed of the plan, and he agreed to take part in it.

Thereafter, the quartet would communicate and agree beforehand on the food products to take. They would meet at the warehouse early in the day to avoid being spotted by other workers.

In the warehouse, Fazli would load a trolley with cartons of food products, while Hafiz acted as his lookout. Mohaya and Ahmad would load the stolen products on a lorry and transport them to shops in Joo Chiat area. They sold the stolen food products and they would split the profit among themselves, the court heard.

Besides ikan bilis and chicken seasoning, the quartet also stole 597 cartons of chicken powder, 282 cartons of Thousand Island dressing, 781 cartons of mayonnaise, and 454 cartons of tom yam paste. The total value of these products was S$212,120.57.

Only S$9,351.62 worth of the items have been recovered so far.

The cases of the three co-accused are still before the courts.
